KOSSO WOOD IDENTIFICATION AND SPECIFICATION
The kosso tree height varies from 12 to 15 m. The bark is stiff, blackish and scaly. The branches have long shoots which bend downwards. The first golden-yellow flowers appear in January when the tree is quite leafless. Kosso tree provides some of the finest wood from dry forests. The wood is a beautiful, rich rose-red or dark brown, mottled with dark streaks. It has a handsome, fine-grained appearance.

Identifying kosso tree while still on stand and when cut down is very essential for the traders or buyers because I have experienced locals mixed wood that is not anyway related to kosso with the real kosso wood to buyers that have difficulties identifying which is the real kosso and you know what that means, all money paid for such fake woods is a total loss. So identifying original kosso wood is a first task for would be learners.
The kosso tree after identification is then cut down and either dressed/sawed before hauling out of the bush or hauled out from the bush before been sawed or dressed. Clean sawing /dressing is highly required as the cleanliness of the sawing will determine how fast you are able to get a buyer when it gets to market.
Big sized kosso wood devoid of holes and rotten (cancerous-the term used on the field) part command good price in the market more than small sized ones with same characteristics. Acceptable size/specifications of sawed/dressed kosso wood start from 12 inches while sizes between 15 inches upward is highly desired by the market i.e Min Sizes: 25cm by 25cm by 210cm

This shouldn't be encouraged.why do we have to export it for them to finish (process) and then sell it back to us? the exportation has been banned though. So anything you are doing now is illegal

SOURCING FOR KOSSO WOOD
It usually takes between 14 to 28 days to source for a container-full kosso wood is between 100-120 logs of kosso wood in number determined usually by the size of the wood. How fast a buyer is able to put such numbers of wood together depends on the network of supplier he has and it takes about 2-3 days to transport to the market. As stated above the cost of wood depends on it size, and how good it is (devoid of holes and rotten part). The bigger the wood, the higher the price. Dry season is related to high supply of kosso wood while rainy days are related to scarcity. Currently, a piece of kosso wood is been sold for between 12000 and 14000 naira depending on the size.
Some locals that are financially buoyant will process the wood from the bush and haul it out for buyers to purchase life and direct….this is called see and buy while other locals that can’t meet the financial demand to do that will run to prospective buyers for money to do the processing and haul out to the loading point.
The second method hold a danger for buyers without sound field experience who can easily lose money to the locals who in some cases might collect processing money from one or two other people the same way he received money from you for same purpose and the two/three of you will lay claim to the same kosso wood when it is time to load and fighting that sometimes lead to court case is thereby established between the two or more owners. While the first option of sourcing (see and buy) is better, such wood are usually too small to meet specification that will command good price especially during raining season.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE MARKET

After sourcing for good kosso wood from the different location where they are available, the woods are then loaded into a leased trailer for upward transportation to either of shagamu, ogere or mowe/ ibafo and sometimes owerri where Chinese buyers come in to purchase your woods. Loading into the trailer currently goes for between ₦800 and ₦1000 per piece of kosso wood and the cost of trailer to transport to the market from Taraba to Shagamu goes for between ₦600,000 and ₦800,000. The reforestation/government revenue charge to hammer a trailer after loading varies by each state where kosso woods are available depending on where the wood is sourced, with Taraba state having the highest charge of #400,000 per trailer of wood. Cross river charges #350,000, Benue state #150,000, Niger #40,000, Kwara #30,000, Kogi #85,000 etc. Some road expenses will be incurred during transportation to settle roadblocks of police, army and produce officers that might range from a minimum of 20 to up to 50 in number with the highest number to be encountered in between Taraba and Benue state.

OFFLOADING GOODS AT THE BEACH/YARD

The place where the kosso wood is offloaded for sales (market) is usually called beaches or yards located in Shagamu, Ogere, Mowe/Ibafo all in Ogun state and Futo/Poly Nekede road, Owerri, Imo State. It is some people's business to own a beach/yard. Kosso Traders/Exporter bring their wood to the beach, offload from the trailer and load into container for sale to Chinese or export and pay the beach owner. The charge of beach owners varies from #50,000 to #100,000 or more depending on your negotiating ability and the agreement reached with the beach owner. Chinese buyers come into the beach/yard to inspect and buy wood. If you have cleaned sawed/dressed, big wood, devoid of holes and rotten part, your wood will be bought on time. After your wood has been checked and certify good (gooder -in Chinese English) by the Chinese, they will bring in their container and load your wood into the container and payment will be made into your bank account before they will be eligible to move/transport it out of the yard to the port where they will export it to their country (that is actually none of your business anymore) because you have been paid and the rest is their problem.
