I ran out of luck. After updating to miui9 stable and factory resetting my phone note 4x. I can't use earpiece of any kind with it. Earpiece no more recognised. So sad. Hope xiaomi will look at the issue.

You can try poweramp or black player.
If what you meant is that the music stops playing after a while in the background, then it's as a result of miui optimisation, it kills apps running in the background after sometime to save ram. You can either turn off miui optimisation for the player or lock it while in use, let's hear from your end .

After updating its normally advisable (not compulsory) to do a factory reset, just incase there are one or two bugs. Another way (I prefer this, because it saves me the stress of backing up and transferring +installing my data back to my phone) is to download the rom manually and keep a copy of it. You'll need the copy to reflash the rom in case you encounter bugs. This method ensures you don't waste data in re-downloading the rom.
