You mean you want to take GRE in November 2017 and have not started preparation by October? Interesting. To be brutally honest, except you are a savant in Maths and the use of English, you likely won't get your desires scores. You may PM me to get some of the materials you seek.

No advice for prospective test takers, at least you've had the experience just say something wink. By the way I think your question was answered earlier your score report should be updated on your school portal soonest. #Fall 2018 the wait is almost over. cool

My advice for propective test takers is to try and eat something (not too much food oo) just little on the morning of exam, it will allow enough glucose to flow in for the brain to look sharp, for me we had an hour and thirty minutes delay during the test, we continued from where we stopped, when the system came up again , every one was looking tired, ....prepare with Barron, magoosh, kaplan , and mahanttan ..thats all i use, i have a score of 304, waiting for the essay part, my school needs about 307 for funding, so im kind of furious about the remaining score. Thanks

Well thanks and don't mind my eager demand for advice, and that was helpful. An hour thirty minutes delay that's almost six hours if I envisage correctly. And what school is that if I may ask cheesy, I think you could talk about the delay and how it limited your overall performance. In relation to sorting for funding, I hope you get fully funded. Nothing inspires like a success story. #Fall2018

Hi.

I think I can give an hindsight to what you truly mean since I had my undergraduate degree in Statistics as well, however the advise I'd give are purely mine and is subjected to criticisms. I'd be giving anecdotes which I believe will help you also.

First, what do you truly want to do? A degree in statistics will open your eyes to many fields (supposing you're good enough) such as Data Science, Economics, Quantitative economics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Quantitative finance, and other fields that requires computing /calculations. I was once in your shoes, now I'm in a Quantitative Economics programme for my masters degree.

From the above, I believe you now know a degree in Statistics provides you with a wide range of options (provided your quantitative skills are good). However, since your question states you're only concerned about "research ", I would implore you to decide what field you want to apply "your statistics" to - from this, you can now decide the research you want to delve into. Also, get some programming skills - Learning R or Python + SAS, Minitab, Java or C++ won't hurt. In fact, I can categorically say, if you're proficient with any of these, research becomes easier as you would be faces with solving problems and where does research stem from? Problems of course!

Moreover, volunteer to analyze undergraduates projects, be closer to a lecturer in your department whom you know is smart [sic], take your thesis and internship (IT) seriously and when you're done? Write GRE and TOEFL, on your SOP state the above listed skills (provided you acquired them) and experiences; emphasize on how you believe these skills are useful in graduate school, how you believe you can succeed and how the department's requirements fits your description.

I'm sorry I can't explain further as I'm very busy (but I just got interested in you), but please "graduate with a First Class degree or a very strong 2:1". I never regretted graduating the top of my school as it had opened lots of opportunities.

I would leave the rest to my boss (Baum1) and GboyegaD. We all have similar profile (BSc. Statistics). I hope they can contribute.

P. S: Pardon my grammar errors, I don't have time to edit anything now.

Dankeschön.

You said it all. The only thing I may want to add is that while writing your SOP, do not focus only on what your studies would do for you but show how well rounded your life is. Everyone knows grad school can be very challenging so show how studying in such a program, university, city, and country at large would be of immense value to you, and also, how your life fits in. You could say the multicultural nature of the city or the cosmopolitan view of the state would make it easy for you to settle in bla, bla, bla just to show that you are not just about books.

Good morning great minds. I am happy I came across this thread. Please I need some advice and I'll appreciate any contribution.

So I would want to do my Msc but I dont want it it be in same course as my undergraduate course which is electrical engineering. I would want something general like ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT or any other. My GP is 3.74 on a scale of 5. My questions are
1. Can I still meet up with fall 2018 if I start preparations now.
2. What country might be best for me, considered Canada but didn't find much for the course I'm considering.

Please I'll appreciate answers. Thank u all

why do you want to reschedule the exams? my advice is, just go and write d test and after the test, click on cancel scores. you will automatically be granted another chance after 21days.

Thanks for your advice friend, however I'm rescheduling not out of fear but because I will not make it due to an important appointment, and if I'm to cancel my scores I will have to pay registration fee again I will rather prefer to pay the rescheduling fee

Besides, whether you report or cancel you can sit for the exam again only after 21 days. Rescheduling costs less.

US TOEFL. CANADA IELTS simply because you can use it for express entry program.

Some US schools still accept IELTS and Canada vice versa. But when you talk about preference...

Salutation erudite scholars in the building. I sincerely hope that one day I'll belong to cadre of intelligentsia such as Scholasticlala16, Dremanuel, gokuu, ponpon, Dr TimetoSmile, Dr Hopeful et al. It's painful that I'm discovering this thread very late, I'll be wrapping up my Nysc December and I desire to further my studies abroad.
Taking finance and time into consideration, I doubt if I can meet up with Fall 2018 admission deadline. I'm thinking of diverting my attention to other scholarship opportunities either in the UK or Canada that may not require GRE and maybe from there apply for 2019 fall.

This is my humble profile

Discipline ( Project Management,FUTA)

UG CGPA (4.52)

One joint publication with Project supervisor
Zero work/research experience

I need advice on next course of action.

Scholasticlala16 please be my mentor ?

How can you ask a Toad for chair when you see it is already squatting?

I am not a mentor oh. Just helping where I can.

If you are really keen on scholarships then USA, Canada and UK should be in that order.

Canada requires you to first get in touch with faculty and get a response before applying. Good luck with that.

UK, UK, UK. Well, no school will give you any substantial funding to get by there. You can try out the Commonwealth scholarship program but I think the next edition will soon be advertised against Fall of 2018. Look out for it. There are other scholarship bodies in Nigeria that sponsor strictly to UK like NLNG, NITDA, NDDC, SHELL and AGIP. But you would have to find out yourself if your course qualifies you to vie for it.

As for USA, although early bird admissions began this month some schools have varying deadlines most of which end in December (for early bird admissions) and in some schools January. On average, applications can still be made up to even March or April but then funding will be harder there - not impossible.

For obvious reasons I will recommend the USA. While you are doing your research on the schools you may want to apply to fully cognizant of the areas in your field you'd want to major on, try to contact POIs. Read their works and share your thoughts with them. Ask them if they are recruiting for their next research group. If they respond, they may ask you for standardized test scores which you'd have to take and present but the important thing is they can almost help you secure not just the admission you need but funding as well.

It won't be as simplistic as I have presented it here but that should not be a problem considering good things most times come on the path of which many will not take. But if you can focus on the glory ahead, it will be easy to suffer the "cross" and despise the momentary "shame".

Can IELTS academic be used for express entry? Isn't it General IELTS? I used to think you can't use one in place of the other.

IELTS Academic is not acceptable for Express Entry. He should choose TOEFL since he will be applying to both schools in the United States and schools in Canada. Schools in the United States have a preference for TOEFL while Canadian Universities accept both.
