I am happy i wasn't born an ibo. These people are cursed and evil. Shameless and pathetic people they are. Two years ago, a university in the east made ibo language compulsory for everybody. Their excuse was that they don't want their language to go extinct. When ibos did this, no Yoruba man complained. We just did not give a fucckk about them and what they did. Only Ibos won't mind their business. Ibos should learn to mind their business. When Nigeria separate, is this how you will be behaving? Poking your nose into our affairs?
Ibos should focus on their land.

Hypocrites everywhere.

Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, Director, Igbo Renaissance at the Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), Abia, said on Saturday that the university would soon introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory course in the second year.

Mr. Madubuike announced this at Uturu during the 6th edition of the Igbo (Uturu) Cultural Carnival, which held at the university.

"By the next two years, the university plans to introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory subject for all students in the second year.

"Whether you are Yoruba, Hausa or Efik, you must take Igbo as a compulsory subject, in spite of your area of specialisation," he said.

Mr. Madubuike described the Igbo language as the "soul of the culture of Ndigbo," adding that the disappearance of the language would mean the ultimate death of the culture.

Earlier, the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra state, Laz Ekwueme, called for concerted efforts by people of the South-East to save the Igbo language from going extinct.

Mr. Ekwueme, who was the chairman of the carnival, expressed regret that the Igbo language was under serious threat, due to the decline in its usage as a means of communication in various families.

He noted that many families of Igbo origin preferred to communicate in foreign languages, especially the English language, with their children.

"More often, nowadays, you find many parents communicating with their children and relations in the English language, rather than the Igbo language," he said.

Mr. Ekwueme regretted that the development was capable of endangering the Igbo language, if not promptly checked.

The monarch, who was a former Minister of Education, commended the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Greg Ibe, for initiating the carnival.

"Anything that is done to encourage the sustenance of the Igbo language and culture would be encouraged," he said.

Mr. Ekwueme noted that the event would add value to similar efforts designed to re-establish and reinforce the Igbo culture.

It will be recalled that Mr. Peter Obi during the launch of Subawa Igbo initiative at the Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State introduced  far-reaching measures to revive Igbo language and culture.  Part of the measure was the annual cash award of N250, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000 to the best three Igbo language students in secondary schools in Nigeria.

Mr Obi. also gave cash donations as well as university scholarship to the best two Igbo language students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Messrs Kevin Anozie and Chika Echeta, of Holy Child Secondary School, Isuofia and Bishop Onyemelukwe Secondary School, Onitsha, respectively. Before now, the former governor had signed into law a bill to enforce the speaking and writing of Igbo language among Ndigbo in Anambra and Diaspora, and also stopped meting of corporal punishment to students who speak Igbo in schools in the state.

Like English Language and Mathematics, Mr. Obi’s strive to make  Igbo Language  compulsory in all educational institutions in the state, and also sent a bill to that effect to the State House of Assembly as well as making a pass in Igbo Language mandatory for employment in the state. To sustain the renewed interest in Igbo studies, the state government has commenced the building of Chief Chidozie Ogbalu Igbo Language School at a cost of N50.5 million for specialized and holiday programmes in Igbo.

Notable Igbo groups such as Igbo World Union  (IWU) have been emphasising the need for  Igbos to exert efforts in reviving Igbo Language  and its earlier cultural activities. The group is also harping on  the need for Igbos at home and those in Diaspora, especially    parents to cultivate the habit of  inculcating in their children Igbo culture and tradition. The group has also succeeded in setting up an Igbo school in  South Africa, France, Spain and United States.

Despite the above efforts, much needs to be done to forestall Igbo language and culture going extinct. This is because, to the average Igbo, it has become more fashionable to speak English and other languages except Igbo.

It is also regrettable that most Igbo hold their town union meetings in English. Government business in Igbo states is entirely conducted in English. This attitude is not only pathetic but  funny attitude and must change before Igbo language regains its lost glory.

While we commend Mr. Peter  Obi for his foresight in introducing the far- reaching measures to revive the Igbo language and culture, we appeal to Igbo speaking states governors measures to revive Igbo language  to use these now that the language is among those predicted to go extinct in the near future if nothing drastic is done to promote its usage.Huge funds should be made available to encourage people to study and research in Igbo and give incentives for teachers to specialise in Igbo

Yari.ba shall be the first in line to criticize the agitation for actualization of republic of Igbo land or Biafra yet will cunningly try to create cultural homogenous society. Those moronic Igbo who tend to kick the idea of home land for Ndigbo should examine an attempt to force non-Yari.ba peeps to learn and speak Yari.ba language in Yari.ba controlled schools.

Let the Eboe go back to the East and create their own cultural homogenous society.... no one is stopping them. Must they live in Lagos if they don't like its rules.

you believe "as long as it hurt igbos..you're okay"

one was even asking "why must it always be igbos reacting on matters like this..while other tribes are cool"

they're not..
igbo don't pretend..if they're not okay with an action..they voice.. they don't take nor like bullshits..and are blunt..

what lagos state government is about to introduce will be the beginning of an empire and an end of the Oba dynasty.

you guys are planning to yorubanise lagos.. others are planning to islamise lagos and install an emir..

between yoruba muslims have already made their demand known.. via restructuring position.
Planning to Yorubanise Lagos, ke? When the same Lagos has always been a Yoruba state? Or was it ever an Igbo, or Ijaw or Fulani state, in the past?

Igbo children are your target primarily. We know Yorubas to well. Igbos are specifically endowed.....dominating sports, entertainment, beauty contests and etc. It's only a matter of time when awards and shows will be conducted in Yoruba language in lagos. This will give the outside world the impression that all these talented and beautiful people are Yorubas.

Unity beggars in other to promote Yoruba tribe only.

Raw truth is indeed very painful for your lot. Ape man, we don't like your nature, your one Nigeria, talk less your laws. We have sacrificed over 4 million lives in the past to convince you of this fact, to separate from your lagos and your Nigeria. For your information, huge Igbo population in lagos came as deliberate federal government policies of forced migration to lagos few years after the war, specifically under obasungo who deliberately destroyed the PH sea port and made sure there is no international airport anyway in the se/ss zone. The question that is begging for answer is this; why will Yorubas willing to force igbos into their orbit of one Nigeria only to conspire with hausa/fulani to destroy
the same people .

All this yoruba attempt to convert other tribes to yoruba is doomed to fail.

Go and teach your yoruba children their language, culture and heritage, leave other tribes out of it.

We will not hesitate to drag Lagos state government to court and get that Bill by Lagos State Assembly struck out as unconstitutional.

Just leave our children that are not yoruba out of your tribalistic ethnic domination agenda of other tribes residing the the Commercial capital of our Country Nigeria.
