Honestly, i have never met anyone that applied from naija (I do however know that naija researchers come to yankee on J1 visa. document sorted out yy the research institute or university). but the information is on Department of state website (http://j1visa.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/November-3-2016-Program-Date-Chart.pdf) and shows the time of the year naija students holiday falls on when they are expected in yankee. but you and i know that naija academic calendar isn't "stable" so that might be an issue.

i recommend you check dept of state website. there are several types of programs you can get a J1 visa on.some students even come on Internship for a year or two on J1 visa

Nice thread boss.

Please i have this question to ask, and i would so love it to be enlightened about it.

My fiancée would be leaving to US to do her masters by next month or December this year, she has a brother who's in US via visa lottery for like 5-6years now, so she would be staying with him.

I want to ask, if there any possibilities of me also going to the US after my fiancée has landed in the US just to visit her for vacation, not to stay there, because I don't like anything illegality (lol).

Lastly, if possible, can you please give me steps on how I can join het to spend some vacation with her, though not immediately she enters, may be like next year November, would be good.

Honestly, you have a REALLY LOW chance of getting the visa. Claiming you want to visit your fiancé (who by the way is also a student) shows that you have no strong ties to your home country. There is a higher possibility you decide to stay behind and just marry your fiancé.

If you want a visa so bad, like I always tell people. If you really really want a visa, why not put in a very good application that it would be hard to turn down (Even if at the end you get turned down, you will be sure without reasonable doubt that the consular no just like your face lol)

Old people ( Grand ma, grand pa most times they can’t even speak English and needs a translator), Married couples, Students (high performing), Employee going on official assignment, people going on Medical reasons (with proof of bill payment), group of family members going on family engagement (attend a wedding) with strong financial background, Parents visiting their LEGAL resident kids have HIGHER chance of getting the visa
IF you work in a well-structured organization and you make good salary, you can apply for vacation with documents from your work place showing time off from work was approved. That is a better reason than saying you want to go visit your gf

Let me share my personal visa experience with you.

Before I left yankee on a previous J1 visa, I made sure I join my Profession’s reputable association as a student member. I wanted information of how I can get employed in my chosen field and gain the experience and also I want to network myself, the exams I need to write, what employers look for, classified job adverts etc.( I joined the association and discovered I need to take more classes in the US and it is harder than I thought cos I need to apply for a resident program). I had no reason to be in Yankee till the following year when I will get another J1 during the holiday for work But something came up and I really need to go to the US before the next J1 visa period. Meanwhile my association event will be holing in 3 months and I got an email from them asking me to register if I plan to attend. It was a good enough reason, it is what I was studying in school, they have exhibitions, Researchers from all over the world will be there, annual meeting and some other important career events.
The association sent me an invite, the visa letter, hotel discount, flight discount, free ride from airport (once you show your tag). I took all this documents together with letter from school, my transcript and print out of my association profile. The only issue is who is paying for my trip question I know the consular might ask me even though I was paying for my own trip, I know it was a red flag somehow (I had around 790usd in my account and the whole trip will cost me 620usd, why will I spend all my money on a trip of 5 days?). Thankfully, my department paid a scholarship of 2300USD into my student account. It reflected as “department’s name BURSARY”. I printed that page and used a red pen to highlight it. Took all the documents to my interview with my DS160 page (total of like 9/10 sheets. Always avoid too much documents)
The visa officer asked me about the association, my school, what I was studying, my research (oh, I never started research but I prepared for any question she might ask), the invite letter, my profile page of the association, then who will pay for my trip (I showed her the payment department paid into my account without claiming it is for the trip. I just said Department paid some amount to my account which will help my research). I made sure I highlight how the trip will help my research and I crammed 2 prof’s name who are going to give lectures during the meeting and their topics. The consular at the end of the day was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that I deserve the visa so I got it. That was me doing my assignment. I went for the trip, the 2nd day, I left to go see my gf spent extra 4 days and I was back to school after. The trip helped me, I spoke to many professors and I got many references. Those references is what is helping me today. Some are looking out for my PHD application to their school (lol, I have no intention of a Phd. I just want money at this point lol)

I used same visa over and over. In fact, it made my traveling easier. Flying to another Caribbean country, i just fly through US. They stamp me in for another six month and i spend few hours. i like seeing their six months stamp on my passport when i only spent like 3-5 hours there lol

I am not saying it is Visa is automatic. but use your initiative

If you're a Nigerian student studying Civil engineering for example, join a reputable industry Association in the US. when they have events, they will invite you and possibly give you discounts and send you all the paper works. Most times, they ask students to submit papers on a particular industry topic, if your paper is accepted, most times they will pay for your trips or give you higher discounts since you will be presenting

If you are a pharmacists for example, join a reputable association as an industry person, when they have events, you will get invites.

same thing applies to other professions.

