giles14: One of the many reasons why we advocate education. Cocoa is not an indigenous crop to Nigeria or Africa. Just like cassava it was brought from South America and only became a significant commercial export in the last 100 years. At any rate the market for cocoa is a relatively new one too. At the tme of this report what was the worldwide production or consuption? If you had any education you would either know or be able to research this. If you can read and comprehend then study the report,it is quite self explanatory. The people who produce palm oil are not those who benefit from it the most but those who know what to do with it. You can produce a million tonnes of cotton but when Guccci takes 100 grammes he makes it into a shirt and sells it for $200. That is Lagos Lagos is a value addition centre it does not have to grow anything. Just the location as the report illustrates is enough. Have a look at the Customs duties and port revenues.,the fact that there was electricity, telephones etc before 1900. That gives you perspective on how far ahead of the rest Lagos has been. So do not talk about 0il money which came on in the 1970s Lagos has been the primary port in Nigeria for ever and it was not developed into a port by Nigeria or to put down other ports. It has been and will remain the principal sea port for the region. There are examples everywhere of such cities. Singapore ,London New York etc. Lagos is what it is becauuse of where it is .So when you start saying give us a viable port in Onitsha I say go and quarrel with God. Why was Calabar or Port Harcourt not developed as a principal sea port in 1900 Now,if ever you went to any school you would know that Lagos and the East or North as colonial spaces were administered and governed totally separately. There are actually similar reports to thisone for those places soyou can search for them. They are online and even on Nairaland we have debated them. The point here is about the Port of Lagos. It was thriving long before Nigeria was created in 1914 The report shows the ccounts of theColonial government so we can see how it got its funding nd wether or not it was subsidized or self sustaining The report iss NOT FOR ILLITERATES 90 Likes 7 Shares |

No doubt Lagos is a blessing to the south west and Nigeria as a whole.... Considering her wonderful geographical location and awesome weather... But we have to thank the politicians for sabotaging all other ports in the country and making sure that all the headquarters of major oil companies are located in Lagos... With such revenues... Eko Atlantic City is not a dream but a reality Don't forget that dangote refinery is in the pipeline... All the crude from Niger delta will head to Lagos .. Thanks again to the politicians for making sure that non of the refineries are working at an optimum level Eko ni baje 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Afonjas and their tomfoolery; who is dragging Lagos with you? The fact is Niger Delta oil money, selection of Lagos as Capital Territory, and taxes and duties paid by Nigerians made Lagos what it's today. As Dokubo Asari said...Lagos will be nothing without Niger Delta oil money and monopolization of seaports and airport. If they should open Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri, Onne and Onitsha seaports and riverport, as well as Enugu, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Asaba and Uyo airports to full and complete international status( in deeds not in words...without interference by federal government), LAGOS WILL GO BANKRUPT. BTW, do you know how much I paid in taxes last week for my business in Lagos? If you know, you will lie down and thank me for supporting Lagos, and in turn, that money used to pay yorubaa civil servants, your father and mother included. So thank us for supporting you people if not hunger for done finish una. SMH 32 Likes 5 Shares |

devindevin2000: Why did they not open them as ports in 1898 In 1898 there was no Nigeria. Those other places were separate Colonies under ANOTHER British Governor General who produced reports just like this one. So How were those places doing in 1898? Not viable Why is the ugly woman unmarried? Why did they not SELECT Onitsha as capital? What this report shows is how Lagos was way ahead of all of you even before 1914 when Nigerria was created and long before the oil boom of the 1970s 60 Likes 5 Shares |

aribisala0: Typical dumb afonja. We are saying, take your Lagos, and let us separate, Oduo Republic on one side, and Biafraa on another, let see what will happen. You people will not agree despite WE SAYING....TAKE THE LAGOS, AND EVERYTHING WE HAVE INVESTED IN IT; TAKE IT AND GO. But you will not agree because you know you need other Nigerians in Lagos to survive. 8 Likes 1 Share |

The funny thing is how ignorant many of these dunces are .In1898 > The Colony of Lagos was merged with Southern Nigeria in 1906. The resultant entity was merged with Northern Nigeria in 1914. So at the time of this report . Lagos was separate from the East. There were other reports for the Southern protectorate which excluded te Colony of Lagos .You can look for them. Fact is Lagos as an international seaport predates Nigeria and was not built with Nigerian money 44 Likes 4 Shares |

giles14:Cocoa is not an Indigenous African crop. Cocoa was brought by Europeans from South America because of the similar weather not only to Nigeria but Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire this was later and farmers only responded to external demand by cultivating more land with it. At the time of this report cocoa was not a significant cash crop. Cassava too was brought by Europeans from the same place much earrlier and was cultivated more because people could eat it but had little local use for cocoa The greater significance of the report here is the Customs and port revenues that Lagos was generating 15 Likes 1 Share |

Back to topic. Customs was generating £180000 which is the equivalent of £1620000 or 8.1 billion Naira in today's money. bear in mind that this was in the earliest days of that port. The point is the Port as a cash cow long before Nigeria existed so do not tell me it was built with Nigerian money 27 Likes 2 Shares |
