AF Nigeria 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers - Africa Nigeria Henry Onyekuru eyeing first full international for Nigeria Dani Alves (L) of Paris Saint-Germain in action against Henry Onyekuru (R) of Anderlecht during the UEFA Champions League group B soccer match between RSC Anderlecht and Paris Saint-Germain at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Anderlecht, near Brussels, Belgium, 18 October 2017. EPA/STEPHANIE LECOCQ by Phumzile Ngcatshe Nigerian international striker, Henry Onyekuru is delighted to have an opportunity to make his debut for the Super Eagles. The 20-year-old is looking forward to his first official appearance for the West Africans as they prepare to face the Desert Warriors of Algeria on Friday in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Onyekuru expressed his delight on Twitter after the RSC Anderlecht (on loan from Everton) forward made his first appearance in a non-competitive game against Togo in June. He played against the Sparrow Hawks in a cameo role as the Super Eagles won 3-0, but was not been invited by coach Gernot Rohr since the outing. However, the forward has an opportunity to impess the manager ahead of the World Cup in Russia as the 2013 African champions have already secured their place after garnering 13 points from five matches in the qualifiers. “My first full international call up for the Nigeria National Team! God is great,” Onyekuru tweeted. “Blessed to be able to share this moment with these guys and we will do our best to make Nigeria proud.” africanfootball.com/news/734305/Henry-Onyekuru-eyeing-first-full-international-for-Nigeria 1 Like |

Ezenwa has been in goal since the Cameroon match. He has seen enough of the African test IMO. I want to see what he can do for at least 45 minutes against Argentina. I think we need to throw in Uzoho for Algeria. In this dead rubber, let's make some sacrifices for exposure. We are going to need one rookie goalkeeper in the World Cup. It's between Alampasu and Uzoho. At the moment Uzoho is ahead. Let's wait and see. I personally won't take Akpeyi and Ezenwa to the World cup. They both have to fight it out. For now, Ezenwa is ahead. Let Akpeyi have another half against Argentina. We already know he is kind of shaky. But let's see if he can win our confidence back against Argentina. Both have seen enough of African oppositions. Orkpekyandega: 2 Likes |

Onigbinde: Amuneke’s Al Khartoum Watani Job Big Achievement For Nigerian Football By James Agberebi: Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde has described Emmanuel Amuneke’s appointment as head coach of Sudanese first division club, Al Khartoum Watani, as a big achievement for Nigerian coaches. Amuneke was unveiled as Al Khartoum Watani’s new coach ahead of the new season after signing a two-year deal at the club. The 1994 Africa Footballer of the Year, replaces Kwesi Appiah who took over as Black Stars of Ghana head coach. Commenting on Amuneke’s appointment, Onigbinde who worked as technical consultant to Trinidad and Tobago Football Association from 1998 to 2001 said the onus is now on the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner to prove his worth. “First instance, I congratulate him,” Onigbinde told C ompletesportsnigeria.com. “And I see it as a sought of glory to Nigerian football. What is going to happen over there will depend on the type of contract he signed and how he goes about it. “I hope he will have it in mind that he is not working for himself alone, he is representing the image of Nigeria. Let’s hope he achieves great results there.” Onigbinde who led the Super Eagles to the final of the 1984 AFCON where they lost 3-1 to Cameroon, gave reasons why just a handful of Nigerian coaches are in charge of teams outside Nigeria. “The reason why we don’t have many Nigerian coaches handling teams outside Nigeria has to do with the way we run our football,” he said. “The question is, are we developing our coaches? For long I have been talking about developmental programmes.. Not only in football, but in all sports. “When I was on CAF technical committee, we decided we will grade all African coaches. Ghana has graded more than 3,000. Nigeria just graded about 500. There is a Nigerian coach who went to South Africa and was sacked because he didn’t have CAF license. So these are some of the factors. “Unfortunately, we have some coaches in Nigeria who believe they have known everything and have nothing to learn. If you are an interlligent person, you must be open to learning. So I wish Amuneke the best of luck.” www.completesportsnigeria.com/onigbinde-amunekes-al-khartoum-watani-job-big-achievement-nigerian-football/ 2 Likes |

