majekdom2: Well, that was years ago and yes, I'm happy with what I do now as business and I have no regrets whatsoever. I know I earn more than a lot of chartered accountants yearly when I sum up my earnings and I'm happy with that. That doesn't mean accounting is a bad career choice. As a matter of fact, my accounting background has helped me very much in my business. I love to play with figures very well... Was just giving a general assessment of what I know most accountants are facing. There are more than enough chartered accountants in the market who aren't even employed, let alone talk of earning well. I have people who from time to time, ask me to help them link up with any job opportunity and when I go through the resumes they send, quite a number of them are in the accounting field. |

Nazeren:haba, am not that dull not to know who a book keeper is. Okay, how many accounting software do you know about? Let's start from there. Or are you saying there are no accounting software? Enlighten me. |

Adaumunocha: I don't want to work as an accountant. I have my small business that I'm managing and it pays all of my bills and gives me time to do other stuffs. I'm happy with that. Was just giving an opinion on what I feel and know, happens to a lot of accountants. It's a good career path if only you are getting paid well. I know of a colleague who was working with SIAO as an auditor then and was writing ICAN. She now does cake baking and it looks like she's doing very well. |

I'm an accounting student and sometimes I fear the future, we accountants can be disposable. Your company can fire you from your post and replace you with a person with a skill a higher than yours or with a foreigner. That is why we should upgrade and learn accounting skills and practices as possible because, this occupation has become a competitive one and there are thousands of hungry chartered accountants ready to replace you. 1 Like |

Nazeren:sorry you ain't making sense to me. I asked a question and if you couldn't understand my question then keep live it. Because nothing you said made meaning to me. The person I asked/directed the question to answered me perfectly and how i wanted. If you said there are accounting softwares, can't people be trained to use the software without necessary going through the class rooms of chartered? And won't their price be cheaper compared to someone who is a chattered? His answer was YES in financial accounting which is basic, although they are certain things that will still need an accountant who is trained in that field (e.g when you talk of Management and Taxation accounting). I wonder where you jumped in from with your book keeping. Go back and read what i wrote, understand it before you conclude. Take Care Aunty Intelligence. Bye. |

i am going to respond to this issue as a professional and ICAN chartered accountant. op, do not be deceived by people that knows close to nothing about your profession because every profession has its down side. as a professional chartered accountant, of ICAN breed, you need not to worry about the number of accountants in the market. accounting profession has moved from adding figures and being a financial reporting expert. as a financial reporting expert the following are some of your core area of expertise. (a) financial modelling which entails detail management of funds for your organization (b) investment appraisal which entails seeking out profitable investment portfolio for your organization (c) financial analyst which entails advising corporate bodies on ways and means for business success (d) tax adviser which entails managing tax matters so as to pay less tax (e) internal control consultant which entails setting up internal control to reduce fraud in an organization. (f) cost controller which entails providing means to cut cost and control expenses. (g) variance analyzer which entails analyzing the differences between budget and actual to advise management. (h) cash officer which entails maintenance of cash float and imprest account and sundries. (i) payroll manager which entails management of wages and salaries (j) chief financial officer which entails taking decisions on sources and application of funds for your company. (k) management accountant which entails determining the cost of item or services your company render. (l) feasibility studies consultant which entails carrying out study on possible profitable business. there are so many things you can do as a chartered accountants and do not allow anybody to deceive you. i am a proud chartered accountants of ICAN breed and i have never looked back ever since i qualified. however, you may need to start small and build and apply your knowledge and skill appropriately so that the market will locate you. the business environment is rapidly changing and demand for accountants are on the increase so brace up for your job opportunity. as for the pay, accounting is rewarding now. chartered accountants working with small audit firms are not collecting less than 70,000 per month to start with. Chartered accountants working with big firms are not collecting less than 200,000 per month. if eventually you land a dream job as a chartered accountant(ICAN), you may not be rich but you CANNOT AND NEVER be poor because you take home pay per month will not be less than 300,000. in all and all there are medical doctors, lawyers, engineers and others that are underpaid like chartered accountants so we are not different. kindly note what i wrote is for ICAN standard and not for ANAN accountants. please be properly guided. 4 Likes 1 Share |

scobaba:sir, I'm a 23 yr old man currently undergoing this course (ican), I'm in my finals now-I can substantiate this claim if you want me to, I don't really have 'work experience' and I'm looking to get one. I'll like to use this opportunity to ask if there's any vacancy in the firm you work for |

echike:these are are facts! All you've stated are facts. I really like the way you ended it. Relatively speaking, ANAN holders are bunch of lazy people, in climes where high standards are expected there would be no such thing as ANAN, it infuriates me to know that majority, if not all of them are found in the public sector, the fact that the accountant general of the federation holds a ANAN qualification kills me. Truly, the standards are falling. Sir, I'm a 23 year old graduate currently undergoing ICAN, I'm in my finals now, I can substantiate this claim if you want me to. Sir I don't have work experience and I'm looking to get one. I'll like to use this opportunity to ask if there's a vacancy in the firm you work for or if there's a way you can recommend me... |

Kratos3364: It is normal for every graduate who hears oil and gas to want to jump into it. Relax. you will need to build your Accounting experience first. you don't do that in oil and gas. I don't know of any Multi National firm that employs fresh graduates in Accounting department. Most guys in my department for instance did 3-5 years In an Accounting firm before they got here. My Advice...seek employment in firms like PWC, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte or some other top local firms like Adetonai Isichei and SIO. Build your experience there, give urself 4-5 years of experience building and you will see how lucrative the Accounting profession is out there. You will see job offers you may be confused which to choose. you tho have to support yourself with basic ICT skills. The problem we have today is that some Accountants have so engrossed themselves in book keeping that they don't fit into the big firms with sophisticated IT systems. All the best. |
