What is the procedure/steps to take when traveling on expired F-1 visa but active OPT with a job. Canada to be precise. Applying for Advance parole might take long. Any heads up?

Wait you have this GPA and you are not getting it right on a 'straight line' you want to move 'zig zag'? Ah..You better go and write GRE and apply to top 20 schools in Chemical Engineering and by the way, Writting Gre in Dec might be late for good schools, except you are planning for fall 2019.

i just googled the school now and I cant really say its a good engineering school or not. If your dream is chemical Engineering and not aeronautical, please go and write GRE and apply to a proper good chemical engineering school. Many people missed it in life because of wrong step which takes years to retrace. Dont allow your village people to win this war. The school might be good in aeronautical but I cant say the same for chemical engineering.
Boss,

you meant fall 2018 not 2019 you wrote there ,right?

Good morning everyone.

Please I need a career advice.

I have my bachelors in Biology education (BSc ed) with a 3.0/4.0 GPA when evaluated with WES.

After contacting few schools in USA and sending an unofficial copy of my transcript to them for questioning, I was made to realize that I can do a masters in biology or related course as well as masters in biology education.

I graduated from university since 2013 and all my post university life has been centered on teaching

I am really passionate about my teaching career and would like to further to masters level. But on doing further enquires from schools. I was replied that there are no funding /grants /GA for education students because they are mostly attachments to science faculty and science faculty can't provide GA of MSc education.

Those are the replies from Illinois state University, North Carolina state University, North Missouri state University respectively.

I can still find my way to cough out the tuition with the support of my family as well as my personal savings. I want to ask that how lucrative is education career in USA and the chances of getting a teaching job after graduation, just incase I decide to stay back a little as plan B. Plan A is to return to nigeria and start my own school.

Or would you rather advise me to opt for masters in biology because of the GA and funding?.

Thanks.

Special thanks to the Boss lady Lagosismyhome - you are a blessing to this family, Imperioux & Bigfrancis - your careful and detailed advise to the upcoming is of great value, Twoods- your constructive criticism sha..but the hard truth has to be told, Walspring - Keep touching lives.

My interview was on 12th-Oct.
So I got to the embassy by 5am & met them 'staple your docs & get coloured copy of your data page' people. Thankful for the knowledge I acquired here...
I was interviewed by a white guy on window 3.

Me: "Good morning".

Vo: ignores me

Me: (hia!!!ogbeni ogini kwa) "Good morning"

Vo: Looks up & smiles "Good morning my man"

Me: "How was your night?"

Vo: "Fine fine. Yours?"

Me: *Relaxed at this point "it was fine too thanks."

Vo: "I see you are going to school, which university?"

Me: "I am going to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for my Msc in Environmental Science. I will be specialising on Env Tech & Assessment."

Vo: "Tell me about your undergrad?"

Me: "I studied Civil Engineering @ FUTO.. I specialized on Env/Water Resources Eng. It was at this point I became aware of the impacts of human activities on the environment so I made up my mind on a career in env remediation & protection. I also.." (vo cuts in)

Vo: "Tell me the main problem of solid waste in Nigeria?"

Me: "The major challenge with solid waste in Nigeria is improper disposal. Here, we practice open dumping and sometimes dispose of our waste in waterbodies hence polluting the environment, breeding rodents & pests, and disrupting biodiversity in the rivers & streams..."(I sha kept on blabbing)

Vo: "So why this school?"

Me: "I am inspired to study at siue because unlike my other admits, the department at siue provides and maintains long-term field sites for monitoring environmental remediation processes. These field sites would be of great benefit to me as my intended area of research focuses primarily on environmental remediation using phytoremediation technologies (*at this time the vo was shaking his head in disapproval then cuts in...)

Vo: "I can see you rehearsed for this.. ok tell me; what fiels sites are you talking about?"

