“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe”.
- Abraham Lincoln
1) Pareto Principle; Better known as the 80/20 rule or as the law of the vital few originated from Vilfredo Pareto’s observation in 1906 that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. This law emphasizes the need to put in more effort towards the most impactful action or task set before us and less action towards the less impactful ones. It implies that most of the important productive, rewarding accomplishments in our lives come from only a fraction of the time we put in. The key issue for all to learn is the fact that we don’t necessarily have to work “harder” so to say but to work “smarter” by focusing on things with high yield. We must find things to eliminate and say no to unproductive work. We must always weigh our opportunity costs and choose the smartest way of doing things especially when allocating our time, energy, resources and attention.
2) Parkinson’s Law
“We should be careful not to exhaust our available time on things that are merely good and leave little time for that which is better or best”. – Dallin Oaks
Also known as the Law of Triviality was propounded in 1957 by Cyril Northcote Parkinson when he observed that people often give disproportionate focus to trivial projects at work. The law states that “the time something will take depends on how much time you allot to it”. That is to say a task will always adjust itself to fit into allotted time either little or much. The law observed that we spend a good portion of our lives wasting time. Hence, the lesson for all is the need to set limits and constraints for activities in our lives; we must believe that we can do more with less. We also need to note that it is not only time that obeys this rule; it’s everything. Anytime you’re drawing on resources, the amount of it that you use will be affected by the amount you have at your disposal.
3) How To Learn
“One bit of advice; it is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree- make sure you understand the fundamental principles i.e. the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang onto”. – Elon Musk
Very often we confuse learning with schooling, but we need to know that while we can learn in school, we don’t need to go to school to learn and whereas school is structured, time bound and extrinsically regulated; learning can happen anytime, anywhere and any day and it is self-directed in nature giving you the opportunity to learn whatever you want. We need to also know that learning is a process and not a goal and if we must get the desire value from whatever we are learning, we must as of necessity commit to the process because learning has a compounding effect. True learning is progressive in nature; just like a building; first the foundation then the step by step laying on of blocks . Staying motivated is also key to really learn. True learning involves having a sense of purpose ; doing what you really want to do and improving your skill one step at a time, every single day.
N.B: Make sure you learn something that helps you solve current real world problems.
