@ organicfoods. Great great job. New to nairaland but I've been following you and Pavore9. We need more people like you around. I noticed you planted tomatoes and peppers vertically as in on the sides of the sack. I didn't see a progress on that in the threads. I'm of the opinion that it would be better to plant the tomatoes and peppers atop the bag and trellis or cage them, as when the begin to bear fruit they will get to heavy and break off. and they won't do very well growing on the ground. I think there will also be too much crowding if grown on the sides, and crowding needs to be avoided to reduce or prevent disease.
You are very right. I didn't give further report on it because I changed location of the farm and during transit, I lost them...Then again i move to another project. My opinion of vertical farming using tomatoes will consume a lot of resource and efforts, I will prefer lettuces and other exotic leafy vegetables to grown in them!

This is the sack that takes up to 100 plants. The soil is changed after every 7 months. It needs watering thrice a week and each sack requires a total of 20 litres of water weekly.

Please how can I get this sack in Nigeria? Leave your email so I can contact you there. Thanks.

Hi organicfoods, forgive me for calling you out.

Got one or two questions that I hope you can help out with.

i) what's the function of the pipe in the image shown?

ii) Can the fish pond waste be used in the cultivation of watermelon?

The pipe is filled with stones to create a column for aeration and water in take. Waste water from ponds contain excellent nutrients for plants.

One more question as regards this, it should be used during land preparation right?

Getting millions of idle youths engaged is no rocket science. I asked some where in one of my posts why Ogun State is not cashing in fortune from Lagosians who spends billions of Naira daily on food despite the fact they are next door neighbours and 5 times the size of Lagos State but just serving as an entry point for trailers of foodstuff from the North?

That is why am so against the purported N5,000 monthly for the unemployed youth as it adds no real value to their lives. Rather than give 1,000 youths N5,000 each which sums up N5m. It should be used to get them resource persons to train them on vertical sack farming, vermiculture, greenhouse construction and post harvest storage where there is no electricity, all these will take only 2 weeks to learn. These idle youths will transform to employers of labour, government will collect taxes from the enterprises they would set up and the ripple effect continues!

2 years later and no one is even talking about the N5,000 again cheesy grin

But this your idea is valid o. If I had N5m I could start an institute and while the kids are learning how to farm, I can sell the produce and use it to reinvest in their farms with a percentage of their profit coming to me

And recycle the idea

What do you think?

It is a bankable concept as the ripple effect will be high impact. There's so much opportunities untapped in Nigeria. Take for instance, Ogun State if driven by vision can be in a prime position to supply Lagos with at least 100,000 litres of pasteurized milk daily packaged in 50cl satchet as we have with the pure water as that is how it is also packed in Kenya alongside getting it from the dispensing machine. This is very possible utilizing zero grazing.

Vertical sack farming is one of the very practical and low-cost set up that can easily empower many unengaged hands.

Having been disvirgined into vertical farming by Pavore9 thread and YouTube links on the subject, I must confess that it's the most educative initiative that can transform farming from a jungle activities to urban garden that can grow commercial food crop with immense profits and fun.

So I took the bulls by the horn to experiment with the idea.

1. I want to plant Sweet pepper and tomatoes. Technisem seem to have a good reputation. So I will be using their seeds

2. You wonder how I will get my vertical sack? From the popular Oja Oba Ibadan...from what I saw from the video, I should be able to find my choice. I intend to sew a black polythene inside the bag and perforate it accordingly for my plant. (I will explain why I am using black nylon lining inside my bag.

Panther 17 f1 tomatoes hybrid and the Nikita F1 sweet pepper hybrid seeds I bought today

I chose at random.

Thanks a million for the video.
I just watched it with my wife and we are inspired!

Panther Tomato seedlings. I counted them all... Guess what! 376 seeds I got. I am expecting at least 60% success rate...worst scenario 200 healthy plants.

Though old thread, but still believe i can still get response. I got this same seed variety (F1 PANTHER 17) from Technisem. How was the experience planting this, tje yield? Just backyard garden though. Thanks
