Well the text book recommends a 100m spacing but troops hardly adhere to this for one chief reason which is reducing the risk of convoys been breached especially with VBIED been driven into security convoys.
My opinion : some of these text book manuals don't apply to current scenarios today. That's why doctrine must always be reviewed in line with present and past operations.

No sane person would argue with this. Indeed, this is the discussion I had in mind when I posted my original comment. Actually, our field manuals stress various levels of spacing depending on the circumstance: the absolute minimum in known adverse terrain being 35m.
Civilians who probably have never fired even a BB gun came into it with their expert opinion.

That said, I don't understand how you rationalise lessening the 100m spacing/bunching up as a response to VBIEDs. Instead of one APC, surely the scum now have several? And before you say the concentrated firepower from several APCs will disable the VBIED, look to Syria and Iraq where the ISIS savages disabused the Iraqi and Syrian armies of that notion - against Russian Iranian advice, may I add.

Hell, don't go that far. The EU partners to the UN mission in Mali complain that the unacceptably high casualty rate in convoy ambushes is mostly due to:
1) the UN sticking to its unvarying schedule which grants all the initiative to the belligerents (a familiar problem we had in Darfur);
2) poor convoy doctrine in Minusma.

Many more reasons but those are the top 2, which suffice for our current discussion.
