Just as the title reads...

Had an interview and during the process, I was informed....

That, if I get called up. They will have to hold on to my NYSC DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE. Also, all the present staff are in on the arrangement.

They promised to have it in a vault at Diamond bank or the one at Montgomery, Yaba and will give me the receipt.

This arrangement seems draconian and slave like to me. There is something sinister about it or am I just a vain paranoid?

I want your opinions on this, will you agree to work for a firm that is holding you to ransom or by the "balls"?

PS: They said it is a measure to control theft, it still feels to drastic to me.

What will you do?

Don't ever let them do that to you. It's uncalled for. It's not done. Beware.

That's modern slavery. What if you get a better offer, don't you think getting it back to leave the company might become an issue..

If u are very desperate for the job, then I know ur mind is already made up and our opinions are just formalities, but if not.. Don't subscribe to them withholding ur certificate,
There are other documents that guide against theft e.g A guarantors' form.
So, withholding ur certificate is really suspicious and not warranted.

Brother, I am not desperate for a job oh.

I wanted to know if other people are doing something like this.

I like your suggestion and if they call me for the second stage, I will go and tell them my stand.

Giving that certificate is like giving away my right and no way will I do that.

Thanks.

If the salary is worth it and the working condition is favourable, go to the computer center, make a replica of your discharge cert and hand the fake one over to them. They didn't send you to sch so they don't need the original discharge cert.

Please don't give in to this type of rvbbish, it is totally wrong. Unfortunately you might not get the job if you don't accept but this is totally a slave-Master arrangement.

In sane climes, this employer will be in industrial court now.

May sense fall on the useless employer. May good and better opportunity fall on the OP

They aren't holding you to ransom since u would be given a receipt which I believe would carry a signature and stamp. If you are so scared, make a video recording when tendering it just to be on the safer side.

Na which kind yeye work be that? Sorry to say this, they don't have intelligent/ well informed people running that company.

If actually they are doing that to control theft, what of guarantor form you will fill before onboarding? Moreover, if they are really serious about protecting the company then they should get a Fidelity guarantee insurance policy. Fidelity guarantee policy is designed for companies to protect them against loss of money, property and other valuables due to the dishonesty or fraudulent activities of their employees.
