I am not sure what the answer to this is.

Nice write up. I have a few questions. If i land in Toronto because i have some engagements, but ultimately bound to live and work in Alberta... is it ok to wait till i get to Alberta before registering for things like SIN, Health, bank accounts et al?

Kindly advise.

You can get your SIN in Toronto, it is a Federal reference number and is valid all over the country. You can also open your bank accounts in Toronto or any other city, you are free to operate your account from anywhere. For health care, you will need to wait till you get to your destination province of Alberta where you will get instant cover. Hope this answers your questions.

@pauloverdi welcome to the land of the maple leaf.

@wura27 and yooku, well i don't know exactly how to answer the question....but it all depends on your personality....In my case, I only informed my close family (not extended) and close friends as well which are few in number. Everyone else found out as time went on by "word of mouth" because people always talk. I've kept in touch with my close circle but consciously tuned off from quite a number of people because honestly, relocating is tasking mentally and emotionally and it is important to stay positive and direct your energy towards building a new life and trying to pull on so many strings back home while doing that can be a bit of a struggle. However, we all have different personalities....so for some people, they would draw their strength from keeping all of their social ties going.....only hindrance to that would be time difference. So, in a nutshell, do what works for you.

@wura27 if you are Alberta bound then there is nothing to worry about. They would accept your expired driver's license as long as it is the original one and expired less than 2yrs ago (i stand corrected about the duration though).

@impish, school starts at age 5 in Alberta as well for kindergarten.

@DB14, unless you intend to pay for medical care for child birth, then you should land in either Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba. Alberta gives you health care insurance immediately. Sask and Manitoba give new immigrants within 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info. Did you have to get FRSC letter as well? learnt it's compulsory for Ontario.

Welcome to Canada! You can get your health card registration done at any Service Ontario location near you, https://www.ontario.ca/page/serviceontario-locations-hours-and-contact

Drivers licence can be obtained at any Drive Test centre in Ontario, https://drivetest.ca/find-a-drive-test-centre/alphabetical_list.html?language_id=1

Do let us know if you need any other info.

Hi, FRSC letter is not compulsory in Ontario please. I came with just my Nigerian Driving licence showing that I have over 3 years driving experience. If however you need to get the FRSC experience letter, the format and experiences have been shared in the previous pages. Just scroll backwards or search the thread.

Thanks for the clarification. This is what was said at the orientation by IOM. I already have the format but when this was mentioned with specifics for Ontario, decided to be sure its also needed for Alberta since it varies across province.

Thank you so so much for your response. U r right, there are many supposed friends who are actually monitoring spirits.... I'd just stick to my inner caucus.

I'm relieved to know I don't have to renew my license.

Thanks and take care

Hi fabdee.

We intend moving to Alberta but I've always had issues with sending PMs. They don't deliver. Mind posting your email address? Or you could send me a mail at bukolajayi@yahoo.com. I would like to be part of the whatsapp group. Cheers.

6 months! I'd have been so worried, thinking that the worst has happened. I salute your patience. Those 23 days seemed like the longest in my life.

But wait oh, Accra wants to take more days to stamp a passport than it took CIC to verify application and issue PPR. Wonders shall never end.

fabdee:
23days to get PPR? Now i feel you. If you had waited for 6months like me, by now PATIENCE go be your middle name grin . Dont worry your PUM is a click away. Cheers!
