Please mamas.
Who has experience with a baby with jaundice.
Our newborn has it, to think I saw it 2 days ago but since both parents don't have clear white eyes, I felt it was inherited not till yesterday when the corners of the cornea was way darker than the rest. His gums also turned yellow this morning. We took him to the hospital early this morning and have done test (he measured 17) and now he is on admission.
I feel so terrible that I waited this long.

How long do babies with jaundice have to stay in the hospital?
Is jaundice a result of infection? cos that's what the doctor told them (she didn't allow me in). I don't believe so cos this baby is just 5 days old and only a handful of people have carried him. Pikin wey just dey sleep dey go.

#RANT#

As nursing mothers, has any1 ever forgotten food on fire till it got burnt?

Have you ever forgotten to regfrigerate or put that food in the freezer till it got spoilt?

Have you ever forgotten to cook that "little" food(say white okro or ewedu) till it dried away?

Have you ever forgotten to make that call or reply an sms?

The list is endless...

I'm asking these questions because i keep wondering if i'm not a waster(in this buhari time)!
I dont intend to nbe one but motherhood has done all these to me ooo...!

Hubby complains initially but now,he sees and understand why its always so... Even though he still gives me#side eyes# sometimes...

I feel like im missing out in all these, trying to combine motherhood and "wifehood"... lol

As i am now,im sooo exhausted!

I feel like crying...

How did our mothers did it?! My momm had six of us...

Sometimes,i just feel like i cant...

God help your daughter naw...
This is my new life.

Maybe the baby got it from breastmilk. There is breastmilk jaundice.

Jaundice isn't caused by an infection, it's just one of those things with babies.. U can google.
I had an experience with Zara but luckily the level didn't get to 10 else they wouldn't have discharged us, it kept hovering around 9 till it disappeared totally.

Since the level is at 17, the baby should be admitted and undergoing phototherapy by now.. If the level still doesn't go down, they may have to do a blood transfusion for the baby.
The major thing the mum needs now is to keep breastfeeding the baby so he/she can poop & pee it all out.
They'll most likely discharge them if the level steps down to any value below 10, then she can go home with baby and do early morning sun to kill it off finally.

Pele... Baby will be fine soon

Continuous breastfeeding. Unripe pawpaw soaked in water. Drops should be given to the baby and the mother should drink a cup of it at regular intervals so that baby can take from her. This is what i did when my baby's level was 10 although that is not considered high. Please insist they check the baby's bilirubin levels everyday. Learnt from a doctor in Outreach hospital that it's necessary as some bilirubin don't respond adequately to the blue light (I no remember the medical name) and that most times before the doctors realise, it may have affected the child's brain. A bilirubin level that has fallen to 7 is considered normal.

Don't know about jaundice being caused by infection but I was told that non tratement/inadequate treatment of malaria in pregnancy can cause it. Also, all babies are born with a high level of bilirubin as it takes about 10 to 14days for their liver to catch up with filtering it.

Its not infection: if i remember the explanation i was given properly..

All the time in the womb the placenta and mothers body processes any red blood cell breakdwown and sometimes the baby's liver which that processes broken down red blood cells takes a while to kick in as it is not fully developed in newborns

You’ve taken the right step by taking him to the hospital. Mine also had severe jaundice like that. We stayed in the hospital for three weeks. But eventually it will clear up. And no, it’s not due to infection. At least mine wasn’t. It was due to ABO incompatibility. I’m O+, hubby is B+ and baby is B+ too. Blood crossed from placenta to him when he was in-vitro but my liver was doing the filtering for him then. When he was born, his Liver was too tender to take over and the bilirubin built up. Hence the jaundice.

Let me look for my post on the issue and I’ll tag you.

Nope. A baby with bilirubin levels as high as that cannot be treated with methods you just said ooo. At this point it’s very dangerous and can affect the brain (making it yellow) the best bet is to let the hospital treat it.

And no. It’s not always caused by malaria. We don’t have malaria where I live and my baby’s bilirubin level was almost 18 as at day 2 of his life.

Here..

MamaOO:

Please please please. I implore all mothers here to insist on a jaundice test for our babies before leaving the hospital to avoid stories that touch. I wanted to share my experience with neonatal jaundice after Liftedhands mentioned her niece's case, but I decided to wait till all of it has passed so that I don't jinx myself....Lol, I know I know, I'm African like that.

Mamas, please, let us always insist on the hospital we birth type baby's blood after birth, compare it to mothers own and then carry out a jaundice test before we get discharged from the hospital. Here is my experience, It was only God that saved us. And thankfully now, everything is behind us. After baby E.J's birth, he was sleepy and lethargic and would not eat. I noticed his eyes were a bit yellow but wasn't too worried. The next day, the yellow was very pronounced and I mentioned it to my mother in law. His pediatrician came and ordered bloodwork and there it was discovered that his bilirubin level was 17!!! Jeez!

