1. Sellers are not stupid. You see a tokumbor car for 2m and same nigerian used for 500k, this should raise a red flag, unless by devine intervention, or if a nissan is involved  , deals like this are almost impossible.Do not jump at cheap prices. 17 Likes 1 Share |

Evaluate vehicle into sections, and rate accordingly. Engine Transmission. Body Paint work Under body Suspension Interior Electronics Airconditioning. E.G Engine - ok Transmission- ok Body- minor dents on doors and fenders. Paint work ok (first body) Underbody- extreem cases of rust Suspension- ok Interior- clean Electronics- ok Airconditioning ok. I actually jumped this step, it is very important before going to inspect a vehicle, it narrows down the decision making. Background research on availability/Price of parts. Kia rio 2013. 1.6liter engine bought brand new, mileage 80,000km used by a banker You see a topic like this and you jump at it  This particular vehicle is prone to 2 problems. A failing cooling Fan Harness, this causes the Fans to fail, and the engine to overheat. Also Front impact causes the radiator's expansion tank to come into contact with the compressor, most users do no realize on time and after driving a few weeks overheating occurs. Engine is made of aluminium (top and bottom) severe overheating and it begins to rattle, smoke and does not do very well with rebuilds. Price Tag of engine N600,000 (tokumbor) The second problem associated with this same type of vehicle is its air conditioning. The compressors Fail at about 40-50,000km, Most technicians are scared of putting the factory spec setup, and use manual compressors, this causes premature belt wear, engine drag, and messy wiring. Cost of toks compressor N60,000 New compressor N150,000 Next example Toyota camry 2007-2009 V6. Major issue to look out for Failing transmission Cost of TOKs N550,000 Another popular example Honda accord 2003-2007 V6 Major issue to look out for, Failing transmission. Note the problems associated with transmission failure on most cars are easily avoidable if proper preventive maintenance is carried out and driving habits are normal. So basically before buying any car, do a small research into the cost of its most expensive parts, ensure you verify that the Vehicle you are about to buy does not have those issues, and if it does, factor it into the cost of vehicle, then weigh your options, Does it fit your budget after paying for parts and labour? The best buys are from users and Not Cardealers. Cardealers are wired to say Vehicle is in perfect condition Even if a problem is glaring. Sadly Most Car dealers Have very little defect history of the Cars they advertise.This is how it plays out most times. Car advert By Car dealer A. Note he might have never seen vehicle, but just relied on info from seller , or another cardealer B. When its time for a sale, You contact Mr A, you go to location and thats when Both of you (you and cardealer) realize car is lemonade . To save face Cardealer A insists nothing is wrong with Car, to make a sale cardealer B insists nothing is wrong with car what plays out next is either you assume they are right and you pay for car.  Buying a car from user makes more sense, most time it is his every day vehicle, engine is not washed, so you can see any glaring oil leaks, you can ask questions and might be able to get sincere answers, no middle man involved so you also get best prices. Beware of electrical issues. There is nothing as frustrating as a vehicle with electrical issues. A rattling engine, faulty tranmission, noisy suspension etc can be replaced in 1day, But electrical issues might take a life time  When you intend buying a nigerian used car and you open the bonnet only to see funny wires flying upandan, if you are a first time buyer, or not a mechanic (like me) jejely close the bonnet and walk away, you really dont want to get involved, unless you are the adventurous type. 45 Likes 4 Shares |

Regional brands and Mechanics. Opel vehicles are not very common in the south south, you might find only a handful in. The south-east But enter Kano, abuja, jos bauchi Gombe They are all over the place and are used commercially. Do not buy a cheap mechanically sound car, only to find out you will Have to place order from a different state and wait a couple of days for parts as simple as brakepads, water pumps, struts, exhaust parts, starter motor alternator..... It can be very frustrating. It is worse when there is only 1 mech in that town that fixes that model, his shakara might be plenty  Note: Not every one is technically and can hold spanner, There are some who prefer to watch while others fix. engines and sludge. There have been times when I inspected vehicles, they ran well and engines were smooth, no smoke, no rattles, but sadly the engines were filled with a lot of sludge. What is sludge. Engine with sludge  Engine without sludge  Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Oil sludge can be a major contributor to internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. When the vehicle you are about to buy has fans wired directly, thermostat removed, and owner uses 20W50. The chances are that engine is sludge filled. To verify open oil refill cover, and with a flashlight peep into the valve cover area. If it is dark and greasy you know what you are getting into, so factor it into long term cost. If it is clean, lucky you. You can also judge from the oil dipstick, vehicle owners that do not pay attention to oil changes always have very dark stained dipsticks. 20 Likes 1 Share |
