It is the dream of every student to graduate with first class honour , but only few have been able to achieve this. Is it about the pride in saying, "I graduated with first class" or the great demand for first class graduates in the labour market? Is it about making your parent proud or because of other reasons? Whatever your reason might be, you are about to know the secrets of first class students . first of all, ask yourself if you really want to graduate with first class. If your answer is yes, you are one step ahead. Secondly, ask yourself, Can I graduate with first class? . If your answer is yes, you are two steps ahead. That is the spirit you need. The final and most important question is "How do I graduate with first class?" , which is the question that gave birth to this article. So, let's answer the question, "How to graduate with first class" . 1. DEVELOP A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD If you make God number one in your agenda, he will make you number one. While you are on campus, you will faced with different crises(physically and sometimes spiritually). The only solution is to pray to God Almighty. 2. SET A SMART GOAL You have to set a goal before you can achieve it. Your target goal must be Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely(SMART). At the beginning of each academic session, choose the scores and grades you wish to have in all your courses and write it down. You can't possible make a first class when your target goal is to graduate with a second class. So, get your goals right and make it smart. 3. STAY FOCUSED Making the decision, "I want to graduate with first class" Is quite easy to say. Keeping the dream alive is the difficult one. When you face crises on campus, don't despair and keep your head straight up. Remain focused and determined towards achieving your goal(To graduate with first class). It is very certain that a lot of things will want to distract and discourage you, but you have to remain focused and determined. That is the spirit you need to graduate with first class. 4. USE YOUR TIME THE RIGHT WAY If you want to graduate with first class in school, you have to manage your time effectively. Know how to use your time the right way. Do not place anything above your academic works. Studies first, then others follow. Don't waste your time on social activities. 5. ATTEND CLASSES, PRACTICALS AND TUTORIALS If you are willing to graduate with first class, you must not take this point lightly. Strive to attend all lectures and practicals, join study tutorials and discuss academic works with mates. Don't take any of your academic work with levity. When doing this, ensure you are punctual. There is no class that is not important, you will learn at least one new thing in every lecture. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly from lecturers and get first-class answer. Do you even know that lecturers ask questions that will come out of examination during lectures? Yes, they do. If you are wise, that is an expo for you. 6. BE AHEAD OF OTHERS Who is a first class graduate? A graduate among other graduates that is ahead of others academically based on his/her report. So, if you want to become a first class graduate, you have to be ahead of others. Read ahead of others, read ahead of your examination, read ahead of your lecturers, read ahead of your mates. You want to be a first class graduate, so you must be ahead. 7. DISCOVER YOURSELF What works for Paul might not work for Peter. While some students cram for examination to become first class graduate, cramming for examination might not work you. Know yourself, be yourself. Discover your most effective study time, discover your most effective study method, know your strengths and weaknesses. Work on these discoveries and use them the right way. 8. KNOW YOUR LECTURERS AND YOUR SCHOOL Each school has its own way of conduct, and also each lecturer has his/her own system. One man's food is another man's poison. While some lecturers like students that write additional information in examination and give them bonus marks, other lecturers don't like it and remove marks. How do you know which lecturer like this and which lecturer hate that? Simple..... Through observation, asking questions in class, answering questions in class and by asking your seniors in school, you'll know each lecturer and what their expectations are. 9. DEVELOP THE RIGHT ATTITUDE You know what? You can't graduate with first class when you don't behave like one. You will hear your mates and seniors saying "Nobody has ever passed the course of this lecturer", "Nobody can get an A in this course", and so on. You have to develop the right attitude and say to yourself, "Yes, I can do it". Don't follow what the crowd say, majority can be wrong sometimes. Neglect all negative thoughts and develop a positive attitude. 10. ASSOCIATE WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE Show me your friends and I'll tell you............... what you'll graduate with. Yes, the type of people you associate with will determine whether you will pass or fail. If you want to graduate with first, work with people of the same thought, mindset and are also hardworking. If you are brilliant, associate with brilliant students. If you are an average students, associate with above average students. Walk with students that will influence your life positively. 11. SEEK HELP Nobody has been created perfectly well, you have to understand that. Always seek help with your academic works where needed. If you don't understand a course or assignment, seek the help of your lecturer or seniors to explain to you. Even when you know it, seek help on it. You'll definitely gain another knowledge. 12. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF PAST QUESTIONS Most lecturers don't have the time to prepare examination questions, they usually have a lot to do. As a result, they bring out majority of their questions from past questions. Go to your seniors, ask them for past questions and solve them. This is another expo you need to pass your examination and graduate with a first class. 13. TAKE DOWN CORRECT AND COMPREHENSIVE NOTES When you attend lectures, make sure you take down correct notes directly from your lecturers and jot down every point. Don't depend on the note you'll copy from your mates, do you know whether he/she has written down the right note. That is why you need to right down notes by yourself, you are rest assured that you are reading the right note. 14. DEVELOP A PERSONAL INTEREST IN YOUR COURSE If you don't develop interest in your course, you won't enjoy it while studying for examination. When you don't enjoy your study time, your study becomes ineffective. No matter the nature of your course, you need to develop personal interest in it. 15.BE DISCIPLINED AND DILIGENT It is impossible to follow all the points mentioned above if you are not disciplined and diligent. If you really want to be a first class student, you must build the act of discipline and diligence. Always control yourself and provide some set of rules you want to follow while you are on your way to graduate with first class. I observed everything you wrote up there and my cgpa is not even close to 'First' talk less Of 'Class' but when I look around me, all my friends where excelling including the ones that sleep through out night class, I was curious to know their secret then I found out it was 'microchips ' The Nigerian university system does not encourage originality, all the lecturers want is garbage in garbage out, so for we that are not good in cramming nko Right now name expo sure pass, after all a wise man once said 'stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results ' What I do is I read the much I can then I assist myself with a few microchips, then I'm good to go and so far so good it's working, my grades have skyrocketed I will not come and kill myself over a certificate that would in the nearest future be seen as garbage 15 Likes 2 Shares |

