nice write-up man, ph is not smiling for the gullible oh, Dem don collect me for hold up there before . seriously I had to negotiate for thm to forgo my phone. Google maps have proven to be the best, although if u really want to see their flaws try travelling from imane I'm kogi state to anywhere in the west or south, sometimes u will find that the suggested road on Google map either hasn't been in use for like a century or it has been closed. they need to update it or something. mehn na xo I take find myself almost entering bush @ 10pm one fateful Sunday...... wasn't funny @ all. thankfully as people deserted the road, robbers also did the same

what I do now..... when plying a new route, I just join a convoy of Toyota hiace buses while using my map as confirmation, so if I see two roads ahead I tactfully check maps and confirm which route driver is taking. before u enter warri instead of bayelsa

Shebi I talk am! I no de near that place till further notice cheesy

I'm planning on lagos- abuja in a few days with the help of Google map. Are u saying it won't be reliable cos I will surely pass kogi. Or should I respect myself and go to God is good and follow the bus going to abuja behind.

If you want to follow the commercial route then don't input lagos abuja
instead
input lagos - and all the major cities that you will pass through to abuja
any other system will give you a route the computer judges as best and not the route used by the rest

very bad roads. Wasn't funny when coming. And I wouldn't want to go through that route again. I don't mind a longer one

OK, thanks. Google map takes me thru Benin. But the route God is good took while coming was nothing close to Benin. And the road is horrible.

God is good and most transport companies follow Lagos-Ibadan- Akure-Okene - lokoja - ABJ route, which i think is shorter but the benin route is better, as-in less bad road

NB It's over 2 years i followed both routes..The roads might have gotten worse

very succinct. Thanks. My map takes me thru shagamu/benin/auchi/okene/lokoja/abuja. I wish to go this route. God is good took the akure the route and the road was horrible. At last made the journey longer.

Actually I take the route you wanna use....it looks longer but in the final analysis it is not, if you know how to put your foot down when it matters, you will arrive sooner

My point was, Google Maps will never tell you the commercial route

I still wonder though the attraction of the commercial route given how bad the roads have become

u r just in point, sometimes those public drivers take that "longer route" with bad roads'' for a very very subtle sensible and sensitive reason, if u wanna find out y...... try the other shorter route.

my two cents tho....

men of the other world?

But I have taken it severally without issues

I have also seen the news of attacks on that route severally

But it seems that it tends to happen at night or very early in the morning

The commercial route is not much better... they tend to love to attack somewhere after Akure but before Okene close to Akoko Edo if memory serves me right

I can authoritatively tell you that driving from lagos to akure, via ibadan is slower. better go via ore and then back to akure. Even google maps will tell you it is 23mins faster to go via ore to lagos from akure. But as for road conditions VS distance travelled, theres a group of people who prefer the Lagos - Ibadan - Ilesha - Efon Alaye - Aramoko - Ijero - Ifaki - Oye - Omuo - Kabba - Obajana - Lokoja - Abuj. That way you will have to factor in ibadan and ilesha.

I have not travelled to the north in over 3years now by road, so im very rusty. But iv don that trip over 100 times in my over 12years living there. My usual route, is the ibadan - ife- ilesha-owo-akure-okene-lokoja route. Okene is really messed up now at 1 point, I noticed this when I passed okene a few months ago when coming from auchi.

Traveling long distance journey is fun, however the high rate of armed robbery and bad roads will make one think twice.
I once travelled to Choba, PH back in 2011 from Sagam using BlackBerry Map on Bold2, it was very effective and accurate, it tells me my exact speed.
There was a time I got tired of glancing through the phone screen and decided to follow one hiace bus delivering turkey to PH (I got familiar with the bus driver at a police check point).. Men after following the bus for about 20mins I couldn't keep up with him any longer I just had to free him.. I was doing 150km/h and this man still gave me a great gap, I free am, I can't come and die. That's how I continued using my map

Magicfingers009, thanks for the description.

I'd be driving from PH to Abuja by January. I would also be banking greatly on Google map. I'd be using a 1999 Volkswagen Passat wagon.

Is the map this reliable? Any extra word for me, please?

Thanks.

With this, I officially rest my worries. I just updated the app. When I return to PH (currently in Abuja), I'd ensure the car is in order. Come January, I'd hit the road.

My other worry is, the said vehicle is not in my name. It's in my brother's. Hope this wouldn't be an issue with the police? Do I need a Change of Ownership document? Any idea?

Again, thank you.

omo this calls for demeanor attention...

and don't always bank on an app 100 percent....

it cannot still show whether there is a robbery ahead, riot ahead, or areas with little or no GPS / network coverage.... so being ahead of the game requires that u know all these

but most of its routes are updated!

lemme bring in the big guns for u....

cc thebigkendo , Gazuzz, diportivo, heavenlybang, nwanenni, captainking, banky3w and the host of others to great to mention pattybf also and timifakay

PS u need to draft your route, long distance journeys are not jokes for starters ..... u need to have all the info u need besides map....
