This song is absolutely perfect. There is not a single flaw in it. It is the most perfect song that I know. Everything was perfect. From the arrangement (Quincy Jones is a genius!) to the video, the tuxedo (I wanted that tuxedo), basically everything was perfect.

This song was my introduction to Michael Jackson (the solo artist). Yeah, I had heard ABC and all the other songs, but this was my proper introduction to Michael Jackson.

This song was released during the disco era and I absolutely love disco music. The strings were out of this world.

I remember the hugely successful OFEGE [Dapo Olumide who was
the former MD of Aero Contractors and his other School Boy Band
members from St. Gregory's College, Obalende, Lagos ].
They released the massive albums "Try and Love" in 1973 and
"Last of the Origins" in 1976.

I remember when we had a reunion (in 2008 or 2009). This song came on and there was a 70 year old man who couldn't control himself anymore. He just had to dance.

CHECK OUT THE RHYTHM ON THIS SONG! I haven't even gotten to the excellent guitar playing, just check out the rhythm!

Now, for those of you that don't know, (1) these were secondary school kids. They were students at St Gregory's College when they released this track (2) This song was done in 1974. (3) They played the instruments themselves.

Coincidentally, I have a Vinyl Record copy of The Chi-Lites
in my music archives of the 70s and 80s. The songs of those
days made a lot of sense. They remain evergreen.

I studied music, I read music, I play musical instruments, I understand music and I've got an eclectic taste in music.

I love classical music, rap, calypso, highlife, juju, fuji, ragga, reggae, house, electro, chutney, soca, akpala, kwaito, euro-pop, disco, R&B, soul and a host of other genres of music. The only musical style that I was skeptical about was jungle, but I do love Jungle Is Massive.

This is one of the best pieces of music ever composed by a human being.

I'm filled with goose bumps and fond memories just listening to Nobody Fails!
I didn't know that YouTube has these songs uploaded in the achives.

Ofege as a spirit for me will never die. I still have a 1976
copy of Drum magazine with their pictures on the front cover
which featured a story on how they were having problems with their
management over financial matters and they requested for a Range
Rover which was not granted after they had mad a lot of money from album
sales.

I've got a confession to make. I didn't know the lyrics of this wonderful song when it was released in 1980, so what I used to sing was

I know Farridah.



Then I graduated to "I know Korea", before I eventually got the lyrics.

This was one of those watch night songs.

You see, although there were power cuts back then, it was quite rare for them to last more than 5 hours. The power was usually back after one or two hours. So, if there's a power cut that has gone on for more than 5 hours (especially if they don't bring back the electricity before nightfall) then we'll know that there's a major fault.

Old Man would bring out his battery powered radio and you'll hear this kind of songs. Then they'll announce that there's a fault and tell us exactly when electricity would be restored. And they always restored it when they said that they would.


I can't find the album version, but this is the closest to it.

These were two of the biggest pop stars in Nigeria and, interestingly, they were roommates at the University of Nigeria (along with a third musician who I don't consider to be on their level).

I should do a versus series with their videos, but there aren't enough of their videos on YouTube.

I Need Someone is Chris Okotie's biggest hit, but, believe it or not, it's not on YouTube. I don't think it's his best song, but it was his biggest hit.

Kill Me With Love was Jide Obi's biggest hit and it is on YouTube. I don't think it was his best song, but it was his biggest hit.

So, I'm still going to post two of the biggest songs of 1981.

Unfortunately the record skips a couple of times in the first video (vinyl). The second song was also used in a beer advert in the early and mid '80s and I can almost picture the beer mugs dancing anytime I listen to the song.

Ok, I'll be fair. The other guy wasn't bad. It's just that I didn't consider him to be on the same level as Kris Okotie and Jide Obi. His music was ok, but I didn't consider him to be a serious musician. I remember him more for the weird way his name is spelt, his fleet of pimped W123 Mercedes Benz cars and the (girls) names that he gave to his songs. We used to tease a particular girl with his songs.

Then I heard his songs in the early 2000s and they are not half bad. In fact, they are quite good.

the best song from Jide Obi in my opinion.

I just got to find out early today online that the
iconic Bunny
Mack passed on in London on 11th July, 2015. I was deeply
stunned! "Let Me Love You" will remain
evergreen in our hearts.


Also another inspirational musician of the
70s/early 80s by the name William Onyeabor
who sang "When the Going is Smooth and Good"
- his last music release in 1985, passed on in
Enugu on 16th January, 2017!
