Sunshine Stars, Tornadoes take lead into Aiteo Cup return leg

By George Akpayen

Sunshine Stars and Niger Tornadoes gave themselves good headstarts in their bid to reach the final of the Aiteo Cup this year with victories in the first leg matches of the semi-final matches on Saturday.

In all Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) semi-finals, Sunshine Stars edged Akwa United 1-0 at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode while Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah blew a two-goal lead to lose 2-4 to Tornadoes at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja.

FC Ifeanyiubah regarded as favourites in their match-up with Tornadoes made that rating count just seven minutes into the game when Patrick Ikeokwu finished off a sloppy defending by the home team to give the Anambra Warriors a goal lead.

Tornadoes struggled to open up FC Ifeanyiubah at the back as the away side looked good value for their lead at the break.

Seven minutes into the restart, the Cup holders extended their lead to two-nil from King Osanga's well-struck free kick after Godwin Obaje was fouled near Tornadoes' box.

With a two-goal cushion and game past the 60-minute mark, the Aiteo Cup champions looked good to be tipped for the showpiece game despite having a second leg to play at their FC Ifeanyiubah Stadium in Nnewi next Wednesday week.

The introduction of Rabiu Sani Mohammed by Tornadoes head coach Abubakar Bala galvanized one of the comebacks in the history of the Cup competitions. Rabiu started it all when he scored on 63 minutes after benefitting from FC Ifeanyiubah's poor defending.

Two minutes later, Ibrahim Babawo headed in the goal that evened the scoreline for Tornadoes at 2-2 to set the cat among the pigeons for their opponents.

The comeback for Tornadoes then got completed in the last 15 minutes of the game. Rabiu's pace and tricky put FC Ifeanyiubah on the back foot most of the time and the winger deservedly got his second goal of the game on 75 minutes to give his team the lead for the first time.

The collapse continued for FC Ifeanyiubah into the final 10 minutes. Their Ivorian goalkeeper Idrissa Bamba despite a brave save to keep the Anambra Warriors one goal behind, could not stop Peter Momoh from turning the rebound for Tornadoes to run out 4-2 winners.

A first half goal in the other semi-finals ensured Sunshine Stars will take a slim lead to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo against 2015 Aiteo Cup champions Akwa United.

Ajibola Otegbeye continued his good scoring form for Sunshine Stars by netting the winner. He has now scored three goals in his last two Cup matches.

The second leg matches will take place next Wednesday week.

If I hear legend, legend ko,star lager beer ni,do u think staying at a club for so long means u re automatically a legend?,maybe u shld tell me a match where Mikel single handedly won or rescued the team, wen d chips were down.

Mikel showed d signs of been a future legend during d U-20 world cup in 2005,but immediately mourinho changed his style of play and wc himself refused to improve except to give balance to his team wyle in play

Mikel had never done anything extraordinary to be termed a LEGEND, both country and club, quote me anywhere...he was only gud at playing to instructions

If u want to knw legend, mention players dt rescued d team when d chips were down, mention players like messi,c.ronaldo,Ronaldo,Zidane,Ronaldinho,Maldini,Lampard,J.terry and so on...these re legend dt rescued deir teams both clubs and countries when all seems impossible on d pitch of play

if I am right, I believe it was a stupid own goal against Barcelona in a friendly, that made Celtic fans call for his head. He dropped to lower team, Hibernian, had several MOTM awards if i'm not mistaking and help them to the top tier. Since then he's been a regular. Did Ambrose ever show a loss of form? I stand to be corrected.

Or mabye we should consider a couple of our CB's from WAFU(?).

more over Rogers, does not believe in him, and does not even know him,

ask his former coach, who took him to the second tie, wia he help them back on top, EFE is a top defender, if you know how to use hin

Let me add, just today Hibernian held Scottish powerhouse Celtic to a 2-2 draw AWAY.

Kog45:
WAFU CB?watching d final Eze let me down after Adeleye got injured,so no go area.

Ambrose getting MOTM in lower Scottish league not a big deal and also a regular in Hilbernia don't fancy me.

I don't reckon with Scottish league,so i don't see his form in d league as a way for national recall.

My concerns is Awaziem making d grade and Omeruo getting his fitness back.

Some people don't just like to hear Mikel at all... It's well o... Atleast he Stil proving you people wrong...
If you don't like him just ignore him and stop talking about him instead of bringing him down..

Mikel deserve alot of respect... He's the must behave player at this era... You can take it to bank...

When the so called legends are choosing games to play for Nigeria during 2006 world cup qualifiers and they ain't t taking responsibility... Mikel is their taking responsibility both on and outside the pitch...

While some of the so called legend are forming maffians in the team... Mikel is forming team spirit...

His sportsmanship is topnotch...

If you don't like him don't talk about him...

If you talk about him that means you are jealous of him...

grin
all this kain assumptions sef... So now i hate mikel because i dont share your view..
FYI.. I moved from arsenal and started supporting chelsea because of Mikel so wah would your next argument be??
I started hating on him because he moved to china??

Is Gareth Bale a madrid legend?

False equivalency...

Mikel was a regular player in the most successful period in Chelsea's history.. Where they won their only champions league trophy.

Real Madrid has legends by the truckloads because they have been successful for several decades. It is the most successful club in history.

Mikel is a bigger legend for Chelsea than Bale is for Madrid. Just because of the stature of both clubs.

Why do u keep bringing up Taiye Taiwo? Oya when was his last game with the super eagles? Efe Ambrose was a regular until Rohr came around and that was because he had a long spell without playing at celtic. Him and Leon Balogun were forming a strong partnership, remember they were the pair that we used to beat Cameroon 3 nil under Oliseh. Now that he is actually playing week in week out on a good team I don't see why he should not be considered when all u have in mind is Omeruo.
Oh Taiye Taiwo just to butress my point,I w be d last person to agitate for Taiwo return but i disagreed with your assertion that long absence of a player in d national team w determine his recall.

Hope u remember Mike Emenalo,he played last for Eagles in 1986 and made US 94 at d last minutes displacing Nduka Ugbade as a back up for Ben Iroha.

Yes i have Omeruo in mind coz he has done it before as CB more than Ambrose as CB in Eagles colour and already part of d team,i believe with little shake up in d league, him and Awaziem should able to complement Leo and Ekong unless we discovered a rear gem as CB.

no offence but does this make sense to you?

Bale has been a regular for the first madrid team to win back-to-back Champions league trophies and the only team to win 3 champions league trophies in 4 years, how is that not the most succesful period in Madrid's history(bar the 1950 period)?

My man i don't argue to win but to learn and share ideas.Mind u have been in this game since 1980 so it always take a wise ones to understand my points or views

The word legend may connote different meaning to two of us but from my own point of view when some one achieve what nobody has ever achieve,i always a refer to such fellow as a special being and i can term him a legend and to me Di Matteo is a legendary coach Chelsea w never forget,to u he may mean nothing, that's your view which i must respect.

Efe has not been away from the team for such a long time. At least not long enough for u to put him in the same breath as Taiye who stopped getting invites about 4 or 5 coaches ago. All I know is that if Efe continues in this vain of form it would be very hard for any coach not to select him.
