Ishilove: I studied music, I read music, I play musical instruments, I understand music and I've got an eclectic taste in music. I love classical music, rap, calypso, highlife, juju, fuji, ragga, reggae, house, electro, chutney, soca, akpala, kwaito, euro-pop, disco, R&B, soul and a host of other genres of music. The only musical style that I was skeptical about was jungle, but I do love Jungle Is Massive. This is one of the best pieces of music ever composed by a human being. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UIHl0oJEpg |

Ishilove:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Coincidentally, I have a Vinyl Record copy of The Chi-Lites in my music archives of the 70s and 80s. The songs of those days made a lot of sense. They remain evergreen. Great post! |

naptu2:^^^^^^ @ naptu Thanks for the YouTube video @naptu Despite being from Sierra Leone, Bunny Mack massively rocked the Nigerian airwaves in the very early 80s along with Kris Okotie and London-born Jide Obi who both finished from UNN. Bunny Mack and Kris Okotie even went on a nation-wide tour together. Bunny Mack's "Let Me Love You" was massive. I couldn't get enough of it then. I remember the hugely successful OFEGE [Dapo Olumide who was the former MD of Aero Contractors and his other School Boy Band members from St. Gregory's College, Obalende, Lagos ]. They released the massive albums "Try and Love" in 1973 and "Last of the Origins" in 1976. ===> Ofege - Try and Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0DayzdzdRg ===> "Last of the Origins" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av3WMZ7rlbQ |

naptu2: @naptu2 I'm filled with goose bumps and fond memories just listening to "Nobody Fails"! I didn't know that YouTube has these songs uploaded in the achives. Ofege as a spirit for me will never die. I still have a 40 kobo [U.K. price of 50pence] November 1976, Vol. 71 Nigerian Edition copy of TRUST magazine with their pictures on the front cover which featured a story on how they were having problems with their Music Manager [Mr. Odion Iruobe]/ management at EMI Records over financial matters and they requested for a Range Rover which was not granted after they had mad a lot of money from album sales worth over N500,000 every year [The Nigerian Naira was stronger than the British Pound Sterling in 1976/77 based on the exchange rate]. Ofege Members: Berkley Jones, Dapo Olumide, Felix Inneh, Mike Meme, Melvin Ukachi, Olushoga Benson, Paul Alade "Nobody Fails" was huge and I remember even as late as 1979/1980 the song with "Whizzy Ilabo" were still being played as if they were freshly made. 1 Like 3 Shares

Ishilove:^^^^^ @Ishilove Yes it is, but some of my other vinyl albums from the 70s got damaged due to lack of use. I will make sure I get/buy new ones from online music stores because those albums are classics. |

Ishilove: Yea... Bunny Mack was proudly Sierra Leonian but I also initially thought he was Nigerian. Anyhow Nigerians and Sierra Leonians almost sound alike when talking. |

Ishilove: @Ishilove My JVC Turntable from the 70s is not functioning again but I still have it. To listen to those vinyl albums again, I'll have to buy a new one from either Amazon or eBay - and I will do just that. Some of these equipment can still be purchase online along with 60s/70s/80s vinyl albums. ===> https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Video-Turntables/b?ie=UTF8&node=3003611 ===> http://www.ebay.com/bhp/vinyl-player Some of my vinyls have bad scratches on the surface and are due for replacement because they are classics like some of my 1970s Fela and Ofege albums. Thanks to this thread and YouTube - we can still listen to some of the classic songs again without turntables in the meantime. PS: I don't blame your dad for having Ofege among his favourites. It shows he has great taste in good music. PPS: [1] Dapo Olumide [LATER Captain Dapo Olumide, a pilot] is the mixed race former MD of Aero Contrators which he joined in 1982, and Chief Executive Officer at Virgin Nigeria Airways. He is 3rd from the left in the 1st attached picture with afro hair cut. [2] He is also the 4th from the left in the 2nd attached picture. [3] The 3rd attached picture is Capt. Aha! I've finally cleared up the confusion. I remember that this group was called Skyy Port. That's the name that is in my memory. But nobody online calls them Skyy Port. They are called Skyy. So where did I get the name Skyy Port from? Well, Skyy Port is actually the name of this album. Words can't describe how much I love this song. (I think they also came to Nigeria). Skyy - Here's To You (1980). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHm9nzgkhtE |

Nigerian boogie. There's another song (by Jide Obi) that should be with these two, but I can't remember the name of that song. I can still see the Gold de Kanterbrau mugs dancing. Konquest might be interested in this. naptu2: 1 Like 1 Share |

naptu2:^^^^^^^^^ @naptu2 Thanks for the YouTube links of Jide Obi and Kris Okotie. Kill Me With Love" is still the best song from Jide Obi in my opinion. I just got to find out early today online that the iconic Bunny Mack passed on in London on 11th July, 2015. I was deeply stunned! "Let Me Love You" will remain evergreen in our hearts. Also another inspirational musician of the 70s/early 80s by the name William Onyeabor who sang "When the Going is Smooth and Good" - his last music release in 1985, passed on in Enugu on 16th January, 2017! Have a great weekend Naptu! I'll keep following this thread and post any other iconic 70s/early 80s songs soon. |
