Taking my bath that morning was an Herculean task. I was scared as hell, I felt like another snake, well this time around, a bigger one could just pop out off the toilet or beneath the door, to come and revenge the death of it's colleague. Due to this, I occasionally kept looking left and right, up and down, while I felt the cold shower rain on my body, I had beside me a mub.
Mayson on the other hand, went to the bathroom, poured water on his body and soon he was out with towel round his waist and soap in both ears and some parts of his head.
"Mayson you fast o" I said, while looking at the soapy substance on his head.
"wetin happen why you dey look me like that" he inquired, looking at himself like something was wrong.
"Mayson, soap dey your ear o" i said, "E be like say you rush enter the bathroom come out".
"thank you o, me no even know say soap full my head and ear like this" he replied. He cleaned his head and his ears.
"Temy, how e wan be.?" He continued. "make we enter Uniben make we go chill for there. Make we popori small"
"bros, everything dey your hand o" I said.
I had some few changes with me, so I felt our movement that day would be a remarkable one.
it has indeed been long since I last visited Uniben. I can still remember vividly writing my second Jamb there. I scored 235 in that exam, I was happy, I went to church to give thanks to God. When it was time to write my post UME, in University of Benin (UNJBEN), I wasn't nervous at all. I wrote it excellently well and came out with 56.
I was happy though because I felt I had cleared the school cut of mark which was 50, but when it was time to check my admission status after about 2 weeks of the results being released, I wasn't admitted.
"Temy, I don ready." Mayson said. I was already lost in thought. I was far gone.
"you said?? I asked, practical lost
"make we dey ball",he said.
"mehn... Today na popori day o. Me wan even swim sef. E don tey wey me don enter that side o" I said. With a broad smile on my face.
I didn't know danger was locking ahead.

We boarded a bus to Ugbowo, the atmosphere was magnificent. Traders, workers, police men, bus drivers, students, just to name a few could be seen indulging in various legitimate activities.
Beside the university was a beautiful bakery called, Nadia bakery. We went into the bakery and bought ourselves some snacks and drinks, we were served by white people who looked like Germans.
We then went into the University, the University was empty, only few students could be seen around. We strolled to the university sports complex, the complex was jam packed with athletes' involving in all kinds of activities such as basketball, karate, handball, football, choreography, just to say the least.
"mehn, Uniben dope o" I said, admitting what my eyes are informing me. "O' Lord why I dey AAU?.. See the beautiful trees, wao... The lawns are just magnificent"
"E get why" Mayson said
"no be lie sha, me and you for fit no even see, we for never know ourselves" I said.
"follow me,make we stroll go inside the school, make we observe if we fit find any loose guarded babe" Mayson said,
I followed him behind, while I observed the school environment. Memories of the past kept recollecting itself, it kept flooding my brain . It was like, I was seeing mental pictures of my past in real life. I can still remember myself visiting Uniben some few years back, during the cause of writing PUME. It was an experience that I will never forget for a very long time. That very period, I was strolling through a place called 'Basement', when I saw a girl dressed in white crying very close to the Bush. I was sure of what I saw, so I rubbed my eyes again to be sure but.... But this time she wasn't there. She had vanished.
I told the guy I was staying with during the PostUME about what I had seen, he didn't doubt me. He told me stuffs like happens in University of Benin.
"Mayson na for this side, I been see one girl wey dey cry o, for night" I said, as we strolled towards the school basement.
"forreal.... Ahh, make we do move comot here o" he said.
we hadn't gone too far before we were summoned by the school security men who were stationed around that axis.
"Heyy... Stop there don't move." One of the guards said.
I looked towards Mayson direction, like... "E be like say na we them dey call o" .
We didn't run so we approached them, like the gentlemen we were. They were five in number.
"wetin you dey do for here?" Another man asked
"we just dey stroll" Mayson said
"Una no know say strike dey, Una just dey waka any how?" The boss amongst them inquired. He was small and dark, with a very brown teeth, he also wore a face cap. The security men weren't even on security uniforms.
"check their pocket... Check their pocket well.... Make we see wetin Dem carry" one of then said.
"say Wetin happen?" I flared up.
"you dey follow us drag?" They inquired.
"una go sleep for prison today... Where are your ID cards?"
"we don't attend this university" Mayson said
"were Una for dey come... You no know say, them no dey waka anyhow for here" the woman amongst them asked.
"we be final year students from ekpoma, AAU" Mayson said
"AAU..... You guys are cultist" she said
"but.... How... Why?" I stammered
"so.. Una no dey this school. Una own don finish. WHERE ARE YOUR TOURING PERMIT?" The boss asked.
"which one b touring permit again now, this na school o.... This na federal school. We no carry any implicating thing why una con dey harass us now ?" I asked, already angry at this disgrace.
"you go know now" he said " Criminals,.... see this one with iPhone 7. You go sleep cell today"
"bros, na iPhone 6x o" Mayson said
"Una... Wan correct me abi... Mmm" the boss amongst them said
They radioed their other colleague at the crime office, and before we knew it, a van for carrying criminals..... Or lemme put it in a more pleasant way *the van for carrying those who infringed the law came swiftly*.
"where are the criminals"? One of the three securities guards, who came in the van inquired as they came out of the vehicle.
"Mayson, Wetin we do?.." I tried asking Mayson to know if the fault was from us.
I didn't want to go to prison, this wasn't what I was expecting. I came to have fun, I needed it. The stress at AAU was just too much. I wanted to relax my mind, body and soul... My supervisor was on my neck demanding 40k for project, I have got dues to pay and clearance too but here I am going to God knows where.
"Temy, chill, everywhere go good" Mayson said.
We entered into the van, without handcuffs in our hands, we just couldn't do anything.
"which one be touring permit again" I tot.

