okway2: Adetayo Bamiduro and his partner are co-founders of Metro Africa Express (MAX), the latest entrant into the logistics space in Africa. They have some interesting perspectives about fulfilment, one of which is their flagship product – 3-hour delivery within cities, which they are currently using to solve fulfillment problems for a number of companies. MAX's mission is to address one of the critical issues with e-Commerce, by using their first-hand experience gained at working at one of the leading e-Commerce platforms on the continent. Their focus is on-demand delivery (some type of Uber for logistics) – an operating model that’s radically different from traditional couriers. Adetayo Bamiduro is a Nigerian entrepreneur, who earned an MBA at the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Computer Science graduate, who created a start-up, specialising in ‘mobile asset tracking’, straight after university. He’s also an ex-PWC consultant, and has worked in Tech-Enterprise for Nigerian oil company, LNG. “For us, the question is – what’s the biggest challenge that online merchants are facing in Africa and what is the most effective way to address it?” So far, MAX has raised $1.1 million USD in funding from 2 investors across the continent. The startup has now acquired Easyappetite, as it plans to roll out a bespoke food delivery arm – MAX Eats. Easyappetite co-founder Deji Opoola has also joined MAX in a marketing role. Easyappetite, was launched in 2012. The delivery platform provides ordering apps, payment processing and last-mile delivery support to retail businesses and mobile consumers. Last December Disrupt Africa reported that MAX came in second place at the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield event in London, while it also won a “Top 12 Global Inclusive Growth Idea” from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Harvard Center for International Development. It was also the first African team to gain admission into the Techstars startup accelerator programme in New York. http://disrupt-africa.com/2016/09/nigerias-max-acquires-food-delivery-startup-easyappetite/ MAX has crowdsourced couriers, but it also has a baseline staff of people to deliver packages on branded motorcycles. The couriers they employ full-time are paid on a salaried basis, while its crowdsourced couriers — if the demand is there — get paid per delivery. Around 70% of the drivers are full-time. |

The founder of the popular resort, Whispering Palms - a scenic resort in Badagry - is Professor Deji Olufemi Pearse, an 85-year-old retired Professor of Medicine. Witty and quick to poke fun at himself, he is delighted that the objectives of the resort have been realised, especially since people didn’t think he would succeed. Some say he must have got his creative & artistic inclination from his late mother Elsie Femi-Pearse, who was into politics in the 50s. She was a member of the old Action Group, back then. That is why a street was named after her – Elsie Femi-Pearse Street in Victoria-Island, Lagos. Due to her active involvement in politics, people had thought that she would be Chairman of the Lagos City Council, in those days. But she lost, because some of her colleagues in the AG – all male – said 'though Mama was good in social work, hospital work, and that education and social services would improve under her', but she did not know “business.” “Our vision has been well realised. We are happy that we are making Nigerians happy. This is a beautiful country, but we don’t seem to know it. We are showing Nigerians that it’s a beautiful country. When we came here in 1981, people said the man must be crazy. He’s a professor; he has read too many books, he doesn’t know how to spend money. He’s wasting money in this bush but now they say something different. It’s a matter of mission fulfilled for us.” millhouse: From that humble root, Whispering Palms has since become a popular get-away for couples on honeymoon, pre-wedding photo shoots, companies and organisations who appreciate quality. Professor Pearse, whose father was also a medical doctor, laughs heartily when asked if there’s a masterplan for the resort. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxf5fEIVWXw “When you don’t have too much money, you can’t have a masterplan. Government can have masterplan but here everything depends on what is in your pocket,” he says still laughing. “Master plan can be developed when you have big capital or maybe you have stolen big government money and you want to do something huge. But when you are doing something for pleasure, it’s a day-by-day event. We thank God that our ideas have come out as if we had a big master plan. We had no master plan; all we wanted was something for the family and ourselves. |

'Dokun Dairo, trained at the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical School in Ile-Ife, and graduated with a degree in medicine. He later migrated to the US, for postgraduate medical studies, and has since been practising internal medicine. In order to give back to Nigeria part of the knowledge he received abroad, he teamed up with two other partners Ade Adedeji and Wole Faroun, who have business and finance backgrounds, to see how he could help to improve the health sector of Nigeria, using technology. Today, in addition to being a medical doctor, 'Dokun Dairo, is a health tech entrepreneur. The trio set up Medenhanz Resources, an Edtech digital health platform dedicated to providing access to point-of-care reference materials, through computers, mobile phones and other technology-related devices. Medenhanz Resources, also serves as a platform for online continuing professional education, for Nigerian doctors. The firm offers CPD products through which medical doctors can get fast learning, which was one of the big challenges in the health tech space. They have now made it very easy for doctors anywhere, once they have an internet connection, or any smart device such as a phone, tablet or computer to get access to the resource materials they need. So Medenhanz, is now more than just an accessible and affordable web-based and mobile application, for point-of-care clinical reference and continuing medical education, as it not only provides online CPD, but also offers standard treatment guidelines, clinical reference database, drug information etc. What unique features differentiates your MedEnhanz from other players in the space? "I will say that we are unique, and what we do - no other startup does it, in Nigeria. Currently today, most people access CPD through the traditional means, where they have to leave their practices to travel for conferences to do all that, but with our platform, they can easily have that. It is said that the health tech ecosystem in Nigeria is non-existent. Do you believe that this is true? What are your thoughts on this? "I will say 'Yes,' and I will say 'No.' 'No' in the sense that startups like us, are becoming common place in Nigeria, because everybody is trying to put their hands in the space, but we have not been able to recall the level of success that others have been able to recall. The company also has a consumer health service called WebDOC. It is a key component of their population health management tool. Customers get online medical advisories to their health questions/concerns in real-time, from their extensive network of verified licensed doctors. It also comprises personalized health tools, that keeps consumers engaged in their personal health, and with their physicians. MedEnhanz Resources', mission to improve healthcare and clinicians’ efficiency was recognized in 2015, when it won Healthcare Technology Provider of the Year in the 2015 edition, of the most prestigious health service award in the country. It was in recognition of the company’s innovative and effective solutions deployed for the improvement of the field of healthcare in Nigeria. The highest honour for unparalleled excellence in the Nigeria Health sector, was given on June 26, 2015 at a red carpet event organized by Nigeria Healthcare Excellence Awards (NHEA). MedEnhanz Resources, was also approved by the Federal Ministry of Health to develop and deploy the Nigerian Standard Treatment Guidelines in an interactive format for physicians to access, in addition to being accredited and licensed as a pioneer, online CPD provider. |