Rohr opts for Ebuehi, Agbo, Uzoho against Algeria Festus Abu Match-starved ADO Den Haag right-back Tyronne Ebuehi, on-loan Standard Liege midfielder Uche Agbo and Hapoel Be’er Sheva forward Anthony Nwakaeme are set to step into starting roles as Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr considers fielding fringe players in Friday’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria in Constantine, our correspondent has learnt. Also in line for starting jobs in the inconsequential clash against the Desert Foxes are on-loan Hull City defender Ola Aina, young Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, on-loan Anderlecht striker Henry Onyekuru, on-loan Girona forward Olarenwaju Kayode and Norway-based midfielder Chidiebere Nwakali. The Super Eagles sealed their place at the World Cup after beating Zambia 1-0 in Uyo on October 7 to top Group B, which also houses African champions Cameroon, on 13 points. Nigeria have won four of their five qualifiers. While Kayode made his international debut in the 1-1 draw against Senegal in Corsica in March, Dutch-born Ebuehi and Onyekuru made theirs in the 3-0 defeat of Togo in a friendly affair in June. However, Agbo, Nwakaeme and Uzoho will be looking to make their international debuts in Constantine. Our correspondent learnt that Turkey-based defender Kenneth Omeruo, who got a late call-up to replace injured Trabzonspor midfielder Ogenyi Onazi, will also have a chance to force his way back into international reckoning. Rohr confirmed on Wednesday that he would make six changes to the team that defeated Chipolopolo last month. The 64-year-old former Burkina Faso manager appears not losing any sleep over the clash against the Desert Foxes as he gave no indication that his team would take the encounter seriously. But the German says his sights are fixed on Tuesday’s friendly against South American giants Argentina in in Krasnodar, Russia. “All the games are important, it’s right we have already qualified for the World Cup, so the result is not the most important,” he said in a video posted on the Eagles’ official Twitter account. “The most important thing in this game against Algeria is to have a good game and also get good results. “It’s an opportunity for us to see other players who didn’t play because we had our players but now we have six injuries and at least I will make six changes for the game against Algeria and this is an opportunity to see these players who didn’t play so much and it will be interesting to play Algeria in this condition. “They have a new coach (Rabah Madjer) and they are playing at home so they will be very aggressive.” Rohr added, “The second game against Argentina is against one of the best teams in the world, who perhaps have the best players. We will have one South American team in our group (at Russia 2018) and also our trip to Russia will enable to us see where we will camp for the World Cup.” Meanwhile, Bursaspor midfielder Mikel Agu has been ruled out of the clashes against Algeria and Argentina. “Turkey based midfielder Mikel Agu is out of our upcoming games against Algeria and Argentina,” statement on the team’s Twitter account said on Wednesday. Also, Russia-born defender Brian Idowu is expected to join the Eagles in Krasnodar for the match against Argentina, according to scorenigeria.com. punchng.com/rohr-opts-for-ebuehi-agbo-uzoho-against-algeria/ 2 Likes |

