newafricaken254: Why would you compare an F-18E with an SU-22. That would not be a fiar comparison . How ever it was not the F-18E missile that brought down the SU-22. How Did a 30-Year-Old Jet Dodge the Pentagon's Latest Missile? The AIM-9X Sidewinder failed to bring down an aging attack jet. By now you've probably heard that a U.S. fighter shot down a Syrian jet about a week ago. What you might not know is that before the F/A-18E hit its target, it missed–and it missed with the best, newest U.S. missile. On June 18, just moments after a Syrian Arab Air Force Su-22 attacked Coalition forces, a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet strike fighter rolled into a firing position and opened fire. The Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 "Fitter" and launched the Military's most advanced short-range air-to-air missile, which promptly missed. While the plane was eventually brought down by another, different missile, the question remains: why did the AIM-9X Sidewinder miss? ActivateKruger: According to CNN, the Navy Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 Fitter at a range of 1.5 miles. The Super Hornet launched an AIM-9X, and the Syrian pilot loosed flares to lure the infrared guided missile away from his fighter. The trick worked, and the American missile missed. The Super Hornet then launched an AMRAAM missile which, using radar guidance, is unaffected by flares. This time the Fitter went down. 4 Likes |

newafricaken254: I only know they were rebuilt at a licenced facility;there's no other way the US would've allowed such a project. I searched for info on this and only found KADDB,King Abdullah 2 Design and Development Bureau. Set up in 99 it was the ME's first indigenous military industrial rebuild and local production facility. King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) is an independent government entity within the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) aiming at becoming a global defense and security research and development hub in the region. The Bureau’s scope of work includes Defense Design and Development, Test and Evaluation, Technology Incubation in the Kingdom, and Defense Technology Training.http://www.kaddb.com/en-us/ABOUT-US/INTRODUCTION Basically, that's why they're selling us their equipment! This is smth we could have/should've done by pooling our resources together.....anyway! They produce everything from MRAPs,pistols, mortars,C 235 gunship version in conjunction with ATK and are now working on the larger 295(can't wait!). In collaboration with KADDB, ATK developed and provided the system integration and aircraft modifications to turn a CASA-235 cargo plane into a multi-mission gunship. Modifications included the installation of an electro-optical targeting system, a laser designator, aircraft self-protection equipment, a synthetic aperture radar and an armaments capability that provides sustained and precise firepower in a variety of scenarios using Hellfire laser-guided missiles, 2.75-inch rockets, and a side-mounted M230 link-fed 30mm chain gun. The ATK-supplied gun is controlled by the fire-control system, automatically linking the gun’s aim point to the selected target of interest, as illuminated by the mission operators using the laser designator. These capabilities are integrated with and controlled by ATK’s Mission System that provides both day and night reconnaissance and fire control capabilities, and the ability to acquire, monitor and track items of interest https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/ac-235.htm I always say,the first step is the most important. The King is a visionary! 2 Likes

