No bride price was paid, how can he claim the child? Is only you can help him claim the child if u want otherwise cut all communications with him . He is not legally married to u on what bases is he claiming the child. maybe as a sperm donor.

Guess if u do approach the court as single parent ie the biological father despite being aware of the child did not take any steps to cater for the child in any way whatsoever (upkeep, hospital bills , school fees etc)

There are some factors that have to be considered here. The court will weigh the financial status between both of you, both parties mental status and some other factors too. But above all the child's needs and consideration comes first and overrides that of both parties. Since she is still a small girl you have a upper hand as the mother. Though I can't give further advice until I know the real story and must hear from the other party too (That is the father of the child).
But all the same keep the hope alive...You stand a better chance because she is a female child who is still very little coupled with the complaints you've given about him which I hope is true.

adopting the child is a no option. The lady shouldn't be scared of the unnecessary, definitely the man will come for the child and there is no Nigerian police that has the power to arrest him for that.

she should discuss with a lawyer so they can advise her legally. that is the only way I feel this can be resolved.

You will need to engage a family lawyer who will assist to gain sole custody of the child from the law court. It will involve both parents meeting in court in other to exercise right of fair hearing and the judge will rule accordingly based on evidence and testimony presented. All the best.

Traditionally, in most customs, the child of an unmarried woman belongs to her father.
Nonetheless, in any matter relating to the guardianship and custody o children the interest and welfare of the child shall be the first and paramount consideration.
Go to Court. (Customary Court, or Family Division of the High Court) Prove that u can take better care of the child and that the respondent is irresponsible and wayward. The younger the child, the easier for you. Msg me if you have further problems. Good luck

a mother can deny a baby daddy custody if she can convince the court that the father of the child is a no gooder and might influence the child negatively, especially a girl child. It does have its own challenge(s) tho, the child may eventually want to meet his biological father sometime in the future no matter how bad he seems, for clarity and closure. Marrying a great guy who ll love your daughter as his can also help strengthen your case in court. Finally, everything is possible with prayers. Wish Op luck tho

In my tradition, u have no business with any child born out of wedlock. The father of the girl claims the child.