P.S I'm sorry for using too much *broken English*... It's not that I don't know English o... But when I'm with my guys.. Na broken sure pass

I just dey read your story, nah so so laugh I just dey laugh...
Ofolo basement, I no fit forget that arena walahi.. I write UNIBEN Post utme twice but the thing no work out. I can also remember a similar experience that happened to me at their Ekewan campus. We come night reading and knowing fully well that u don't come inside the school compound once it's past 7pm without students card. I and my guys (Jambites then) use strong head go watch football match (Champions League) and when we were done, we come jump fence. Oboy, nah so this security personnels hold us oh. E come be say cultists jump fence enter school prior to that day and collected the security on duty's gun. This people talk say nah we be the cultists upon say dem Search our bags and phones but at the end, them call Agho police division office and before they arrived, I and my friends were freed but they sent us out (that was happening at about 12am). We had no choice other than to go crash for one of our guy place. Them torture every other person aside me coz they said I looked innocent and I didn't take any phone along with me, moreover I was composed and rightly answered all questions they asked me during the interrogation.
I can't forget that incident and many others I experienced at UNIBEN (Ekewan campus).
Thanks for bringing back those moments and memories.
More grace (YungTemy)...

The van made a U-turn round the school auditorium and sped off straight to the crime office. And there I was in the middle of two security guards, like I had stolen a huge part of Nigeria's treasury or something. It was indeed a misfortune for me.
"bros, we no do anything o" I tried explaining to one of the officers in the vehicle.
"don't you know, ASUU is on strike and nobody ... No student should be in the school premises" the driver said.
"but.. We didn't know" Mayson tried to explain. "we just came to have fun, that's all"
"which school do you attend?" He asked
"we are final year students of Ambrose Alli University" I said
"Ambrose Alli?...Ahh"??.. You guys will be investigated" he said.
At the mention of AAU, there was a sudden calmness in the vehicle. No one said a word, the only sound we could hear was the voice a Benin lady forming posh British Accent on radio. I giggled.
"so you dey laugh... Na SARS go investigate Una today" the security guard beside me said. I observed him closely, and I could see three long tribal marks on both side of his face. It was as if, he fought with huge dogs, cat or lion while he was still a kid but that wasn't my business.
The vehicle halted at the crime office. We were told to come out of the vehicle, We came out and there we were face to face with the chief security officer.
Officer: So you guys are causing nuisance in this school environment?
Me: Sire, it's not the way you look at it.
Officer: I don't have much to say right now. You guys will be investigated... Where are your ID card s?
Mayson: We didn't carry it along with us.
Officer: Please take them inside. You are not serious.
We were led inside the crime office, and told to take our sit. The humongous AC at the side of the huge hall blew cold breeze into my chest.
There were about 5 securities on guard at that period, they payed no attention to us at all, instead there were deeply engrossed in their random discussion about issues that wouldn't put food on their table.
Officer1: Why Neymar go leave Barcelona. That guy no dey reason well. How he wan take win awards now?
Officer2: See... See this wan, if na you... You no go move? When money don dey involved.
Officer3: Money no be about everything. See ehn... I don touch money, I know how it feels.
Officer1: Wetin this one dey talk, na him you still dey here like this. I hope you know say you go soon retire. Last last na pension scheme go end am.
Officer3: Rubbish, see ehn... I'm a prince. If I go to the Obas palace right now, .... Right now, ehn...they will give me an house and car. See this wan.
Officer4: Why didn't you shave your hair when the last Oba died?
Officer3: Of course I did. I shaved my hair when the last Oba passed on. Of course.
Officer1: Point of correction, the Oba doesn't die, he only joined his ancestors.
Officer3: That's exactly what I meant... What's the difference between join and went to meet his ancestors?
"choo! This man dey ask me question?.." I tot. I was cut up in their conversation already. I looked down, and continued pressing my phone.
**************************
"sir, its been 2 hrs now, pls we have to go home" Mayson pleaded.
It has actually been 3 hrs since we've been in detention. We just sat there doing absolutely nothing. No one cared to ask, what our case was or what we had done wrong.
"we can't let you go except you show us your ID cards" he said.
"but its in school and we never thought of bringing it. We cant go back to ekpoma...,the distance is just too long" I said.
"you guys must bring it... You will have to go back to school.. I'm sorry" the officer said.
"mehn..." I wondered. I looked towards Maysons direction, and I could see sadness written all over his face.

