Good day everyone, please I need help. I'm seriously questioning the quotation given to me by my engineer. He was the one that got the building to this stage. I asked for roofing wood work quotation (without roofing sheets yet), I was given a bill of over 700k with labour inclusive at 350k.

Please the experts should help me scrutinise this. I think it's outrageous especially the labour cost.

What do you think is the appropriate bill for this project?

I will appreciate as many responses as possible. Thanks

Prices of materials is somewhat fair
But the labour cost is too much
This shouldn't exceed 150/200k

Condemned engine oil and kerosene??

Intentionally introducing cancer causing liquids into your building that will cook up under the sun?

No wonder the survival rate is dismal in Nigeria.

Nigerians are innovative. I couldn't help but notice the inclusion of condemned engine oil and kerosene for roofing materials.
They may be onto something new here. I assume it's for wood treatment against termites.
While engine oil and kerosene used to thin it may have some insecticide properties, I doubt it's effectiveness over along duration due to their eventual evaporation under high temperature beneath the roof.
However, the bad engine oil is rich in carbon soot and those would be deposited within the wood.
I'm assuming that's the main component for termite prevention in the woods.

I have 12 anti burglary bars to install.

How do I calculate a fair labor? 4 are small toilet sizes and the rest are standard windows.

Thanks.

I doubt either engine oil or kerosene are carcinogens or cancer causing agents. If hydrocarbons were carcinogens, majority of the world population would have cancer and all those that worked in oil rigs, depots and filling stations would be dead before they retired.
Besides, anything volatile would rise to the surface upwards warm air.
commercial grade wood protection products contain ethyl glycol that are much more toxic to humans.

I took time to go through the articles in the link you posted. I understand your health concern and understandable phobia for carcinogens. I can recollect your comment on how you dread sleeping in a family house with asbestos ceiling.
The first article stated rashes, headaches and tremor as effects of long term exposure in people.
The worst case scenario was done topically applying the used oil on the skin of the mice for a year to maximize absorbing the chemical additives in the oil into the bloodstream through the skin.
The second article agreed that there isn't significant risk from inhalation and here is an excerpt from the article stating this:

Health Hazards

According to Chevron, used motor oils don't present a significant inhalation health hazard. They can, however, present a problem if they come in contact with the eyes or skin, triggering an allergic skin reaction or eye irritation. Long-term effects from repeated contact include a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

Here is another excerpt and direct response to its risk as a carcinogen:

How likely is used mineral-based crankcase oil to cause cancer?
Long-term exposure (365 days or longer) of the skin to used mineral-based crankcase oil causes skin cancer in mice. Oils contain PAHs. Some PAHs have been identified as the cancer-causing agents. Animal tests have shown that the higher the PAH content in oil, the more likely for the oil to be carcinogenic.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the InternationalAgency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the EPA have not classified used mineral-based crankcase oil with regard to its carcinogenicity in people.

The main risk comes from repeated contact with skin and I daresay over a significant surface area for one year.
Despite the fact that our environmental laws aren't effective and residential areas are in close proximity to industries, the major cause of the low life expectancy rate in nigeria is due to avoidable causes like improper nutrition and poor health care services.
There is nothing like working paramedics here and someone that manages to get to a hospital is rejected until he brings a police report and deposit. That is if doctors aren't on strike or they have basic oxygen cylinder.

I actually don't have a phobia for carcinogens per se.

I work in a hospital and I get to see people dying of cancer and other diseases and simply can't fathom why anyone would knowingly use products that are carcinogenic in their house when there are alternatives. Baba Abiba on the farm that barely finished standard 4 I get, but educated folks I don't get.

Good analysis, because the use of this used engine oil and kerosene mixture needs to be tested further for its efficacy in termite prevention before people use it and still get exposed to termite attacks on their roofing wood a few years down the line. The use of that mixture started as an attempt to economise the use of the termite treatment solutions in the market. People started buying kerosene to mix with the original chemical, especially Solignum to increase the volume available to ensure a good spread on the wood.

Then I started getting stories of the used engine oil, added to solignum to achieve the bigger volume. From there I now heard that if you mix the engine oil and kerosene, it is enough to treat the wood and prevent termites, but I need to see it proven. I have seen some mischievous persons mix the used oil and kerosene combo and package them behind their shop in an original solignum container and sell them to people as the factory made original solignum.

I have lost a picture I had, of a wood already treated with anti termite solution and is still on the ground for about 5 days awaiting it's use, but by the time the carpenters came to lift the wood from the ground, termites had started eating the wood on the ground, even chewing some sections painted with the solignum solution grin

It was really funny. The termites didn't even wait to climb up the roof and eat the wood, they ate it in the ground where it's near to them, and also ate the treatment chemical as dessert grin

That's the truth and hence why I don't want to salute/encourage folks that are needlessly adding used oil and kerosene to the list of ways to die.

I'm getting serious about doing my kitchen and I need intelligent guidance on how to price the work.

Is it priced per square feet or it's a free for all price scheme whereby an artisan can demand anything they feel like?

Thanks in advance.

The cost/price of your kitchen is dependent on what you want in it. Spell out your specifications and then allow the experts give you a quote. when it comes to finishing to taste I don't see square meter coming to play cos prices/quality of materials differ while square meter is the same..

The materials is under quoted while the workmanship is inflated.
By merely looking at the drawing you will need between 25 to 30 fascia for the building

From your narrative, I am afraid the practice may have started as means of cheating home owners by adding the oil to solignum to increase volume.
Along the line, they may have convinced themselves that the effectiveness in the solignum/oil mix was a testimony to its own potency also, or they probably assumed since the black oil looks like solignum, then it must act like solignum.
I will try and read on deterring termites with carbon soot and post my findings but my major fear is that the original solignum may have been adulterated in the market with most being just mixture of black oil and kerosene like you stated.

Very true, they mix anything they like and sell to unsuspecting users. I heard they mix the used oil, kerosene and add powdered camphor to get that disinfectant smell.

Material in my opinion is fear, labor should not be more than 120k max for wooden work. Remember his still going to change for the roofing sheet, don't forget gutter water way inclusive in the negotiation if it's in your design. Otherwise that may be another contract.