Very funny post It should be "how to boost your chances of graduating with first class" not how to.. This OP sef There's no laid down principle for any kind of success, academic, financial or otherwise...just know what works for you and judiciously live by it, not some do this today and don't do that anymore write up. 1 Like |

1. Never look down on lectures. Always attend all classes! (ignore tutorials if possible, they mostly don't help atimes) Work with whatever you are taught in class by your lecturers only. Tutorial centers tend to go outside the course outline mostly, but you must no that the exams questions wont be set by the tutorial centers but by your lecturers. 2. Read, Read, Read!!! 3. Run away from girls/guys that have nothing to offer you academically. 4. Remember God/Allah 4 Likes 1 Share |

Here are the technical points on how to graduate with a first class. In your very first week of gaining admission. Grab a copy of your departmental brochure and calculate the total number of credits to be completed before graduation e.g. Year 1 (20 + 19), Year 2 (17 + 18), Year 3 (18 + 18), Year 4 (16 + 17), Year 5 (18 + 17). Total = 20 + 19 + 17 + 18 + 18 + 18 + 16 + 17 + 18 + 17 = 178 If your school uses a 5.0 grade system, to graduate with a first class your GPA needs to be in the range 4.5 - 5.0. Therefore, you need to have accumulated points within the range 801(4.5 * 178) - 890 (5.0 * 178) at the end of your final year. For other credit systems simply replace the 5.0 with whatever your school uses. Another way to look at the step above is that, for you to make a first class, you should not lose more than points in the range 0 - 89, at the end of your final year. How do you translate this to the grades that you need to score every semester/year. If in your first year, first semester (total credit 20) above, if your classes are: U(4 units), V(5 units), W(5 units), X(3 units), Y(3units). If you score a C in all the classes, it means you lost 2 points {(A)5 - (C)3} per credit. Which translates to 40 (2 * 20) for the total number of credits taken that semester. Now out of the total credits not to lose calculated above (i.e. 89) you have 49 left (i.e 89 - 40). In your first year second semester, if you score an average of C again, then you will lose 38 points. Meaning that you have 11 points left that you must not lose to graduate with a first class. Mostly what this means is that on average you will have to ace all your high credit hour classes (4 units and above) for the rest of your time in the program and are only allowed room to for occasional Bs in about three, 3-unit classes and one 2-unit class, till you graduate. To summarize, Do all you can in every semester to ensure that you don't lose more than 7points per semester. At the end of your final year this will translate to 70 points which is less than 89 which will in turn put you in the first class range. Whenever you find that you have lost more than the bench marked points per semester, double up in the next semesters to make up for the lost points until the average lost points over the number of semesters you have taken becomes 7. e.g if you lose 10points in your first year, first semester, ensure that in your next semester you lose only 4points so that the average becomes 7 (i.e [10 + 4] / 2). If you lose 6 points then in the semester that follows ensure that you lose only 5, so that the average over the 3 semesters becomes (10 + 6 + 5) / 3 which is 7. Once you have all the maths figured out, map out a strategy to achieve the set goals. The truth about doing well in exams is that you can't give what you don't have, meaning that you can provide answers to questions if you have the knowledge of how to answer those questions. How can you acquire the needed knowledge, studying and trusting in God. How you study is up to you, be your self, do whatever is convenient for you. Don't copy others. The fact that your friends are always going to library/class to study at night does not mean that you must copy and follow them. If you study well during the day, study during day. Take enough rest when you can. Lastly always assume that you have not studied enough and you don't know enough to excel in the class. The more you make this assumption, the more motivated you will become to study Finally, Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 2 Timothy 2:15a - Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, 13 Likes 5 Shares |

Well most of what he said is true. In UNN, getting a first class is just to know your onions. There is a site that gets the past questions and solutions to the past questions that most First class graduates make use of. Once you know the site, you are in for your first class. Some people would be annoyed with me for letting the cat out of the bag. |
