They use the G-3 as their primary service rifle. Although, the MPT-76 will soon replace it. However, i think we are looking at a GPMG type weapon here, not really a carbine or a "standard" rifle.

*The very first US ODA with whom I ever interacted as a candidate officer in planning came to SA to share their Balkan experience and cross-train with the Recces and STF. I had an Honours degree from the top-ranked university in Africa (ranked globally in the 150-60 range throughout 1990-2000s) and thought I was the sh*t. I remember looking at all of them, Green Berets, Recces and Takkies and being awed at these 30-40 year olds for whom rank, degrees, status etc meant nought.

ODA xxxx went on to be one of the spear-heads of Op Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; most of the Recces and Takkies would resign and go on to fight in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places; others continue to serve as senior officers/instructors in active duty/reserves.
As a callow 21-year old I was simultaneously awed through inexperience, and sans-merit, dismissive through classism and misplaced intellectual snobbishness; years later I'm still awed, through respect.

It's marketing strategy -- my own is better than yours. Arguably in fighter jet engines has the west comparative advantage. In relative spectrum of warfare it's a graveyard of empires to contend with the Russian Bear.

Russian military training and combat operations is insane plus the Russian is a ferocious die-hard nigh tireless being. Always has been.

Talk about Portuguese, there was a time where I was unofficially taking Portuguese classes at high school. Why did I bother? Well, we had some African/Portuguese (mixed) kids from the elite Mozambican ruling class at the institution. God, they had the finest girls I've ever seen, they killed our black and white girls dead in the beauty department.... Just as the military gets things stabilized and has the upper-hand, the politicians see the opportunity to withdraw.

Trump's re-commitment to Afghan and the deployment of additional troops was a smart move - just give it time. Since the announcement - and the implication that the US is prepared to stay another 4-8 years - moderate voices in the Taliban have started saying they may be prepared to approach the negotiation table.

Obama fvcked it all up when he announced a withdrawal timetable - Taliban knew all they had to do was survive until withdrawal was complete. I have no idea why people love that guy, he is surely one of the most inept statesmen the US has ever produced... I guess its because he made pretty speeches.

Allmost the exact same things happened in Veitnam and Iraq.
