NADDC Engages BMW, Ford, VW, Nissan & Others Towards Local Production In Nigeria by AutoReportNG: 5:24pm On Oct 05, 2017 |
The Director-General of NADDC, Jelani Aliyu, MFR, has led a delegation to South Africa where they met and had discussions with a coalition of a number of the world's major Automotive OEMs, Original Equipment Manufacturers. The companies included BMW, Nissan, Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota and BAW. Discussions centered on NADDC's committment and strategy on supporting these multi-national companies to come into Nigeria and manufacture their state-of-the art vehicles as per world standards. This would provide direct and indirect employment and exponential economic multiplier effects. The NADDC delegation included the Director-General, Jelani Aliyu, Director Policy and Planning, Luqman Mamudu, Special Advisor to the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Emeka Ifezulike and Special Advisor to the DG NADDC, Sani Musa. Ford and Nissan already have production operations in Nigeria. Moving on, NADDC's objective for the two companies is to support them in exponentially increasing their production capacity, and also in providing more of their model range offerings at various price points, from low cost entry levels to premium configurations. Ford produces the Ranger at their plant in Ikeja, Lagos, a mid-size pick-up with high capabilites and functionality. There are three global mega-trends in the automotive industry: 1) the electrification of vehicles, 2) vehicle autonomy, and 3) ride sharing. The NADDC discussions with the automotive manufacturers touched on these three trends, especially the electrification of vehicles. With counties such as the United Kingdom and France setting out targets to phase out the sale of petrol and diesel powered vehicles, Nigeria must not be left behind, and NADDC is strategizing the development of an Electric Vehicles Policy to support the adoption of that technology in the country. Although challenges exist in general power availability in the country, three important enabling factors must be acknowledged: 1) the Nigerian Federal Government has now allowed the establishment of private sector driven modular power generation, 2) Nigeria is blessed with high solar insolation that must be harnessed, and 3) NADDC is now committed to collaborating with developers of automotive relavant sustainable energy solutions from both within Nigeria and without. The delegation also visited an Automotive Industrial Park in Rosslyn, there in South Africa, in lieu of the proposed NADDC Automotive Industrial Park for Nnewi. NADDC is also proposing two other parks, one in Kaduna and the other in Oshogbo. NADDC's committment is to work with all credible and progressive stakeholders in enabling the Nigerian automotive sector leapfrog into a comprehensive advanced ecosystem populated with sustainable, energy efficient and inherently safe vehicles and transportation solutions. This recent NADDC engagement with world leading automotive companies is a solid strategy towards having their most modern models produced and available in Nigeria. You are getting where? Attracting new automotive assembly/manufacturing plants, as well as reviving comatose ones is brilliant, though I see this as putting the cart before the horse. There is nothing he told them there that they don't know. Most of them know Nigeria is an investment haven _but to attract such FDI, several things should be put in place. Investors are most likely to channel their funds into a system where policies are stable. Where there is commitment to agreements _that's excluding other factors that makes business thrive. The absence of the aforementioned (as is the case in Nigeria) is just a catalyst for impeded growth in the target sector. They should fix Nigeria, the stumbling block isn't really lack of finance/financiers _but lack of trust in the system. If it's so rosy, Innoson and most local businesses would do better. 21 Likes 2 Shares |

NADDC will not kill me If Innoson sells it's CKD for 5million Kia and Hyundai sell same for 8million Toyota sells theirs for 15million I just wonder how much BMW will sell its brand new 1 series not to talk of Benz C-class. Until the steel industry and power industry goes through a positive revolution it's all a mirage. Minimum wage 18k let's say the cheapest brand new car is 3million do the maths 3million / 18,000 = 166months = 13years which profit making company will drop a car on monthly repayment for such long term. Besides people who can afford such money prefer to buy low mileage tokunbo 3million for tokunbo camry muscle 2008XLE or brand new Kia picanto or Innoson umi camry all the way 22 Likes 3 Shares |

How do this people think? How is the purchasing power in Nigeria? Where is the power supply or good security to support new investment? You dont go and chase investors, you keep your house in order and investors come. Companies are closing down, credit houses are giving a red flag on Nigeria, where do you think these investors will get money to invest I came to realized that Nigeria is one of the few countries where buyers must pay full value before taking home a brand new car and that is why brand new cars are mostly for government officials. Until we develop a system of car financing, citizens will still find it difficult to get brand new cars and as such, there will still be no market for these would be investors. We need a solid database to support credit financing and high employment rate to boost demand for brand new cars. Finally, we need to restructure to boost productivity and eliminate the system where you get more allocation by breeding more parasites 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Crazy country with crazily reckless vision. We already have Innoson Automobile Company, what a forward thinking nation would do is to rally around Innoson, produce a cost-effective and efficient, strong and reliable savvy vehicles that will match and compete with the likes of Mercedes, Ford, Toyota, Honda etc. With a road map of 10 years, Innoson vehicles will flood the African market, and Nigeria would become an exporter of vehicles and earn meaningful foreign exchange from that. But because of our flawed foundation as a country, the north would rather kill everyone than seeing this achieved. Dangote is an indigenous company, but have spread it's tentacles beyond the shores of this country with his kinsmen support. Which way Nigeria!!! Why are we Nigerians? Why were we born into this contraption? 6 Likes 1 Share |

These people are bunch of jokes. fix your electricity, infrastructure and security first and Nations will troop in to invest in your country. China, Tiwan, US and even our neighbour, Ghana, we were better than before, didn't go about begging for FDI. They only did the needful. Fixing their electricity, infrastructure and security. No one wants to invest in an environment were their are too many uncertainties. 2 Likes |
