The phone can be used the way it came from the factory.
I haven't flashed any ROM since I got mine and i don't intend to.
The only thing is you can download and install updates when they are released if you wish. Xiaomi releases updates frequently

Finally got hold of this Xiaomi note 4x today. Order placed by EMAMINAJ on 7th Sept, arrived here in lagos on the 22nd Sept. From client to best of friend. Abeg, the guy ova loyal. I can vouch for him anyday anytime. Funniest thing i culdnt bliv, he added his own little penny to make the order because i was almst discouraged at the mention of the brand name 'sha-ao-mi. Still on charging, would soon start disturbing you fellow xiaomites on how to explore the best of this phone. Emaminaj, I owe you all my trust. One love!!!

Once the phone is shipped with official global Rom, no need to flash or change rom. you might "want" to update if you're notified and reviews shine green light on it. The updates might not be a need if you're okay with your present rom version. It's easy and adventurous really.
You can buy and use, just like every "other" phone u and i know . But whereas the other ones won't receive updates before they crash or you get tired of dem,you'll receive updates notification(s) on Xiaomi which you might choose to ignore once the present version meets your demands.
Bottomline, once seller ships with an official global Rom, u r cool.