ASUU STRIKE

Dedicated to all Nigerians

"Mayson you don hear the latest?" I asked, with a broad smile.
"wetin happen?" He asked, with curiosity written all over his face.
"mehn, ASUU don strike, men done dey loose guard men for the town, men don dey move go house" I said
"na lie... Why ASUU go strike when we never even start exam, mtcheww, Exam na next month here o. Na graduation things we suppose dey reason".
"no be lie... Anyway sha, me still dey here. I no fit go Lagos, besides Lagos too far and money no dey, my pocket be like dried well, everywhere zaba" I said.

The strike was actually unexpected, no one predicted such event could ever happen until now, and the worst part was that we were so close to leaving the university and becoming young graduates and quite frankly, exam was actually just a few weeks from here.

"Mayson, I wan dey go house. I don dey H" I said, as I felt my tummy vibrating aloud like Nokia 3310.
"E no matter nah, you no go like kush?" He asked
"Baba, on top this my condition. You no like me o" I said, while trying to force my left leg into my timberland shoe. "I don dey move o".
"I go bell you later na" he said, as he escorted me to the gate.

As I walked through poultry road, I could see students in mass, carrying their bags and baggage's as if there was to be another reoccurrence of the events which took place in 1966. Bikes where moving to and fro, carrying students with huge luggage's.
While I was walking through the narrow path towards my hostel, I heard my phone ring. It was Thompson, my old friend and colleague.

Me: Fela how far na
Thompson: I dey, Wetin-Dey sup for your side?
Me: Mehn, nothing much. I even dey go my hostel, hungry dey wire me.
Thompson: As for me, me don gbaga o. Me and Smart done dey move comot for this area as I dey speak.
Me: Una wan leave me for this town abi, no be so o
Thompson: Na Benin here we dey go na. Na backyard.
Me: No wahala o.

After our conversation, I got into my room, laid on my bed, and I began to devise means of getting food to eat.

"mehn, food don finish for house. I am dead. Like I am so fuxked up right now. I for go Doris house but I no know if she go dey house. Mary for don move, that one no dey hear anything holiday. Mm, Juliet, Juliet, Juliet...." I thought deeply. " mehn, make I call her?... No no no. I no wan fall my hand. Oboy afternoon don dey reach o, make man pikin no go faint o.... I gast summon courage, ... I go bell am".

Juliet was actually my ex, I still had feelings for her, but going to meet her to cook for me, didn't sound pleasant to me. Nah, it sure didnt
But I summoned courage and I dialed her number, only for me to hear... "the Mtn number you have dialed is switched off, please try again later".

I laid back on my bed, counting the ceiling... "1,2,3. 3*4,". I completely had no choice. While counting, I prayed silently.

"Baba God, good afternoon. Your boy don still come o, your boy dey H o. As I dey here so, Baba, I never chop since yesterday afternoon o. Baba, I never ready to die o. Na beg I dey beg o. Baba, I know say you don answer me, because you no dey fail. Thank you Jesus. Amen".

I took a sachet of water, lying very close to me and squeezed the entire content into my mouth, my belly became filled to the brim.
Minutes later, I heard my phone ring, I checked the callers ID, "Mayson DOC" was inscribed on my phone screen.

Me: Baba, how far
Mayson: You dey do anything for house?
Me: Nooo, I just dey.
Mayson: Ok, show my side.
Me: No probs

About 10 mins later, I was at Maysons crib. He had a packet of trams with him. He stretched it towards me.

Mayson: How far dey with this one.
Me: ....
Mayson: Temy, wetin dey sup?
Me: I dey H.
Mayson: You never still cha?
Me: Noo
Mayson: And me dey comot this town ryt now.
Me: You too still wan still leave me for this town too? Why na. My own done finish.
