2017 WAFU Nations Cup Preview: Ghana, Nigeria in titanic final

Ghana and Nigeria will battle for the right to be crowned 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations champions when they meet in the final at Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday, kick-off at 18h00 local time.

Ghana, the hosts and defending WAFU champions, earned their spot in the final with a 2-0 win over Niger on Thursday: Kwame Kizito and Stephen Safro scored the goals for the Black Stars, who have looked strong contenders throughout the tournament. This will be their second final appearance, having beaten Senegal 3-1 back in 2013.


Nigeria, meanwhile, edged Benin 1-0 in their semifinal. Rabiu Ali scored in the first half for the Super Eagles, who probably should have won the match by a more convincing margin. This will be Nigeria’s third WAFU final appearance: they beat Senegal 2-0 in 2010 to win their first and only title, while their second showing was a 3-2 loss at the hands of Togo in 2011.

Ghana and Nigeria have already met once in this WAFU tournament: the Super Eagles beat the Black Stars 2-0 in the teams’ final Group A match on Monday, though it must be noted that the home side had already guaranteed themselves top spot regardless of the result.

Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu insists that his side is more than capable of claiming revenge against the Super Eagles when the teams meet again in the final.

“We will be very prepared for Nigeria. They beat us last time so we have to come out strong to turn the table against them come Sunday,” he said at the post-match conference.

“They are a very good side, but we have to fight very hard.

“You know we are the defending champions, but that now belongs to history. Sunday will be a new chapter we have to open and we will do so by trying to beat Nigeria.

“The last time (we met), we had issues as regards injuries, but I hope we have all the players fit on Sunday and we will come very, very strong against Nigeria.

“It won’t be an easy game, they won’t find it easy as well.”
Ghana and Nigeria have met in 49 previous matches, according to FIFA statistics. The Black Stars have claimed 19 wins - compared to 11 for the Super Eagles - and outscored their opponents 72 goals to 44 in the process.

Corsica is not a member of Fifa but Togo is. That is part of why Togo's game stands despite all those subs made that day plus the fact it met all other requirements and counted as "other matches" in the FIFA rule book.

If we count the penalty goal against Corsica then Nacho has scored 8. So yes two pens... but Sir Chrisooblog is right to say one pen out of the seven goals.

Zambia FA President Kamanga: Why Chipolopolo Will Beat Nigeria In Uyo

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president, Andrew Kamanga has revealed that the driving force behind his country’s quest to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup is the fact that it would be their first ever appearance at the Mundial and that the Chipolopolo are motivated to beat the Super Eagles when both teams clash in Uyo on October 7, according to FazFootball.com.


Kamanga said Zambia is drawing motivation from being the only team in Group B that had never been to the World Cup.

“We are putting in every effort to make sure that this team is adequately prepared as we face Nigeria, which for me is the do or die game whoever wins that game will be assured of going to Russia 2018,” he said.

“But most interestingly in this group, we are the only ones who have never been to the World Cup, but with the favour we continue to draw on we should be able to qualify, come November because we have the advantage of playing already eliminated Cameroun in the final round.”




The FAZ Supremo is also unshaken in his belief that the Chipolopolo are capable of beating the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium which the Nigerians have turned into a sort of fortress in the World Cup race after 3-1 and 4-0 wins over Algeria and Cameroon respectively.

He added: “The must-win game is Nigeria, and I think our team has demonstrated the capacity to win away from home.”

The Super Eagles top Group B with 10 points, three more than Zambia and a win in uyo will hand the World Cup ticket to Nigeria while any other outcome will take the fight to the final day of the qualifiers when Nigeria will travel to Algeria while Zambia play at home to Cameroon.