Henry Henry, there have been many comments recently on the prowess of Nigerian armed forces that should have gotten your head rolling 2 ways. Anyway, let's do a bit of basic analysis: "....Speaking during a bilateral meeting with King Abdullah II shortly after his address to the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York on Tuesday, Buhari thanked the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for its support to Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism and insurgency with the donation of military hardware and the pledge to further supply helicopters. President Buhari according to a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina also reassured King Abdullah of Nigeria’s commitment towards the proposed Aqaba Process...." 1. First announced at the UN meeting between Buhari and the Jordanian head; long after we received the first batch of Streit vehicles. Discussions have been ongoing before now and still continuing before the donation. Note this is a donation of 200 vehicles. 2. The 177 Streit vehicles were ordered and paid for by the Nigerian Ports Authrioty. It was not a donation, it was a purchase. The first batch of vehicles was produced in the UAE not Jordan. Let's do the maths. About 25 vehicles were supplied as first batch leaving 152 which will come from their Jordanian facility. 152 in no way equates to 200. 3. Let me rephrase my previous questionable statement: I do not see the Nigerian military doing a significant procurement of the ARA MRAP. Why? Antecedents: --Past events tell me they'll do their usual photo ops purchase less than 20 and that's it. --Proforce has a quality vehicle in the PF2, the army has not made any attempt to replace as few as 50 toyota hilux with the PF2. The police hasn't made any significant order either. --The PF2 was there and still is, when the airforce made the ridiculous purchase of 11 or 12 Polish Honker vehicles, approved by the MOD. --How many of the military's over 500 Toyota pickup trucks used in field operations have been uparmoured by Proforce? Very few (or none). If you know better, I'll like to hear it. You know the reason we've lost many good men and young officers to bh ambushes? 4. Would you like the army to add another line of armoured vehicles to their inventory after the BigFoot, Reva, MaxxPro, Caiman, Streit Spartan & Typhoon, and this Jordanian donation of 200 vehicles? I support local capacity but the logistic nightmare will be horrible if it isn't already. Like you I wish the donation wasn't real, but it is. andrewza: I know these Somalis, you don't! Let me repeat what I said to someone this year. These guys are deliberately acculturated to believe in a superiority over bantus. They're hair of which they're exceedingly proud of is a sign Allah loves them more than African (madh madhou, hard hair, don't laugh!). They can't reconcile this belief with the presence of Kenyan,Ugandan and Burundese (!?) troops on their sacred soil. Also most Somalis ,thanks to limited exposure and straitened circumstances really can't contribute to a thread of this type. Most 20-40 year old Somalis are products of liberal Western immigration policies-they live in the UK,France,Sweden and the US but still aren't Brits,French or Swedes. They get by in the physical and self made mental ghettos of those first world nations. Some with a little knowledge know how pitiful Zoomalia truly was-the knowledge of insignificance pains them like a lost limb. A perpetual 5th world country constantly near starvation with the most bare arsed military assets. IIRC,many of the army officers who led the Ethio invasion were illiterate! After independence, the Somali Republic adopted an irrendentist foreign policy with the intention to reconstruct the pre-colonial borders and establish an all-encompassing Greater Somalia. This culminated in several conventional wars and border skirmishes in the form of the 1964 Border War, the Shifta War, the Ogaden War, the Rhamu Incident, and the 1982 Border war, which pitched the Somali military against other forceshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_Somalia In the few years of existence they sparked off 3 major wars and didn't win one! Here are their 2 SN Osa boats and an overturned T34 in Harar during their ill fated Ethiopian invasion. The last pic was found abandoned in the 93 UN mission to the Mog. So what do they do? They compensate-screaming,denigrating those beneath themselves and praising their own few 'heroes,'so scant in number they're actually nothing but Al Shabaab murderers-check their posts here on NL. Observe their chosen form of interaction with others. Believe you me-this place is salty enough without their peculiar pathologies. 1 Like

Deway7575: This is why I'm puzzled when the nonsensical question is "where are these donated vehicles?" Occam's Razor: the 2 countries have been negotiating this for some time and decided to announce it to the world at the UNGA. Logically, next announcement will be schedule of deliveries. I refuse to believe Aso Rock is so incompetent as to confuse a donation with the prior purchase in June 2016 from Streit. Still hope it's Ratels . PICS: Jordanian Ratels

ActivateKruger:No fan of Vlad's equipment but one can't draw any meaningful comparisons from such encounters. At the end of the day, it comes down to training. All the Gucci air gear in the Saudi coalition hasn't made any difference in Yemen, because of poor training. For all of Egypt's assets for example, the Israelis still have an edge because of their superb training, in my opinion. Training, systems of systems count for a whole lot more in aerial warfare between peer adversaries. POSTSCRIPT: Turkey /NATO F-16 downing a Russkie Fencer doesn't count. Syrian Flankers doing the same to a US Warthog is just as likely. 2 Likes |
