Nigeria did not take part in the 1996 AFCON. The 1998 WC qualifiers were not on as at summer of 1996. So even if a couple of those players played any game it could have been 1 or 2 friendlies of which I can't even remember any.

Players like Oruma, Celestine, Oparaku, Kanu, Ojigwe were even 20 or less. Compare them with players who are 20 or less in the current super Eagles.

And on Kanu, as I said before he was part of the '94 squad during camping which was when that Sweden game was played and T.J was never in the 94 squad whether on standby or not.

Taribo and tijiani were involved in friendlies in the run -up to USA 94.

As at 1995, 19years old Kanu had won the UEFA champions league with Ajax. Not as a bencher o. Nor as a player used for only 'drills' but as a starter.

But he could not break into the Super Eagles because we had Rashidi Yekini, Victor Ikpeba and Jonathan Akpoborie who were still ahead of him.
No icon4s,Kanu was a complete bench warmer at ajax in 94/95,pls go to archive and check it out.

Finidi George was a super regular at ajax and one of the strongest member not Kanu even at 95/96 Kanu could not tie a regular spot in the team coz Kluivert was ahead, though better than 94/95 season.

I followed Kanu career as an addicted fan right from 1991 when i watched him live playing for Iwanyanwu nationals,he was member of flying eagles to Mauritius 93 and later drafted to U 17 team going to Japan 93 with Emma Babayaro.

probably the Reason for the random news all over the English press reporting....Tammy ditch Nigeria for England...

Southgate To Tammy Abraham – Forget Nigeria, Assures Him Of England Chance

Coach of the senior national team of England Gareth Southgate has successfully convinced Tammy Abraham to banish the idea of representing Nigeria..
The online edition of British media outfit Times monitored by Owngoalnigeria.com Michael James has it that the coach had a meeting with 20 year old shortly after watching him in action for Swansea City in their 1-2 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates.
According to Times, Southgate assured the 20 year old that he could gatecrash his World Cup squad for England, even if he doesn’t make the next squad of England which will be released on Thursday.
Although there are other strikers ahead of Abraham in the pecking order of forwards available to coach Southgate, he however assured Abraham that one or two striking slots are up for grabs.
Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck’s poor injury record as well as Jermain Defoe who is close to 36 years old could play in his favour when Southgate releases his squad for the World Cup.

The assurances made the forward who 13 caps for England at Under-21 level and four Premier League goals from nine starts to shelve plans of switching allegiance to Nigeria despite holding talks with the President of the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) Amaju Pinnick.

I just liked the post reason been that, I do not want Tammy near the Super Eagles. We qualified without him and shall perform at the Mundial without him.
Let's shift focus to Kayode, Paul, Dressers, & co.

Yes we did not go to Afcon 96 due political issue and ban by CAF for afcon 98 for not defending the cup in 1996.

Tijani Babangida was ahead of Kanu Nwankwo in eagles but came into the scene when we have better player in Finidi George.

It was a great debate Victor Ikpeba was nearly dropped for Tijani at the last minute prior to WC but Westerhoff still took him along.

Did you know Tijani Babangida was a professional player with Roda JC before Finidi and Kanu joined Ajax.

Pls try and ask any season sport personality,i still repeat it Tijani Babangida was at US 94 but not registered.

If i may ask you did you know Osaze was at 2002 WC but not registered

While people are criticising the call of Chidiebere Nwakali, I am glad it happened and raised my respect for Rohr. Most of those criticising Chidiebere's call-up were those criticising Shehu Abdullahi's call-up because of the league he played in.

Those kind of people will have their minds wrapped in a limited bubble in understanding that good players could fall outside the top leagues. Shehu blew that notion away.

Wait for Rohr's assessment of Chidiebere Nwakali before running the struggling young man down. I believe there is a chance of us unearthing a star in Chidiebere Nwakali and I am rooting for him. Rubbing my hands as I await the reports from camp.

It seems you don't understand Kayode issue.Let me tell you little i know about his situation with national team.

The sport administrators don't want outspoken ones in the team, this is what affected Jonathan Akpoborie chances in the Eagles, the same thing James Obiorah,to some extent Wilson Oruma, even Godwin Opara, look at Enyeama scenario, the NFF w make sure they block Enyeama recalled coz they don't want him.

Did you know Enyeama/Olishe feud was a script written by NFF and Olishe acted on it,telling Olishe if you want to succeed just get rid of certain players like Enyeama,Mikel, Emenike, benching Mikel for Onobi was a script,Emenike saw the handwriting on the wall he resigned, kudos to Mikel he didn't let it bother him he carry on with the team despite the humiliation.

Kayode Olarewaju issue with football administrators started when he came out publicly to indict Taiwo Ogunjobi in his transfer brouhaha when he was in cote d voire, this confession affected Ogunjobi career as a football administrator, till today he never forgive Kayode.