Nigeria: We Should Focus On Positives From Argentina Friendly, Says Adepoju Ex-international Mutiu Adepoju has described the upcoming international friendly between Nigeria and La Abiceleste of Argentina as a good way of preparing the Super Eagles for the 2018 World Cup. Adepoju said in an interview in Lagos that no matter the outcome of the prestige friendly emphasis should be on the positives outcome of the match. "First on the friendly match, the match against Algeria and Argentina is a good way of preparing for the World Cup, because there won't be enough matches for the team. "And though the match against Algeria is one of the last qualifying game, but we have already qualified, we can use it to prepare the team towards the World Cup. "And the one against Argentina is a very great friendly game in which its first grade, which Nigeria, which will be very good for the preparation. "No matter what happens in those matches, we should just try and get the positives from the matches." Similarly, Edema Fuludu, a former Super Eagles attacking midfielder, says the upcoming friendly is a dress rehearsal for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup. Fuludu said that the match will test the resilience of the players. "You play Argentina, you are playing a team like Germany, you are playing a team like Brazil, you are playing such big team like Italy, so it's good for us. "Yes opposition cannot be stronger than Argentina; well task mentality, players' resilience and a proper team formation because we qualified without losing a game. "We were the first in Africa to have qualified with a game in hand. The Argentines they have met us a couple of times and we have lost to them. "But we stood our ground well however we cannot afford to be losing consistently to them more so we may just meet again at the World Cup, so we must take the game very serious. "The coach is also using such Grade A friendly to assess the quality of players' he has so that he can know where and where to tinker properly. "This kind of Grade A is what we need if we can play a few of them, it will give them psychological boost that will prepare them in their mind specifically." Omeruo Rues Personal Woes At Chelsea Kasimpasa of Turkey defender, Kenneth Omeruo is lamenting his inability to get into the main squad at Chelsea, and believes it is the major reason why he lost his place in the Super Eagles. After getting into the Eagles’ camp ahead of Friday’s game against Algeria through the stand-by route, Omeruo feels let down by his woes at Stamford Bridge, as he believes he would have gained more recognition in Nigeria had he been playing regularly with The Blues. The dark-skinned central defender, who joined Kasimpasa on loan few days before the end of the summer transfer window, has not played a competitive game for the national team since November 2016. He was left out of the Eagles rosters for matches against Cameroon and Zambia, and was placed on standby for this month’s international games before he was handed a late invite following an injury suffered by Trabzonspor of Turkey midfielder, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi. Omeruo is match fit ahead of the Eagles last two games of 2017 as he has clocked up ninety minutes in each of the last six games in the Turkish Super Lig, but thinks he would have more recognition had he been playing in England. ”If I’m honest, I thought not being settled during the summer denied me a chance in the Eagles and the boys were doing well. ”At the back of my mind I thought the main reason was because I was not playing regularly and now I have joined Kasimpasa and I’m a regular there so I have a chance now to prove my class again and I will take it.” www.footballlive.ng/omeruo-rues-personal-woes-at-chelsea/ 1 Like |

Aina Misses Hull’s Best Player Award Hull City of England defender, Ola Aina has missed out on being named the club’s player of the month for October, as the star on loan from Chelsea was not even named among the last set of nominees for the award. Aina was conspicuously missing from the final shortlist of nominees for the most outstanding player in October for KCOM Stadium outfit. The 21-year old, who is currently away for international duties with Nigeria, had been an ever present for the Championship club, starring in all but just one of their 16 second-tier division games so far since joining on loan from parent club, Chelsea. Aina and his co defenders all missed out on the roll call, though he had been part of a backline that shipped eight goals in the last four games in which he’s featured in. However, The Tigers faithful are left to pick their best player for October from the quartet of Fraizer Campbell, Allan McGregor, Max Clark and Bowen Jarrod in the club’s shortlist. Aina would definitely be hoping he fares better when he turns out for his national side in either of the games against Algeria and Argentina in the course of the international break. www.footballlive.ng/aina-misses-hulls-best-player-award/ |

Troost-Ekong Believes Algeria Can’t Beat Eagles Bursaspor of Turkey defender, William Troost-Ekong has raised the ante ahead of Friday’s final World Cup qualifier of the Super Eagles against Algeria, as he says he and other players in the Nigerian squad will give everything to avoid defeat in Constantine. Though the player on loan from AA Gent of Belgium admits Friday’s match is inconsequential, as Nigeria have already picked the group’s single ticket to Russia 2018, he says the Eagles want to end the race unbeaten. With that in mind, Troost-Ekong reiterated that the players will not treat the game against Algeria with kid gloves. Troost-Ekong, who has been fantastic alongside SV Mainz 05 of Germany defender, Leon Adeyemi Balogun in the heart of the Eagles’ back-four, also praised his central defence partner and other players in the Nigerian squad. “The experience playing for the Super Eagles has been life-changing for me. Facing some of the best forwards in Africa whilst having to perform and deliver for such a football-loving nation is a pressure that improves you as a player. “I enjoy being with the team, and working with quality players. Playing alongside someone like Balogun with his quality has definitely helped, but I would feel just as comfortable playing next to anyone. “I know when the draw was made, nobody gave us a chance to qualify but we proved all doubters wrong by not just finishing first in the group of death, but we also qualified with a game to spare; that to me, is a massive achievement. “We should aim to finish our World Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten and again use this as a game to improve as a team,” Ekong concluded. www.footballlive.ng/troost-ekong-believes-algeria-cant-beat-eagles/ 1 Like |