Me: "Well you know that Illinois is nicknamed the Prairie state because of the abundance of grassy plains like the oak savannahs. Siue in collaboration with the us.epa gives the students and faculty access to these restored sites for research. (*He started smiling & somehow at this point I knew he was going to approve me.)

Vo: "Who is paying for this?"

Me: Told him

Vo: "What does he do?"(*begins to seperate my i-20 & sevis from my passport)

Me: Told him.

Vo: Picks white paper and says the magic words. It was really magical. People who have experienced this can confirm.

I advice you prepare well and don't cram your responses as it kinda irritates the impatient ones.

Please pray.

Hello slimmy2005 -

You may remain in the US on an expired F-1 visa so long as you remain in F-1 status. If you leave the country, in order to re-enter you will need to apply for a new F-1 visa. This can only be done at a US Embassy or Consulate outside the US.

The most important thing to consider during graduate school is finance (forget about passion, you have lived 20+years of your life, time to be realistic is now). Since the education option provides not sensible financial path, this is no hard feat, you should take the biology option. Now if you love teaching so much, you should try to take the TOEFL exams and ace it with a reasonable speaking score, after that, start mailing members of the faculty in your line and ask about the possibility of getting TA positions (you'd most likely get, because very few graduate students are very enthusiastic about teaching). with the TA you can build a relationship with the professors in charge of the course and get other good funding packages with sensible stipends. If you have the time, you can add education modules to your coursework and volunteer in available teaching programs during your summer time to "teash dem oyinbo shudren".
.
Last words; Immigration is tightening up, and us has an abundant teaching pool, so it would be almost impossible to get sponsored for a teaching role, the new unicorn now is STEM, and with a biological degree with statistical concentrations and a little programming skill, you are likely to land a job before graduation. when you finally get PR , you can decide to then go and teach and not have worry about money or your future.
PS: To presume to point a man to the right and ultimate goal— to point with a trembling finger in the RIGHT direction is something only a fool would take upon himself. (take my advise with a pinch of salt)

I do have a conference in Canada I need to attend and it’s very important I do. Can I travel to Canada apply for a B1/B2? Would that take away by F-1 benefit?

What would you suggest I do in this case? Do I get an extended I-20 from my DSO and apply for another f-1 visa?

If you enter the country on a B1/B2 visa you cannot work. That means you could not participate in your OPT. If you want to leave the country and re-enter for that purpose, you will need a new I-20 and you will need to apply for a new F-1.

Should I fill them as dependents even though they are not accompanying me immediately?

Bros, fill in your dependents in your form(s) and a question will be asked if you want them to accompany you to the US. Just tick 'NO'. Filling your dependents information will be easier if you want them to join you later. All the best bros. Please, be sincere when filling the form(s) so as not to jeopardize chance of your family coming to join you in the US.

paulavon:
Thanks for your response, I am yet to fill them in my i-20 release form as dependents, I am scared it will affect my chances in getting Visa approval with respect to home ties.
Should I fill them as dependents even though they are not accompanying me immediately?

You can apply with them if you have the sufficient funds. We have success stories of applicants that have applied with their family on this thread. Follow your heart and you will be favoured during/after interview.

**cheers

paulavon:
Greetings to everyone.
Is it advisable for me to apply for my student Visa with my family or I should apply alone?

Mayorboi:
Visa Transcript.

First I need to state it clearly that God + preparation is the key to F1.
I appreciate this nairaland family.

For my undergrad project, I carried out a dissertation on the Design of an integrated solid waste management system for futo community.

Vo: (listening & nodding in concurrence).. "Tell me the factors you consider when designing an engineered sanitary landfill

Me: *whistles(haba!!! From where kwanu).. "Well I would consider location & topography. The landfill must be cited away from the settlement & at a place where seepage from the waste won't affect the underlying aquifer. (*Me I sha wanted to use jargon so it ll look like I know what I am saying very well).

I hereby usher in more Spring 2018 approved visa transcripts.
Congrats bro. I tap in your success.
