Has anyone here cultivated this variety of tomatoes before? I got it from a friend and want to know the pros and cons of cultivating it. See photos.

That is a kind of Roma tomato, which is “a plum tomato popularly used both for canning and producing tomato paste because of their slender and firm nature.” This kind of tomato is classified as a “Hausa tomato” in Nigeria because it’s commonly grown in the north. “Hausa tomatoes” are considered to be the best tomatoes for making Nigerian stews. The most commonly grown Roma tomatoes in Nigeria are the Roma VF, which is resistant to two wilt diseases and available from Premier Seeds, and the Roma VFN, which is also resistant to nematodes and available from Jumia and Shoprite. To grow this kind of tomato in Southern Nigeria may not be so easy except during the dry season or under a rain shelter e.g. a greenhouse, unless you spray them with a fungicide regularly, because they tend to develop fungal diseases and other problems when it rains a lot. I’m trying to grow Roma VFN in my tiny garden, so I guess I’ll have more to say in the future. 2 Likes 1 Share |

iamclime:That is what the local farmer cultivate in my area but it only command gud premium during scarcity period atimes they take it back home when there is surplusity people prefer tomato with round shape e.g uc82b and many hybrid tomatoes i would rather advise you to go for cobra26 f1 of technisem because 1.it doesnt turn watery during raining season unlike uc82b 2. It command gud price 3. It has ionger shelflife 4.one stand can bear at least 30fruit CLUE. After transplanting u should spray it with mancozeb/metalazy fungicide+insecticide once in a week and regular weeding.God bless |

This is a tasty sort of tomatoes. I love it more than other species and I plant it for many years. The first time when I tried to plant the tomatoes was a failure and all the tomatoes didn't look good and weren't tasty at all. I read many articles about it and one of them was https://dengarden.com/gardening/How-Deep-Do-Tomato-Roots-Grow, where I found the best answers to my questions. This year, I managed it because all my tomatoes are big, look good, and are very tasty. |