These are better reasons of Visa than "visiting my gf, attending my friend's graduation, i just want to spend vacation in the US, going to buy clothes, going shopping and all other unreasonable excuses.

Do your assignment well. Visas are harder in Naija.

You also need to create a good impression during your interview. Don't be nervous, smile (no just strong face anyhow), make eye contact with interviewing officer. Some of these officers, you sabi pass them. no let "intimidation" affect your interview.

Thanks so much for your wonderful response, not that I really needed visa so bad to that extent, but if I lay my hands on one legally, I would gladly make use of the opportunity.

I am not in haste when it comes to travelling, I just want to know if her being my fiancée gives me an edge to just use it as a visit.

And I heard that since she's a student in US, she has an opportunity to be visited by the husband, may be theirs a clause in their application to that.

I didn't say you can't get the visa. I said the chances are low. Don't get me wrong. it all still depends on the interviewing officer's discretion. I am saying do your part well. Also, there is a huge difference between Fiancee and Husband.

Even at that, Note that the interviewing officer look out for ties to home country. so if you, as a husband is visiting your wife, they wanna see what exactly will make you come back (the employment, kids, properties etc)

All these ones are my PERSONAL ideas and experiences. I still stand on my point, Visas( almost all kind of visas) is harder in Nigeria. "Naija factor" might also have an effect on people's application

YES, if you do your due diligent and put in a good application.

You can't work on a B1/B2 visa. i will not tell you to do something illegal (it is all against the forum, you get me lol). However, i encourage you to apply and get your visas. there are several opportunities here. Your B1/B2 can be adjusted (according to Immigration rule). Na who come yankee know wetin dey .

And there is no way for you and your wife to get residency except you get a work visa and your work place file for residency for you after some years.

Additionally, If you have the opportunity to get a F1 visa, it is a better visa to come with if you have intentions of working while you school

If you plan coming to the caribbean from naija and you're not a frequent flyer or someone with western country visa on their passport, Stay away from countries like Bahamas, Barbados, Trinidad. Those countries even dey deport their Caricom members wey get free entry and exit talkless of you wey dey come from Africa with one Kangaroo vacation grin grin

I can't disclose that. like i said, my friends are most likely watching this thread like a hawk. once i mention the state, they will figure out it might be me cos my gf posts lots of pics on FB upandan grin grin.

just know i live in New England. It consists of 6 states. my State is a major white state. few minorities here.

I take my time to explain cos I want people to make use of opportunities around. Don’t confine yourself to Limited space the world is big enough to be happy and live a fulfilled life.
Most of us Nigerian youths just want to be comfortable, have stable income, a nice car, raise a nice family, stable social amenities (electricity, water, good road etc) and honestly, Nigeria doesn’t offer that (maybe a miracle happens and things change somehow).
Imagine you go to school, struggle, do everything by the book, graduate, serve, go through all these and you can’t find a job. You finally found a job and due to the employment situation, they underpay you. You accepted and thankful that as least, you have a job. Even at that, the pay isn’t regular, your 35000Naira monthly job and you are being owned 2months salary. Be honest within yourself, is it worth it?
That’s why I advise people, if you feel you deserve more than the input you are putting in, do something about your situation. You can either hope on God and pray things get better or seek your happiness somewhere else where you feel your input will be appreciated

Personal Story:
My uncle died in 2012. He loved Nigeria. He believed so much. He had the opportunity to leave naija years ago but he stayed back. worked in a federal establishment, didn't take bribes, believe Nigeria will have stable electricity. they posted him to remote area cos his other colleagues believed he is blocking their "runs" due to his "no bribe" stand. He was forcefully retired by the FG in 2007. His gratuity or pension wasn't paid till 2011. He got broke, no money. he was sick and depressed and that most likely contributed to his death. and Guess what, Nigeria still has no stable Electricity. So it means throughout his entire life, He probably spent a quarter of it without electricity.

