Henry240: yes , its impossible a war between nigeria and egypt , too far in geopolitics . For exemple egyptian air force have ready attack strategy for aerial strikes on ethiopia ( in case of war about the Nile river ) . Just For Nigeria a Big country in africa , even if there is no threat at the moment, nigeria must have a respectable air defense ! 5 years is not enough to integrate a good defensive doctrine and master the air defense . and big powers ( France , USA , NATO, in case of revolution, or what they call a moderate insurgency , they will say quickly Nigerian army kills citizens! and strike you the day after easily with zero loses for them , and will put a government under their control and get more access to your ressources , WIN- WIN easily for them , but if you have a good air defense they will think about the military losses they may suffer , Use all their intelligence services and expert to evaluate your air defense systems try to found their location , choose missions with less risk, more time to prepare missions , less freedom to strike where they want when they want , weigh the pros and cons and think twice before interferring . you need a kind of deterrence nigeria sould invest un short , medium range air defense in small number of units to get a first base in the fields and after if needed it can invest in large systems and a big network 10 Likes |

TrueHeart365: The Nigerian military doctrine seems to be interception.. That's why they're more interested in buying aircrafts. For the past how many years, has the airforce talked about purchasing an effective air defence system?. When we're talking about aircrafts, I don't mean some 3 units jf17. Most of our air bases have no aircrafts stationed in them. One thing I'll keep saying is after this jf17, we still need another type of fighter to combine force and that's why I'll always go for a flanker or J-10 because I don't know who will be talking about a Mig 29 to complement a jf17. Chinese SAMS are equally not cheap but we can do with at least 3 units for now. The attitude of purchasing in small units is getting annoying. 1 Like |

Odunayaw: Man, interception won't help us. SAMS keeps pilots busy. And I guess for you to be able to pull some maneuver against a missile, you'll need to drop your tanks. Once you drop those fuel tanks and you're still trying to maneuver in our airspace with additional missiles fired at you, you'll become short of range which means if your current fuel can't take you out, you'll have to agree to being forced to land. 2) if interception is also the doctrine with people posseing EW skills now. Our radars can easily be blinded till our most important airspace gets hit from an almighty km away. NAF needs to work fast on SAMS. Just look at Botswana. |

We might just move on, Nigeria and Egypt ain't gonna fight a war. Except for its geographical location Egypt is not in Africa. It is an Arab power. It's geo-political permutations are primarily Israel and Arab interests for which it arms generously funded by rich gulf nations. As Henry pointed out series of events lead to outright war for which you arm appropriately. As I said u can buy trouble and right now no one wants that trouble least Egypt whose economy is much smaller than Nigeria' and cannot fund or sustain a war against Nigeria rather it's the opposite assuming someone loses his senses. The Jordanian king is giving Nigeria 200 Armoured vehicles and helicopters to follow. What might those be? |

andrewza:I agree 100% with what your saying! but im trying to use the same context as when you said Nigeria doesn't need a proper SAM system.....yes they have no threats now but in the future you never know, hence why we have subs and frigates even though we literally have no naval threat!! |

jln115: Nigeria would be better off expanding there radar coverage and buying more mobile AA and aircraft. South Africa issue is it does not have a war to fight, so it planing for every thing Nigeria has threats to build around. After stabilizing sure they can look at a Sam system but Sam systems are luxuries. Any case Angola GBAD systems did not stop SAAF booming them. |

jln115: The Border War wasn't a full conversational war, everyone "was there because everyone else was there as well".... The Cubans and the SADF were basically attacking each other when they were both in the field at the same time, neither party was willing to go against each other. In a conventional war, South Africa will field mostly light armour which is not much help in defeating heavy armour. If an Abram MBT showed up on our borders we would wish we had more Olifants and Rooivalks with Mokopas. |

tdayof:Since you said/It's obvious our NAF doctrine is interception Building an integrated Radar coverage system would be our best bet...presently I know of the p13,p35 GCI radar and p17 height finder. then the recent Tin Shield You would agree with me that we should actually be on the hunt for APAR radars |
