Today something happened that makes me speechless. There is one guy that bought a used phone from somebody in his street. He was tracked all the way from ogun state and picked up in his shop here in lagos.

According to the police, the phone was a stolen phone and the owner was kidnapped and ransom of 2 million was collected from him.

The reason i brought the story here. So the gurus in the house can help us that normally buy used phone. What is the first thing to do if we buy a used phone in case the phone was a stolen phone. Am not a thief ooo am only saying this for prevention purpose in case if we don't know that the phone was a stolen phone. As we all know all hands are not equal. If all of us can acquire what we want, I don't think anyone will want to buy used phone.

Give it to computer engineer gurus, they will remove the tracker if there is any.

My friend was a victim to, he bought a phone not knowing the owner installed a tracker, he was picked up through his friend that calls him regularly while using the phone. The whole stuff cost him over 200k before SARS left him after providing the seller.

Buy from a trusted source. Used phones are sold all over the world just like any other used item. Source of purchase is the key.

Phone tracking comes into two types. Third party apps downloaded by users themselves and the other one is inbuilt by the phone manufacturers.

I won't go into details but if you see a sweet phone and bought it 2nd hand genuinely , it's not a crime, it's done all over the world by even rich people. The fact is Nigeria police are lazy, opportunistic dirty skanks who are too lazy to do investigation but will always choose to look for the easiest way out.

*3rd party apps can be gotten rid off my formatting or rooting using custom ROM.

But if you cannot do this, always check your credit, any unexplained SMS reduction or shortages in your credit should ring the alarm bells as your phone could be sending coded SMS containing your number to a pre-programmed phone.

* If your GPS location settings comes up when you didn't prompt it directly or use an app to activate it, then be weary as some phones inbuilt security uses the GPS to track a missing phone.

* Go to your internet data usage and see which apss are taking up your data. You may be surprised to see unknown / hidden apps making use of your data too.

These are some signs your phone is being tracked.

It's the phone factory set IMEI number that is used for tracking across any network not SIM card or phone number.

IMEI can be changed and remote blocked if you know what's up. I don't support crime so I cannot teach openly how to completely change identity of any phone.

if the owner has the IMEI Number intact somewhere, forget it whether you go to to London interpol will bring you down to naija here. so advice: if you want easy tracking of your phone write the IMEI number where you can easily retrieve it to punish the phone thiefs, again if you get a used phone just get receipt you are covered!

Not all phones IMEI can be altered unless you work for some high-tech company
or secret service in which case you don't even need the stolen phone.

Brother they do change IMEI number, my tight guy has done it on one iPhone like that but it will cost you few thousands so IMEI can be changed also. Unless you buy phones like "Vertu or Thuraya", that one na telecom or mast itself and its not also traceable (correct me if I'm wrong)

The only way to aviod the matter from being complicated is asking for receipt when you buy a phone..

the receipt shows evidence of payment and ownership.
if at all the person is arrested, then the best thing to do is go to court ,since u have the receipt nothing will happen.

if you buy a stolen goods,ur case will be worse than the person that stole it cos the police believe you're the one encouraging them to do so..

Buy from an open market ...Where such items are usually sold ,and from a seller then receipt and the law will be with you ... Best just buy what your money can afford brand new and be done

All phones has IMEI number, once you can remember this number you can track your phone, that is why people that buy expensive phones store this number in remote areas and once phone gets missing they get the Humber and start tracking , worst with Apple devices once the edge ices is clouded it becomes easy to track
Re: Fate Of Those That Buy Used Phones by ABEngine(m): 5:32pm On Oct 02, 2017
Just like a a NL'der mentioned earlier, there is no hack to this. I will rather purchase a minimum budget phone than post bail of its multiples.

Moreover, a duly signed reciept won't exonerate one from the embarrassments that comes with discovering the item was a proceed of crime, the police will still demand "something" after some humiliation.

You are hereby warned.
Re: Fate Of Those That Buy Used Phones by Bookiemart01(f): 5:37pm On Oct 02, 2017
War thing to do is to stop looking for cheap phones. Buy funds in the normal price range. People should stop buying phones that worth 130k for 60k,they could be stolen.

The thing can be tracked through the network; which will discover the new sim that has been exchanged on the phone.

anythm u want to buy used phone, ask for receipt from d seller but if he doesnt has, tell him to do ds 4 . it goes lyk ds ;ask for his national identity card e.g national id car, inec card e.t.c then staple it nd urz to sheet of paper. d seller one will b @ top of dt paper while d buyer one will b very close to down. then, d seller will write this beneath his identity card ; I, "NAME OF THE SELLER" d owner of d above identity sold "NAME OF THE PHONE" with imei "IMEI OF THE PHONE" to "NAME OF THE BUYER" on "DATE" at "LOCATION" at the rate of "PRICE" nd d buyer too will write d same thg as above but changing d following "sold" to "bought" , "to" to "from","name of the buyer" to "name of d seller". then both party will sign nd put their numb beneath their signature.....then made d photocopy,d buyer will keep original while d seller will go with photocopied
what about if you are buying from olx?