YES!!!, please join. It is just a google search away.

I just googled it: http://aaahq.org/About
The American Accounting Association is the largest community of accountants in academia. Founded in 1916, we have a rich and reputable history built on leading-edge research and publications. The diversity of our membership creates a fertile environment for collaboration and innovation. Collectively, we shape the future of accounting through teaching, research and a powerful network, ensuring our position as thought leaders in accounting.

Also from their website: http://aaahq.org/Membership
From fewer than 100 accounting professors in 1916, AAA has grown to over 7,000 members in more than 75 countries. AAA's many resources serve you as a scholar, educator, or practitioner. Above all, AAA membership brings you networking opportunities with colleagues from around the world, plus exciting new initiatives. Join or renew your membership today!

I will advise students and Professional Nigerians to join reputable organizations. You get to know the exams you need to write to work in other countries, requirements, schools, classified job adverts etc. And you get invited to meetings and events all over the world.

I presently don't work in my professional field here in the US. But i am working on that. The opportunities are there and i won't let anything stop me.

I have another interview on Monday. hopefully i get something sooner than later. I still have lots of classes and exams to take here. I do believe part of what is restricting me is being on a Visa. Most employers don't wanna get involved with the Visa thing. Sometimes, i think about it. get depressed, i wanna cry but Lady K always reassure me things will be better. That has kept me going.

In the spirit of being transparent, i wanna talk about what i currently do.

Let's title it MY HUSTLE STORY!!!

I work two jobs currently (i want to limit it to 1 or find another but the 2nd one is part of my J1 visa requirement).

i work Labor for a Man (lets call him Guy M). Guy M owns a company. it is a one man company. No structure, no office, no other employer. Just Guy M and his trucks and dogs.

Guy M has a friend ( lets call him Guy R). Guy M used to sleep with Guy R sister and that is how they met (he told me himself and let me swear not to tell guy R grin grin)

Guy M's company does oil tank remover (heating oil for resident buildings) Both friends work together. One day he posted a job on craiglist about needing Labor for the day and he will pay cash. it was my day off and i was on craiglist searching for cheap phone (my screen broke). I somehow check the job section and saw his posting. i responded cos it wasn't too far from my place and also cos the hours was short (labor from 8-11pm)
i worked for him that day and he paid me cash (80$ cool cash). He then informed me they need someone everyday cos they work everyday and the guy that works labor for them is unserious and a druggie. I have been working for him since then for 2 months now. We work everyday cos they are so busy.
He pays cash after each job. He says he is just one man business, no formal employment. just work, get paid and go. His clients pays him cash too or cheque. He doesn't do credit card payment (he is so old school)

Op i want to ask you something,i'm a student in Nigeria due to graduate next year. My question is;is there possible of a US citizen not related to me to finance my immigrant visa to the US because there's one who promised me that because of my altitude and the way we interact. Secondly;can i work in the US without going for NYSC here because i don't think i can wait for that. Thanks

My 2nd job, i work as a Prep cook. (cut onions, tomatoes, garlic, vegetables, make sushi etc).

I used to get enough hours before. but My manager is showing bias (i don''t wanna call him racist cos he used to be a nice guy. i don't know what happened). He gives all hours and overtime away to others (white students from europe) but wont give me. Then cut down my hours. He then switch me to evenings. If i don't get enough hours, i dont make enough money, If i don't make enough money, i can't pay my tuition balance.

We get paid every two weeks. (copy of my last paycheck.)

We move it into our truck. Drive to the Junk yard. Sell it to them and drive back to Guy M's place. We pack the sludge into smaller bags to be disposed. That's all the job entails. I get my 80$. i drive home, take a shower, eat and wait to go for my 2nd job. Everyone is happy.

by Saturday (today being Saturday, i am heading to the bank), i take all my payments and deposit it into my account.

Sometimes, clients for tank remover cancel on us. Guy M text me early in the morning or late at night about not having to work the next day.

(attached pic is 440USD. Paid $50 for the marriage license and & $70 for Lady K's ring grin)
