Former Super Eagles captain and coach Christian Chukwu acknowledges that Zambia will be a threat to Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup but reckons that Gernot Rohr’s team need that added pressure, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Zambia defeated Algeria 1-0 away to reach seven points, three adrift of the Eagles who need an outright win to guarantee a place at the World Cup.
“Zambia are a threat to Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia but I have confidence in the coach. He’s capable,” Chukwu told Completesportsnigeria.com from his Enugu base.
“I believe the Eagles will overcome the Zambians, all they need do is take them seriously and have full concentration.
“I hope this World Cup ticket will be achieved on October 7 and not November.”
Chukwu would not single out a particular Super Eagles player for praise, insisting that the win at home in Uyo and draw away in Yaounde are collective triumphs for the team.
“No, I will not say this player or that player impressed most or performed least,” the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner added.
“A team wins together and loses together. There must have been contributions from every player or official either on the field or in the dressing room.”

Nigeria’s opponents the in October 7 FIFA World Cup qualifier, Chipolopolo of Zambia, will spend a week in Ghana to acclimatise ahead of the crunch tie billed for Uyo, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.

The masteronline.com confirmed earlier reports that the team is expected to head to Spain for two weeks intensive camping considering the pedigree of Zambia’s opponents in the October 7 cracker.

FAZ president, Andrew Kamanga, revealed that the CHAN and COSAFA team will head to Spain for camping after which the foreign-based players are expected to link up with the team in Ghana for their final tune-up before travelling down to Nigeria.

“So we will send them to Europe for two weeks. The players who have been playing COSAFA and CHAN will go first and then their colleagues will join them, then we will move into Ghana for a week then go into Nigeria and fight to win because we believe we have a chance to go to the World Cup,” Kamanga said.

The Super Eagles lead Group B with 10 points and would need an outright win to confirm their third straight World Cup qualification, while Zambia need a win in Uyo to tie with Nigeria on ten points to take the group down to the wire.

NPFL Goal King Okpotu: League Mission Completed, WAFU Cup Next

Lobi Stars of Makurdi striker Anthony Okpotu who emerged highest goalscorer in the Nigerian Premier Football League is already setting his sights on bigger targets with the senior national team in the WAFU Cup competition which kicked off Saturday in Ghana, completesportsnigeria.com has exclusively gathered.

Okpotu, scorer of 19 goals, beat MFM’s Stephen Odey to the award but claimed he never set his sights on winning the title in the first place.

“I’ve been playing in the League for a while and each season, I always try to help my team to win games by scoring as many goals as possible. This season was not different. I was just doing my thing. Because I didn’t put m mind to it, I was not under any serious pressure to win. I’m grateful to my teammates and the coaches because without all of them this would not have been possible,” he told completesportsnigeria.com.

The former Al-Itihad of Libya forward also zeroed in on the goal which he felt was the most beautiful of all the 19 he scored in the season which included two hattricks against MFM and El-Kanemi.

He said: “I will pick the second goal in our 3-0 win over MFM in Makurdi. It was a free-kick and I think it was beautiful to watch. I actually wanted to cross the ball but at the last minute I noticed that the goalkeeper was not well-positioned so I changed my mind and decided to aim directly for goal. It went over the wall and into the net. It was a good goal.”

The 23-year old, already in the national team camp with the Super Eagles who are preparing to participate at the WAFU Cup in Ghana, said he’s now focused on helping Nigeria to do well at the competition.

“I want to join my teammates to help Nigeria win the WAFU Cup. As usual, I’m not setting any goals target for myself. If I get picked to play, I will give it my best and ensure we do well. If I sit on the bench, I will support whoever is playing. We are a team and we win together.”

Nigeria are billed to face Sierra Leone in their first game on Monday before the winner goes on to qualify for a four-team round -robin.

Aaron Samuel may make his debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League this week, with the Nigeria international on the flight to Portugal with the CSKA Moscow squad.

Nineteen CSKA players, including the Super Eagle, flew to Portugal, where they will face SL Benfica on Tuesday at 21:45 (Moscow time), writes the official website of the Russian Premier League side.

Whilst Aaron Samuel was involved in CSKA's qualifying round and playoff games against AEK Athens and Young Boys, he has never played in the Champions League group stage.
