I do not dream the way most people do. I go to bed, have these pictures in my head, fully aware it's not real. I hear the voices of people around me, leaves me wondering if I am half awake and asleep, simultaneously.

I think I understand what he is trying to say.
One cannot fully understand a concept with understanding the opposite concept.
For example, you would never be able to discern what darkness is all about if you have never experienced light, and vice versa.
This idea can be applied to life and death, two opposite concepts.
One can easily argue that it is impossible for you to know what death is if you haven't experienced life, similarly, it is impossible to appreciate the beauty of life, if you have never experienced or seen death.

So these two opposite concepts are somewhat linked together and complement each other.
