Please be quiet. I studied Biochem BS in Nigeria and Biochem MS in U.S and worked as a Biochemist still in U.S. What else do I still have to know about Biochem that I don't know? Biochemistry everywhere is way way different from Microbiology. In fact, Biochemistry is mostly under Chemistry department in U.S.
Lol
You are asking me to keep quiet?
I'm actually a microbiologist and I realized that Being a good microbiologist, your biochemistry must be top notch as well.
If you are a microbiologist and your biochemistry is not at par or almost at, you have 50/100
I actually know you.

You're correct that a good microbiologist has to be good in biochem and visa versa but the concept taught in the two fields are different.... so we can't use that to say they are one and the same. In U.S there is no standalone Biochem department. Biochem falls under Chemistry and under the American Chemistry Society. The exception is at doctorate level where Biochem can stand alone as PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. So, Biochem leans more towards Chemistry and its main concept differs from that of Micro.

Good that you know me but where?

Hmmm,
Thank you all, thouh I am not the questioner yet I benefit a lot.
I am a part 3 microbiology student "ni" OAU.

So we should hope less
My dear, don't let anyone discourage you. I finished from OAU, microbiology department and I made a first class, I'm serving now but have seen many opportunities for first class graduates. Just make sure you study hard and make a good grade, you'd have better chances. Microbiology is a very nice course though personally, if I had a good orientation from my UTME days, I could have gone for accounting cos I'm very good at mathematics and people around me keep asking what I was looking for in sciences in the first place, i'm thinking of digressing a bit from sciences for Masters degree. So dear, whatever gives you joy, go for it, you never can tell what God has prepared for you.

The first two years will be normal... but u have to be focused and dertermined... biochemistry is not difficult, u just need to understand some terms, get the right textbook that will explain and break it down for u in it's simple terms... watch YouTube video tutorials, Biochemistry is Fun!!!

I strongly suggest you write another UME instead of wasting your time with those 2 courses. It is even worse if you are a guy studying Biochemistry or microbiology with the hope of using those degrees to make ends meet.

Medical laboratory science killed those 2 courses a long time ago. All their associations executives of those 2 courses were busy chasing albino rats somewhere in laboratory while laboratory scientist were busy creating departments (units) such as medical microbiology and clinical Biochemistry/chemical pathology which renders the Bsc microbiology and Biochemistry like someone suggested as useless as 'P' in the psychology.

My advice, if you can't exercise some patience till next year ; go for Bsc mathematics (science dept) or Bsc English (art dept). Make sure it's pure mathematics or English. All those cut-and-join courses like industrial mathematics, economics and mathematics, statistics and mathematics, computer and mathematics, and lately mathematics and brewery. Same applies to English. AVOID THEM!! You will be like a bat after graduation : you don't belong to birds nor mammals.

I am a practicing medical laboratory scientist.
bros you have a high degree of humour,
your friends and family will be lucky to enjoy free comedy from you. grin

The reason I asked is because I've heard a lot of people in Nigeria doing a course and then half way into it, they start asking what can they do for work with the course chosen
what you should have done was find something you like doing or marketable and then pick your course based on that.

I studied MLS ( though, not in Nigeria). MLS don't "freak out" when Microbiologist come for their job. The fact remains that microbiologists are "specialist" as suppose to MLS a generalist. MLS comprises of ( clinical chemistry, Hematology, blood banking, microbiology, urinalysis, coagulation, serology, parasitology and virology) most companies do hire MLS because they can do it all and their job isn't only limited to hospital and diagnostic lab. They can also work for food companies, brewery industry, pharmaceuticals just to name a few.

Some MLS do further their education by specializing in anyof the above branches listed. But I personally feel it's limiting their chances.

oh nice, currently studying MLS too.. how's it lyk over dia?
