I love this development , i urge other yoruba and non-yoruba speaking states to emmulate this , it'll atleast help develop our local dialect and boost the chances of a yoruba schooling outside his/her region have an inkling of their local dialect.

Lagos Assembly passes bill making Yoruba language compulsory in schools

The bill makes the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory both in private and public schools in the state. It also makes it a core subject at all levels.

I think this idea is unnecessary becos in their houses they will not be speaking Yoruba.

I hope u understand the point am trying to make here. Yoruba has to be encouraged as a primary means of communication at homes in the state.

We know the official language of Nigeria is English. But the official language of Yorubaland is Yoruba. Lagos is yorubaland and the language must be made compulsory. If you don't like it, take your kids to aba, simple.

This is very backward. If i may ask, wat stop Yoruba people speaking yoruba in their house or taking yoruba studies?

Must u force ur language on others? I think it is improper and wrong.

Over 50% of Lagos population are not Yorubas.

It is cosmopolitan with a growing population of international residence from other continent doing business and living in Nigeria commercial capital city.

If you don't want to learn Yoruba language, get out of Yoruba land. It's as easy as staying out of the SW and you won't have to learn Yoruba language.
months:
No member of my family and never will my children go to School to waste their time learning a language that is useless in commerce, science and technology.

I sent them to school to develop themselves and contribute to human development.

How is my Igbo son/daughter learning Yoruba useful?

All this yoruba attempt to convert other tribes to yoruba is doomed to fail.

Go and teach your yoruba children their language, culture and heritage, leave other tribes out of it.

We will not hesitate to drag Lagos state government to court and get that Bill by Lagos State Assembly struck out as unconstitutional.

Just leave our children that are not yoruba out of your tribalistic ethnic domination agenda of other tribes residing the the Commercial capital of our Country Nigeria.

My children education is my priority and I am totally vested in wat they learn at School.

I want the best for them. I believe the time they will use to learn Yoruba, is best spent learning French.

There should be an option for non-yorubas in the City of Lagos.

Your brain must have been badly roasted by the hot sun in Biafra. Most of you are just useless confusionists. If this thread is sent to FP and yorubas end up schooling you and calling your bluff, I am sure your stupid self will sign in with an alternate moniker and start wailing about how nairaland mods and s_eun "only move tribalistic threads to FP". Any of you idiots who hate the laws in yorubaland should hurry home and stop shedding tears and beating chest as if na your ancestors get Lagos. And again I say quit the fallacy of more than 50% population in Lagos are non-yorubas Igbos make up less than 15% of Lagos population so i refuse to understand your lamentations so far. Even foreigners with far more population in Lag than Igbo don't go around creating threads questioning our right to treat our land in whatever was we choose. If your people told you igbo are up to 20% in Lagos, they lied. But I'm not surprised since you all tell lies to provide an avenue to beat your empty chest.

No!

If Yoruba want Lagos as a Tribal headquarters, we are not opposed to that and will not fight dem over that but they must learn to accept that we have a right to our own Country Biafra.

Stop coming to fight us in our land over Biafra.

That way, everybody will be happy and their will be peace.

Op and you don't know igbo language is also compulsory in the east from primary one to js three?
Don't mind him and his clan. Anambra passed a law since 2010, making the teaching and learning of Igbo in all schools a mandatory exercise, and prescribed various fines as penalties, to be paid by defaulting schools. No Yoruba, Ibibio or Hausa person made noise in Anambra when that bill was passed. It even stipulated that if students fail Igbo language, they are not to be promoted to the next class. Yet hypocrites on this thread are wailing about how Lagos is introducing Yoruba language in its schools.

Legitnow and Klinee obviously see nothing wrong with Anambra state law, but are upset with Lagos state making Yoruba compulsory in schools, just like Anambra made Igbo compulsory in all its schools. We are all watching you people in 3D.

All me am saying is that the language should be compulsory for Yorubas only.

Ijaw, Igbo and Hausa children should not be compelled to learn Yoruba.

This is my major concern, rather give our children French.

At the end of the day let us see who benefit most.
Anambra state made the teaching and learning of Igbo compulsory in all its schools within the state, since 2010. Did anybody from any other tribe protest against it?

Why do we Nigerian make issues where there is non, we don't appreciate our own, having your child taught in Yoruba won't stop him or her excelling in life and from speaking other languages like yours. English is not our native language but we could speak it with our indigenous languages.

As far as am concern, the move by lagos state government is right. The project is targeted for the yoruba race. if you feel you don't want your children to learn yoruba, kindly discuss with the school management or move out its simple.
