Java Programmer Needs Help by theManOfGod(m): 9:03pm On Oct 27, 2017 |
Senior Java programmers, I'm a newbie Java programmer and I have been learning with Bucky Roberts video tutorials. I also use O'Reillys Head First Java book. I am done watching the video tutorials. I need advice on what to do next. Tutorials, Coding exercises suitable for beginners and other things are welcome. |

theManOfGod:solve all the exercises in head first. if it has no exercises, get a copy of deitel's Java how to program, they shoud be enough exercises there to keep you busyfor years. Do as manyas you can. 1 Like |

asalimpo: You always give the worst advice, don't you? . For how long will he keep solving hypothetical problems that add zero value to anybody? Those dumb exercises do not accelerate his hands on technical knowhow in any way whatsoever. What you can do to help him--if you have genuine intentions to--is to send him real life projects you're working on or will work on. That's how people learn things that will be beneficial to them, realistically. That's how you get peeps prepared for employment opportunities and independence/guruship. Collaborate and appraise his code, send him your code so he reads and learns what good code/best practice looks like. Do you even know when they wrote that Head first Java? Book that the first edition was published on tablets because paper hadn't been invented yet My dear, OP needs field experience, not puzzles. He's not trying to assert an inflated IQ adept at critical thinking. And you OP, PM the asalimpo dude so he can cc his current projects to you to kick off your apprenticeship at the feet of the master asalimpo can I PM too?? 1 Like |

Nmeri17: Thanks for the advice. You seem to me like an expert too and I would love to connect with you. |
Re: Java Programmer Needs Help by asalimpo(m): 10:08pm On Oct 28, 2017 |
Nmeri17:You seem to be all mouth and no body. No brains in your reply. Op, those books are written to guide noobs from nothing to intermediate levels. Solve as many exercises there as you can. You are not the first to be self taught and not the first to learn by reading books. Anyone disparaging the exercises because of the date they were written is drunk with cluelessness. It's like thrashing a math text book because it was published 10 years ago. concepts dont change. |

^^^ E pain ya?? Awwww.... Pele mon Cherie Not my fault that you're struggling with comprehension of English grammar o. *in the wisdom-laden words of The Joker* WHY SO SERIOUS??!!! Loosen up dog. Anyone disparaging the exercises because of the date they were written is drunk with cluelessness. Yes, you did reply me but in truth, your shot was fired far off the mark. Now, do yourself a favour and reread my first post before rabidly quoting me. Rein in the eagerness to show off the new words you just picked up and read it until you are capable of deriving its message thereof. Swallow your pride and hire a private tutor if need be. Let him/she guide you as you study that post, in your long journey to escape encroaching ignorance, no offence. |

^^^ This is exactly why I told OP to desist wasting his time on redundant exercises and brainteasers. Exercises ask you to build GPA calculators even your retail store mom won't use. She can't use it not because she hates you but because it's practically useless! You need to productively try your hands on real life projects. But since you have no experience yet (and can't score any jobs yet) mail our senior programmer in the house, Asalimpo the Lout (or any mainstream Java guys you know i.e fulaman198 , talk2hb1 etc), so they share their workload with you and you grow from there. Then after a couple years, when you're balling big and living large on a fancy island off the proceeds of some offshore Java coy placement with a juicy take-home, come back to these lowly neighborhoods and worship me for giving you the advice that turned your life around. |

What works for one person might not work for the other. Personally I don't like to read volumes, so I watch video tutorial and as soon as I get the basics, I start a project, the more complex the better. As I face problemswith the project, I search for solutions online mostly on stackoverflow website. When am done with the project I find out am very confident and good in that language. When I learnt my first language, php , I watched and followed the entire lynda tutorial but in subsequent languages, I just watch a few tutorial to get me started and dive right in. |

Nmeri17: This guy is clearly jobless. Op,if you can't work the boring exercises in a text book because some1 here adviced u otherwise, then just forget about programming. Every exciting project you see built or that will ever be built has very dead boring aspects. Yet some1 slugged thru it to do it. 2) As a noob, you have no idea what will constitute a good project to work on until, you have gained some hands on experience. You cannot gauge the complexity of some of your project ideas until you've also gained some hands on experience. So for executing a project idea right off the bat of your own thinking, forget it. Just do what the books give you, as you grow and learn, and gain experience, you'll begin having original project ideas of your own which will become your new exercises but the road to that was solving some teacher's boring dry exercises for years. Note it will take you years b4 you can code decently. And more years before you can create professional level products. If you are arguing about whether to do textbook exercises or not at this stage, then programming may not even be for you. You shud be happy to have an opportunity to attempt anything to hone ur programming chps. Remember, you are years from writing even decent software. Forget that your code works,at this stage, working code and robust code are two different things. 3) How did other self taught programmers learn? They did the boring exercises that made their eyes water as if they were peeling onions. They kept practicing until they got good at it. You wont be the first self taught and you wont be the last. |

Thank you all for your advice. I have completed the GPA calculator and have started practising exercises from "Java How To Program" and "Big Java". If you have any other thing to add, I wouldn't mind. |

theManOfGod: As a noob that you are, I'll advise you to listen to Asalimpo. You cannot face real-life problems by just watching The New Boston's (Bucky Roberts) 87 Java videos. I have all the videos too, they are not in-depth. Bucky only introduced the concepts so you may read more on them. Read and solve more until you become an intermediate in the language. More power to your elbow. |