Founded by Asehinde Oladipo and his partner in 2016, BuyPower is a simple, easy, interactive and user-friendly online platform, where anyone resident in Abuja, FCT Nassarawa, or Kogi State and Niger State, can purchase power units to recharge their prepaid meters. It is available across the country, via its platform or mobile apps. With an estimated 52 percent of Nigerians so far using prepaid meters, according to the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in their homes, these millions need a place to purchase power units whenever such units get exhausted. The objective is to eliminate queues at a DISCO’s office for hours, when people go in just to buy credit to cover electricity kilowatts, by making it possible for such individuals and corporate organisations to buy those recharge units for their pre-paid meters online, using the electronic digital solution called Buypower. BuyPower, therefore, is addressing a huge market; one estimated to be worth millions of dollars annually. If the firm controls just 10 percent of these market; the founders and investors will run smiling to the bank. Customers only need to register which doesn’t take more than 3 minutes. And for them to buy electricity recharge units, they must provide their meter number, the amount of unit they want to buy and the state they are. There are different payment methods they can select from to pay for the transaction such as VISA, MasterCard, PocketMoni, Bank Internet, and Verve. BuyPower, now generates about 1 million Naira monthly, from billing customers NGN 150.00 per transaction. BuyPower seeks to handle all utility payments in Nigeria, after gaining a major foothold in the electricity business. As at today, BuyPower, has 40% of all the prepaid meter subscribers in Abuja on its' platform, and is looking to spread its' services to Jos, in Plateau state. Asehinde Oladipo and his partner Benjamin, met at one of Nigeria’s emerging technology development services companies in Abuja. In the hard-charging startup world that the two men entered, there was little time to remember the minutiae of everyday life — like paying bills on time. “In the midst of our busy schedules we would try to find time to dash down to the electricity company to get electricity for the house,” Benjamin said. Sometimes they wouldn’t make it in time. |

Recently, a senior surgeon in Nigeria conducted a major surgery and flew to the United States. Couple of days later the operated patient had to consult the doctor for further medication; however, unavailability of the doctor became a roadblock in his path to recovery. Unperturbed by the news, the patient took his smartphone, logged into the Dokita247 application, and fixed an appointment with the surgeon for further consultation. With a few clicks, the patient could successfully interact with his surgeon and chart his roadmap to recovery. The distance between the patient and surgeon was sutured by telemedicine –a combination of technology and medicine in the field of healthcare. Telemedicine has opened new avenues and tapping its huge potential is Dokita247, a US-based online telemedicine company that brings medical consultation services to the doorsteps of patients and physicians. The founder and CEO, Dr. Richards Afonja and his CTO, Richard Cobbinah trace their ancestry back to Western Africa. Dr. Afonja a native of Nigeria and Cobbinah from Ghana, are from countries in which the ratio is essentially one doctor per 100,000 civilians, which is lower than the global average. Dokita247 is on track to become the largest and most comprehensive Telemedicine company in the world by eventually having doctors in every country. They aim to be the nation's first and largest Telehealth platform, delivering on-demand healthcare anytime, anywhere, via mobile devices, the internet, video and phone. Their solution will connect patients & clients, with over 1,000 board-certified physicians and behavioral health professionals who treat a wide range of conditions and cases, from acute diagnoses such as upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infection and sinusitis to dermatological conditions, anxiety and smoking cessation. Realizing the importance of on time medical attention, Dr. Afonja laid the groundwork for Dokita247 while Richard Cobbinah a technology savant, respectively, shared the vision to transform the healthcare industry’ and deliver affordable health services to the remotest places. Their objective is to deliver value driven electronic healthcare solutions to served and under-served populations world-wide, with the intent to ensure quality of service and cost savings to clients and subscribers, while ensuring improved qualitative earnings and patient reach for medical service providers on the platform, with a promise to provide a globally acceptable standard of care. Dokita247 provides instant and affordable services to numerous treatable conditions. From allergies to tonsillitis and cramps to migraine, the company helps patients to connect to a network of physicians instantly and seek advice. It creates a platform empowering physicians to work flexibly, expand their reach, and generate revenue without additional overhead costs. |