Immediately the staff swung into action. He was wheeled into the NICU. 7 bilirubin lights were placed on him and also a bili blanket was placed underneath him. His cord was completely cut off and tubes put in. When I asked why, they said it was because he might need an exchange blood transfusion and they needed to be ready. That was when they told me he would need to be transferred to Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, cos they can't handle the transfusion at the hospital where he was born oo. I nearly cried blood. My baby was sick and I can't do nothing. The doctor called the other hospital and in 50 minutes they were here, they flew in with an air ambulance. My child had to be airlifted the children's hospital. We drove after them and went to meet them there

Give it to American hospitals, before we got to the hospital, treatment was already ongoing. He was placed on bilirubin lights and a bilirubin blanket and had already received a dose of IVIg. They also inserted a feeding tube in his nose. That sight is something I'll never forget. This is my child, barely 24 hours old and already going through this. They were testing his bilirubin levels every 4 hours. And by the next day, his level had reduced to 14 or 15. It continued decreasing everyday and gradually they began to remove the lights until they removed it all. He started eating and became more and more awake and alert and playful. He even removed the feeding tube in his nose three times. Thank God!

We spent almost 2 weeks in the hospital and I do not wish that experience on my enemy. It was especially tough cos I had to leave my newborn in the NICU while I go to my hotel room to sleep, I so much wanted to hold him and bond with him but I couldn't. So mothers, please always insist on a bilirubin test for your newborns. I also got to know what caused him to have so much bilirubin in him. It was because of something called ABO incompatibility. You see, I'm blood group O+ and hubby is B+. E.J got his Dad's B+ and while he was inside of me, his blood crossed through into my bloodstream. Anybody with blood type O+ or O- reacts in a certain way when other blood types are introduced into their bloodstream. They begin to develop antibodies to attack the presumed foreign blood group which in this scenario was my baby's blood. So while he was in-vitro, he was fine. The moment he was born, my antibodies in him started breaking down his red blood cells which caused his severe jaundice. And because his liver was so young, it could not keep up with filtering out the bilirubin.

Thank God he was diagnosed and treated fast and in a timely and aggressive manner. He received tons of phototherapy and 3 doses of IVIg. God bless America Mehn, cos I am pretty sure the story would have been different if this was Nigeria.

Yes, that's what the doctor told me when he tested my baby's Bilirubin level when she was 6days old cos her eyes was getting yellow. He said it was breastmilk jaundice. So we did back to back breastfeeding and the early morning sunlight and it cleared off. Initially I also thought she took the colour of her dad's eyes cos it's not white like mine so it's not your fault that you didn't get to know early enough. Don't worry the baby will be fine. God's healing hands is upon the child.

@spiceeaimee jaundice isn't caused by malaria during pregnancy. I never had malaria all thru pregnancy, and I completed my compulsory malaria dose during pregnancy but Zara still had jaundice.

The hospital I use starts testing for jaundice from 48hours after birth, the blood work is done for 3 days and the results determine how soon or not u will be discharged post-delivery.
We spent 8 days in hospital before we were discharged. A lady in my ward whose baby had severe jaundice (the levels got to 19, and the baby had 2 blood transfusions + plenty phototherapy) spent close to 2weeks in hospital.

I was told that malaria in pregnancy (left untreated) or not taking your malaria drugs during pregnancy may be an indicator. It's not infection, I'll snap my notes during antenatal class and forward to you now. Solution now is phototherapy and constant checking. If it doesn't drop they will transfuse. In my hospital, you have to come on day 3 then day 7 or so to check. They don't even wait for you to notice at home

Hello every1. Trust we r all good.

Ok,i noticed that my ds(25months)has not been eating well only for me to check his mouth and i saw a whitish spot with a red circle on his lower, inner lip and also running temp. So i started using warm water/salt with cotton wool to clean d place & giving him ibrupofen syrup. But there was no improvement at all bcus he refused eatng nor taking even water!

We took him to the hospoital on sun night cus d temp got so so high that even tepid-sponging did nada! He was given antibiotics, vit c & ibrupofen.

Yesterday,i noticed ders another white patch on his left tip of tongue, omg! I pity d boy o! He cnt evn take water without crying... He really wants to eat but the thot of d pains when food enters his mouth, makes him withdraw!

Just this afternoon,i saw a bigger patch with about 3tiny ones around it on d right edge of his tongue! God,wat is this ooo! He cant even close his mouth! He has lost so much weight from friday evening.

The antibiotics mks him poop alot but i have to continue giving him...

What could have caused the white patches. I learnt its an infection!

Is there anything else i can use to hasten the healing I'm so so so worried for him...

It's a viral infection. It will stop on its own, most often than none, the tonsils are equally enlarge causing difficulty in swallowing. In my DS case, his gums were swollen and bleeding too. Just continue with the ibuprofen for pain relief and temp control, vit c for improved immunity and of course the antibiotics to prevent secondary infection. Sorry o! Max 1wk, it will be over. Give more of liquid/ semi solid foods like cerealac, goldenmorn, pap etc.
