It was the Hashemite king himself who told President Buhari about the AFV and Helos -- just curious? Apparently there are countries that have a lot of goodwill towards Nigeria but there are many more who wants it dismembered like the former Yugoslavia and those are the secret powerful fingers behind Boko haram and IPOB. My assumptions point to some in the west. Still thanking God Obama was defeated; may have been worse with Clinton who relishes lecturing Nigeria at every turn. There is just this sinister agenda that clearly exist. Whoever can't stand the idea of the peaceful rise of a black power which if not subtly weakened from within with domestic enemies would eventually outstrip them. Everyone does that against a potential adversary. We gotta wake up. The confidence of Kanu and Shekau beggars belief.
do u talk and think from your ....

where those countries also responsible for the President one sided tribalistic appointment?

where their also responsible for d killing of unarmed farmer n civilians by the Fulani's whom the President is their grand patron?

where their also d one who made issue that wicked statement of 97% 5% .

Biafra agitators have always been by the corner but buhari's tribalism drove somany sympathizer to them.

@ jln115 take notice of the added armour on the BAE Iklwa, this is a testament to the changed war doctrine. Days of going into Angola and rushing back to Namibia in a few hours (and deny your involvement) are gone, whenever we invade another territory (or defend against one) it would be officially so protection is more important than hitting 120k/h on gravel road.
I took note, but when im talking armour I mean firepower as in guns!! BAE Iklwa still only has a 30mm so not really Armour by definition, only the Ratel 90 is close to what you could consider as light armour.

Maybe someone like andrewza or frumentius might want to join our debate........I think they might have a bit more to add with regards to our current doctrine, than me and you....well certainly me anyway!!

andrewza/frumtius the question is: In terms of our current doctrine, have we somewhat moved away from our manoeuvre/mobility warfare doctrine like we had in the border war era, to a more attrition type warfare doctrine? and what in your opinion is the way to move forward? Is manoeuvre warfare still the order for a day in Africa or is has the African theatre moved more to a attrition type warfare?

Feel free to add to the question Mr Kruger!

I read somewhere that all our civilian Radars as well as the Radars of the South African Weather service are also linked to LinkZA.......and with over a 100 proper airports in SA , I would say we have pretty extensive radar coverage.

200 spartan APC's and typoon MRAP's to be bought from jordan ,to me its still appalling. let alone the issue of them being donation(which i doubt),when the same jordan had 25 of 50 of it paramount group mbombe APC's built by KADDB (King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau) in jordan. when will africa industrialise when we just buy from others,i doubt that there are african countries that can't assemble streit group APC's or MRAP's. its not an issue of energy, logistics, skilled manpower e.t.c what most african countries lack is the will

i can assure you even if they give AH-1's ,it will be those they acquired back in the 80's .which i doubt their airworthiness,it will be just be ploy to have you buy weapon's and vehicles e.t.c more from their military industries

South African milltary do training according to defence review is to use manvour elements of the mechnized force to postion and engage the enemy from long range. So our doctrine is very much not attrision. More Armor is due to improvements in the weapons of the enemy and that it can be done with out compromising mobility.

Added to the top motorized battalions are to secure lines of Comuncastion and defend vital points freeing up mechnized and Armored battalions to attack.

Light and specialized infantry will operate behind enemy lines

But if you look in to the training and war games you can see mobility is still how we will fight our wars.

So what is our long term strategy to increase our Armour capability(As in our armoured corps), The new Badger fitted with Ingwe will obviously be added to our Armoured formation, and obviously there once was a requirement for an Olifant replacement.....but only a 100 or so units. As you said mobility is still the way we will fight in the future, those this mean that we will be looking more in to lighter, faster wheeled vehicles in the future if we decide expand our armoured capability......a newer Rooikat 105mm or modern Eland replacement comes to mind!!, or will we focus more on replacing our heavy less mobile armour like the Olifant? maybe building up a decent Tank fleet!!

@Activatekruger anything you'll like to add?? also whats your take on how we should expand our armoured capability, maybe a Rooikat with a 120mm would be a great mix of firepower and mobility?

That's a Patmor (patrol mortar) Very bad practice to call it a knee mortar for obvious reasons.

Most SADF units (MECH and MOT) used them. Excellent weapon. We used it for illumination, HE, and target marking. An experienced gunner can consistently drop 60mm bombs on a tank size target at 500+ meters. My platoon patmor crew could put 6 in the air before the first one dropped. We could spread a lot of ammo throughout the platoon, because the rounds were so small.
Its very usefull for a platoon commander to have a indirect fire weapon in his toolbox.