Since then Kayode has been under watch of NFF,they don't want to have anything to do with him, though Ogunjobi is no longer in NFF he still waxes influence as former sec Gen.

The last invitation Kayode got against South Africa was a forceful one and i can tell you Rohr you are accusing was the one that made it possible,if it's NFF he w never be considered.I can tell u if he get another it's Rohr.

The issue has nothing to do with tribe cos Kayode's problem is Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi who happened to be his kinsman not Rohr and as i said in one of my comments that Rohr just need to listen to some people cos thet are the forces who made it possible for him to be appointed as a coach,so don't be surprised if Ogunjobi was one of the people that made Rohr appointment as a coach of Super Eagles possible.

Clemens Westerhoff got Nigeria job through Chief SB Williams and he listened to the man, some players came to national team through Kojo Williams,

I remember Stephen Keshi got his first coaching appointment with Togo through Patrick Okpomo and when he got fired the same man make sure he got him Mali job,so these people are cabal, this is the problem in Africa,a lot are happening behind the scene, not only in football, look at Maina case and the presidency.

James Obiorah made 2002 WC when he openly said national team coaches are collecting money, it was international interview and this prompted Onigbinde to force NFF to invite him,NFF dont want Obiorah in the team.He came to camp and made the team.

Think of it highest goal scorer in Austria league and even the best player last season before moving to man city and loaned to Girona in LA liga, on a good day he supposed to be in national team but forces working against him are the same forces working against Enyeama recalled.

Truly it's corruption but i just want you to know that Kayode is not victimize for being from one tribe in Nigeria cos the man behind the whole show is from the same tribe with Kayode.

Kog45 thanks for this. I sensed it regarding Enyeama that some forces don't want him in the team. As per your post on Kayode shebi I urged forgiveness to do his research and find out what the facts are rather than making wild accusations. Information is at anyone's reach if we are really serious about getting to know the facts on any issue and deploy all the tools technology has put our disposal. See even top government memos get leaked. Some it's even clerks, typists, messengers and low level staffs that leak them. Forgiveness, get across to Kayode, build trust and he will tell you what he thinks are the reasons why he's not getting invitations. Kog45 has given you some lead. Be a good investigator and find out cos I do feel pain at your pains on this Kayode issue. I am not Kayode's fan but I see he means a lot to you. So please do the needful. If not let us rest especially with the accusations.

the question should be....has aluko, ilorfa and co...gone to see rohr and tell him of their availability for the eagles..
especially ilorfa....

that will fast track the process.......better still they can patiently wait for their time....I am sure rohr is aware of their availability

I will tell you a true story without names. There was a Nigerian origin player playing in the premiership.

Yak,Yobo and Anichebe were going to camp in Abuja, I told him to follow all these guys and they will introduce him to the coach. Siasia at the time if I'm right He refused to go, saying you can't just do that, people get invited they do not demand, that's not right.

He was looking at things from a European perspective and how things are done.

Barely two years later he was invited to to camp and played some games for Nigeria.

Rohr can not do everything there will be NFF officials doing thier own to ensure things go the way they want. The NFF has not changed they can even tell lies about players if they feel it will work in thier own interest or in the interest of the players they want to push.

You need to understand they decorum and cultural in which things are done properly. It's impossible for them to contact Rohr without link up. Or shall I tell them to register thier interest on nairaland with a placard saying, Naija I love thee

How far back do you want to go and what do you mean by England bred

In a sense Yobo is an England bred player, the first club in his entire career that he started playing a defensive role was with Everton who then transformed him into a CB.

At least we have more credibility now as regards the true ages of the players.

Icon4s:

What we have above is close to what we have presently in terms of age. As over 70% of the current crop are 23 or less. And they are also established super Eagles players. Yet none would have made that 96 team starting line up. Maybe 1 or 2 would make the squad at most.

Good you made reference to Siasia's 2008 Olympics team. Trace that team back to his 2005 U20 team which was the bedrock of the 2008 Olympics team. That 2005 U20 also had class and quality. I remember repeatedly mentioning that the Siasia's 2005 Flying Eagles were better than the Manu's 2015 Flying Eagles. I got attacked for it but I still maintain my view on that.

We have to accept the fact. we hype our current team too much.

This team has achieved a lot in this qualifiers no doubt but they still have a long way to go.

My friend you are muddying the waters, the subject is best player selection by merit.

The discussion is not circumstances personal or otherwise but structure, definitive standards of measurement for the best quality players. The removal of sentiment and the enthronement of merit without question. Let the best players come in no sentiment.

People left Nigeria direct and went to French league, Belgium league, Portuguese league, Italian league. So if you find yourself in the backwaters of Europe it's nobody fault. Life is tough and unfair it's just how it is.

Under no circumstances do we circumvent standards for anybody irrespective of circumstances. One player bypassing the standards is one too many. It us unfair, unjustifiable and not right, no apologies.

