Mickael2: It can happen but it is not regular. Shields are often overlooked. Please, Essien played box to box a lot. Same with Lampard. Apart from Canavarro, it is a rear occurrence. Shield are overlooked. |

Very true. I read a while back that the holding midfielder role is the MOST important role but players playing that role can be easily unnoticed. TheGoodJoe: 3 Likes 1 Share |

Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 10:19pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
Joebie: Exactly. Coupled with the fact that Mikel played that Key role for so long at Chelsea during a domestic dominating period and trophy-filled era. That was amazing. Then doing great in the Semi-finals and Finals of the Champions League. Then AFCON. With repeated man to match performances. This should not even be a debate. 4 Likes |

It hurts the SlObi crew that took repeated Jabs at Mikel that they were dissing a Legend of the game of football. 2 Likes

TheGoodJoe: ok so how many times has Mikel been shortlisted in the....50man list for the Fifa World Best player? Atleast at that stage a lot of 'shields' are seen. Even Keita made it in once. Busquets is a mainstay, Ramos is there just about every year and so many other defensive players. Back to the question, did Mikel make that list after his 'legendary' contributions in 2012? |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 10:25pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
Now you are talking. That's why I've been canvassing for Joel Obi. That partnership will be deadly. Joel has the pace that Mikel don't have. But pace is not everything. Okocha wasn't fast but he had many other qualities that could cover for it. neighy: 4 Likes |

Mickael2: Shields are underrated and overlooked a lot. Ramos goes front during Corners while others shield. I think until Gus Hiddink's second return, Mikel was among the most popular and trusted by the managers to shield even during corners. That is why he was overlooked but key. Gerrit? 1 Like |

I want to think that Mikel was more a holding defensive midfielder -- specialized defensive midfielder. Thats the aspect I think we are talking about. There are not many players that play that role. Makalele will be a good example. Mickael2: 1 Like |

Joebie:lol.. Compared to mikel okocha was very fast and very skillful so he could easily take out defenders ... And mikel has shielding the ball to cover for it |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Mickael2(m): 10:33pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
Joebie: that defines precisely what Busquets does for Barcelona but that hasn't prevented him from being nominated for the accolades. Ok, during his best patch was Mikel ever included in the FIFA best XI? Atleast there is always a DMF there, he has never even been nominated for that one as well |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 10:34pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
Mickael2: Kroos has Casemiro today behind him. Even at Bayern, he had shields behind him. Busquets plays in one of the most offensive sides for club and country in the history of the game. Matic and Kante do not have the Longevity yet. Matic has come under heavy criticism a lot of causing the team problems. So making list of FIFA is not a stamp of Legendary. The point is clear but you still want to argue. |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 10:36pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
Mickael2: Playing a key role for Chelsea for a long time. Making impacts in major tourneys. FIFA list can not erase it. The truth is clear. |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 10:36pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
dude.. A holding defensive midfielder don't need speed.. That's the role he played at Chelsea. I don't know where you are heading with your sarcasm. Okocha was not very fast. Yes he did have that sudden burst going forward sometimes. neighy: 1 Like |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Mickael2(m): 10:37pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
TheGoodJoe: when did Casemiro start playing for Madrid? And Kroos was the Dmf all along, even when they won the UCL. Ok I don't understand how this explains your point. I said Busquets and Kroos have been nominated for the FWBP despite playing as the defensive shields for their teams but Mikel hasn't even been nominated for the FIFA XI, why is that if he is that much of a legend? |

Mickael2: Kroos was not shield. He played the role in some games but that was not his regular role. If I am correct, Kroos even played in front of Alonso. Ha. |

neighy: He can't just add it Noni... I'm Very sure he would have tried it too... Rather than killing himself on things he doesn't have... Then he focus on his strength which are: Dribbling Passing Concentration That's his selling port. And he is not doing bad.. Seriously... You can't have it all and we need to respect that... Mikel is a great guy... Nigeria need him more than he needs Nigeria... |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Mickael2(m): 10:41pm On Sep 30, 2017 |
TheGoodJoe: Okocha is fast as simple as that. Is it thesame Okocha? Maybe you need to watch his highlights for Bolton again, if you see the speed he uses to hit teams on the counter you will not say what you just said. Maybe you can only recall his last years as a footballer, there is no shame in that, the human brain can be funny sometimes |