Dayumnnn....its a pity people here are too hung up on their peculiar little obsessions (Ara,Tavor etc etc)to realise what an inestimable war fighting advantage this capability is regardless of Mech or Mot warfare. Nothing beats having that organic fire capacity on call.

piety. The flames of patriotism have finally burned through every shred of sanity that you have left. I envy your level of patriotism however I cannot be mad. Madness is what you have here. So for you I would say we have the best air defence systems, I woukd say we have very patriotic and strategically thinking persons in the DOD and I would say it's in the best interest of the Brave young men who are sent to the front line to face high calibre ammunitions with nothing but the body of a soft skinned vehicle between them and the enemy, while the Policy makers move around in the safety of our big cities in Heavily armoured customised convoys like its a battle field . , You think I am not a patriot like you but you are wrong bro.

okay ,to begin with I'm not even near "patriotic"
second I never said we had the best air defence system Nigeria is over

923,768 km²

there's no way France could raid our airspace completely like the person i quoted stated ,without having their jet shot down

France has over 2billion investment in Nigeria ,compare to any francophones nations around ,why would they want to risk that over mere cameroon?

if France is stupid enough to back France ,then Nigeria will just slip to Russia for backing ,after all most of our military hardwares comes from Russia ,and also special forces

finally Nigeria is in peace time (I mean no external aggression with her neighbors) before the insurgency and after you'll see Nigeria military has acquired a way too many hardwares ,strict trainings and others ,that's just how it is ,why hunt when there's no animals to he hunted??

where was France when general buhari pursue tchadians deep into their capital?? 1983

or when Nigerian battalion March into Yaoundé during abacha's regime??

Nigeria military possessions are enough for now ,if the needs arises I'm sure you'll see Nigeria acquiring hard wares like the days of Nigeria -Cameroon's dispute over bakassi

My opinion though

You are a Fulani so I don't expect any fair judgment from you.

What the guy said is 100%. And as long as ur grand patron continues with his tribalism the problem will continue to remain.

IPOB has it's membership worldwide and funding can come from any where (internal and foreign) as long as it's members stay true to it's cause.

Buhari needs to do the right thing and apologize to Nigerians for running the most tribalistic, divisive and ineffective government in the history of this country.

Tackle the grievances before talking about funding.

What a dull government grin

Size of the country does not matter and they don't need to capture Nigeria. Did NATO occupy Libya? Cameroon hyperthytical what if but it does show how France has influence in Africa and many friends.

The French Air force could easily maintain air superiority over Nigeria for the duration of what ever they doing. Of course it will not be for ever. The best Air defence Nigeria poses is the Roland a French system they built and they know all it limitations.

As was stated wars of occupation are rare in Africa but let's say there is a border dispute between Cameroon and Nigeria. If France backs Cameroon Nigeria looses.

Russia won't help you. They don't get any thing from Nigeria in fact Nigeria is a larger oil supplier so if you are weakened and in turmoil oil prices goes up and Russia benefits. But if you African do the look to Russia for aid at best China but even then they need the west more than Africa.

Any body in Nigeria that thinks they can win a full blown war against France is crazy. The French army is while trained, experienced in African war fare and battle tested. Of all the NATO members there is no better force for fighting in Africa. They have access to plenty of local bases, troops in country, allies and the Money to best any nation in the Francephobe region.

Our doctrine is/was also heavily influenced by logistics. The heavier your get, the more trucks you need in your echelon and the more your rely on engineering ,mechanics etc. Our logistics were heavily stressed in 88/89. The infrastructure in Africa also comes into play. Bridges and roads can only take so much weight.

Same issue with up gunning Rooikat to 105/120mm. You have less rounds on board and thus become more reliant on your log. tail catching up. Similar to having a smaller fuel tank.

modern warfare is not always about boots on the ground approach

to defeat a country all u need to do is

1.ensure air superiority indirectly limited ground superiority

2.ensure naval superiority

3.take out industrial centers like oil installations , factories , shipyards , electrical grids etc

these will ensure that ground , air and naval routes r off limits ie complete economic blockade

then the target countries economy will come to a grinding halt in a few weeks

with crisis in supply of essential goods plus no replenishment the target country will be forced to come to terms and negotiate a way out.

so warfare is not one dimensional it is multi dimensional

those who clamor for war in todays age do not understand the severe penalty for it , the after effects will send a country to medieval ages at the minimum if not dark ages.

around 10-20 or more conventional HPM E-bombs will bring any mid sized country to its knees with large scale damages both industrial , financial and household running into hundreds of billions without firing a single bullet.