If you find objective merit based selection as condescending then I have nothing to say. The EPL is the most competitive league in the World if not the best so what's wrong with the pursuit of excellence

Finally, I am probably more Nigerian conversant than you. Naija no far from me. Dont assume that I don't have am indepth understanding and empathy for the dynamics and struggles in Nigeria. I still can leave Ocean view drive to Okirigwe jnct and eat starch and owo with my hands.

I just will not compromise my integrity, if that makes me Un-Nigerain in your book. Once again no apology.

please i'll really like you to list the best players that should be selected and is eligible to play for the Algeria and Argentina match coming uo in the next 12 days that were not called up

Some have been saying the EPL is over rated.

Tottenham flogging Real Madrid away and at home is not ewah and dodo.

For England youths to win both the U17 and U20 world cups is a sign of quality. Things have changed we have lots of teenagers playing top flight football.

For goodness sake the second most expensive player in the entire history of football is a teenager.

When last did any English club or national team win an European trophy?. Don't come and mention England U20 or U17 here beacuase senior football is the real soccer. I'm waiting foe your answer.

When last did an English Premier League player win an European Golden Boot?

Be honest, is Real Madrid in form curently? Even a lowly Girona FC handed them a defeat so what are you sayin??

We are a sentimental nation. So things like this are always bound to happen.
It doesn't stop the coach from pressing for who he really wants.

You hit the nail squarely on the head right there! I think our coaches are intimidated by the big players, so they tend to use this passive aggressive crap to maintain management control.

The second reason is that these coaches - from Keshi to Siasia down to Oliseh - are player agents. Sometimes they invite these players purely for business reasons, if you know what I mean.

O pari

Icon4s:

You now see why Oliseh failed?

Meanwhile players like Leone Balogun, Mikel Obi and Victor Moses were available for selection. That was my major headache with Oliseh and Keshi. For one flimsy reason they will be having issues with big players and then dropping them for some home based players probably just to spite the big players.

Go and look at the list with which we played Tanzania in Dar es Salam enroute qualification for the 2017 AFCON and you will see why we did not make the AFCON. That draw in Dar es Salam really blew up our chances.

Ghana will host the next Awards Gala

This year.aitoe a Nigerian oil company is sponsoring the award, we have some one in the position of pinnick. .then the hosting will be done in our own backyard. ..let me watch and see how they I'll come and clinch the title again angry...

Big Joe, you gotta be smarter than that. You gotta take everything (and I mean everything) you read here with a big dose of salt.

From everything I know, Kayode isn't making the Super Eagles team purely for football reasons. Having watched him a couple of times, there's no doubt in my mind that Simon, Kelechi, Ighalo, Onyekuru, and VicMo are better. Forget what he did in Austria, let him replicate that form in La Liga. Like we say in football, the name of the game is, "What have you done for me lately".

Abeg, let us move on to players that have us in mind, I am tired of discussing all these useless English boys.

And please, nobody should blame Pinnick for anything. Nobody should also say the English FA would have held down his career. Last I checked, England is not the only country that has a good league, and if he was that great, he would have shone in other leagues even if England tried to stifle his career.

Forget pressure or any other nonsense excuse, this boy had England on his mind and used the Pinnick ish to bring attention to himself. If Nigeria had been his top choice at any point, he would have shunned their pressure like Iwobi did.

Good luck to Tammy, now, can we go back to our back water Norwegian league players?

please, can we stop giving this boy free airtime here? I thought we have wished him good luck with his English dreams already

Victor Moses will win it! He lifted the EPL trophy last season and this is only based on last season. If this season was included Messi would have won Ronaldo looking at form this season. What did Salah do last season? Even mane? Going to world cup qualification based on last year, Moses performed better assisting and scoring goals. My 2cent
What about Aubameyang?

whether he regrets it or not is no my business, they can even take him to Russia, he can sit on the bench and watch England being kicked out in the Round of 16

My own is that, we should stop discussing his matter here. He is not our problem

The full squad is set to be announced at 2pm, but the Football Association's Twitter account released a teaser an hour before congratulating the three youngsters on their promotion from the Under 21s.

Tammy Abraham has been named as part of Gareth Southgate's latest England squad.

Joe Gomez has enjoyed regular action for Liverpool in both the league and Champions League and has been rewarded for a string of solid performances with his first full international call-up.

Another Chelsea loanee, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, has been gaining valuable experience under former Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace, and he too is called up for the first time.

Abraham was part of Aidy Boothroyd's Under-21 side that reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in the summer, where they lost on penalties to Germany.

which chance? You sef, you don't know how the English team operates.

Tammy is not as good as Dele Alli, shey you know? So, which chance will he stand?

Vardy is old, is Harry Kane old? Is Rashford old too? His only chance will be if those two get injured during the World Cup....Vardy will even get a sub role before Tammy.

He no dey even stand as it is
