Lagos – A Case Study In Growth Without Development by Naijiant: 8:02pm On Oct 11, 2017 |
Lagos has surely grown in the last six years. The place is buzzing with economic activity. There are a multitude of places looking to attract the custom of people with money. Bentleys and other luxury cars are commonplaces in areas such as Lekki, Ikoyi and VGC. But it is economic growth without development. This because despite the increase in income and output, the majority of Lagosians have not seen an improvement in their lives in terms of living standards and quality of life. Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen said: “Human development, as an approach, is concerned with what I take to be the basic development idea: namely, advancing the richness of human life, rather than the richness of the economy in which human beings live, which is only a part of it”.More: https://www.naijiant.com/articles/lagos-case-study-growth-without-development/ |

oduastates: You don't understand him Growth focuses on increase in quantity of goods, services and cash produced Development focuses on the things that make life meaningful to the citizens eg Electricity, Water, Clean Environment, Job, Loan, Education/Good Schools, Health/Good Hospitals, Food, Shelter, etc. The truth is, Lagos state should champion the opening of Eastern ports so that the pressure on her can be taken away by the new Industrial centers that will spring up in the East. My reason is because I know that Lagos state can't cater for every Non-Lagosian trooping into Lagos. 1 Like |

Lagos has the wherewithal and economic potentials to leapfrogged many advanced cities (like Durban, Cairo, Johannesburg, Dubai, London, Frankfurt, New Delhi) as the most developed city provided Restructuring, true federalism and a blend of a socialist state is embraced in Nigeria. Lagos is Nigeria's emporium and a city like Lagos has no business fearing the future, Lagosians should look like kings and queens irrespective of populations upsurge but like the op rightly surmised, Lagos is just growing bust not developing which is the noble truth. If those factors I revealed up there and the total removal of Tinubu's scraggy and itchy fingers from Lagos treasury then Lagos will fulfil its place as the future of a better Nigeria. 2 Likes |

in a nutshell Lagos is growing but Abuja is developing. Lagos is like a man whose critical mass is growing , there is increase in population, increase in buildings but the human development index fails to increase. But Abuja is like man whose critical grass is growing , there is increase in population and housing and other critical infrastruture and the human development index is growing. . Abuja eventhough in the North has seen massive out of the box thinking influenced partly by the different individuals with different party dispositions that has come to manage the day to day running of the city. Lagos is 16M while Abuja is 6M Lagos state was capital for 80 year while Abuja is capital for only 24 years. Lagos has no option than to expand toward Ogun, Abuja has na unlimited expansion options 1 Like |

And why is it Igbos pulling each other's d**ks on a thread trying to detract from the image of lagos You guys need to focus more on Onitsha, Aba etc. Your obsession with Lagos is bordering on schizophrenia. The largest developmental projects in Nigeria are in Lagos, don't worry about us. 2 Likes |

The Capitalist had hijacked the humanitarian development in the world economy, and those at the hel of affairs didn't realized this! look: In any country annual budget i. 70% goes to recurrent expenditure, that is, money used to manage the governance, 30% went to office employee,70% to their materials, ac, cars, computer, electricity bill etc. ii. 30% goes to Capital expenditures, which is executed by foreigners, The people hardly had 20% of the budget yearly, how can't state growth than the people? |
