It is a personal/family house. Both parlours and their respective sit out areas have already been done with pop (120 m²). There are 6 rooms to be done and altogether about 170 m² so comparing cost and it seemed at first that using high quality PVC ceilings such as Innoson would be ideal.

Cleaning PVC when it's dirty especially white ones is not an exercise for fitness!!

I used 3 DBs in mine for this reason. D8 + D6 to share the load on different sides of the building then a separate D4 for load that can be served by an inverter. All 3 phase though.

If you are going for 'not-so-expensive' Tiles , dont use very shiny types for the living room.
There traffic of feet will make it lose that shine so quickly it will be obvious you used a 'not-so-expensive' tile!
Use those that are not shiny for your living room and use a bright color (preferably white with some light ash).

use mostly non-primary colours that are brighgt, they give an air of 'space' and cleanliness.
Use large Tiles as much as possible (60x60), they are faster & cheaper to install and have fewer joint-lines, which makes them more appealing when installed

CDK Tiles is Nigerian made and not doing very bad. Sold in Lagos, dont know if they sell it in the East.

I am not a Tiler or a Contractor, l am just speaking from my own experiences, of my personal builds.

It's a relatively big private dwelling so any reputable distco would require the load to be spread among the circuits. The smaller building it is replacing was also on 3 phase supply as far as I know.

On tariff, you are paying for energy (kwh) so it should not matter whether single phase or three phase but I concede the three phase meter may be more expensive.

I bought the Materials (to cover the 120 sq M, 40 bags of white cement and 40 kg of the sponge (or whatever they call it)) and the guys charged 1500 per sq M as their workmanship (actually it was the supervisor/contractor who upped the amount, the guys charged 1000 Naira).
In all, I spent about 410k Naira on the POP

Now I am considering whether or not to use POP for the rest of the rooms or PVC. About 10-12 bundles of 8-inches PVC would be required to cover the 170 sq M. Innoson is selling a bundle for 24k. If I opt to use POP, I would need to buy about 65 bags of white cement and 65 kg of the sponge.

I must say that the guys did a very neat and good job

PHOTO CRITIQUE

Lets go on some academic jingoism. I say academic because I'm about to critique some projects on Nairaland but as we may well know, the projects might all have been completed and in full bloom and the home owners are already enjoying the fruit of their labour so any critique is just academic. But we should learn a thing or two for future project.

I kick-off with the first kitchen (Photo). What do you think is right with the layout of the kitchen? I think the wall tile is well done and I also like the POP work. The worktop is also half decent. But things go down hill from there. The layout of the first kitchen can be better designed:

1) there is scope for the window to be bigger to let in more light and ventilation.

2) the wall unit is too high, reaching items on the unit without a stand will be a problem even if the user is tall. All height should reach wall units without over reaching themselves.

3) the kitchen zinc looks like an after thought. More could be done in this area by working the zinc on the worktop. It is an L design layout but poorly done.

4) the most miffed aspect of the kitchen is the position of the Gas cylinder. Obviously there was no provision for the cylinder in the design of the kitchen. Cylinders as a safety recommendation should be outside and the connection pipped through the walls into the kitchen. This is not the case with this kitchen. This is a huge fire hazard. Cylinder gas heads are notorious to leak a lot. Imagine one is cooking and the gas head is leaking; there is real danger of gas explosion.

The second kitchen (photo) is a better designed "L" layout kitchen though I'm not sure with the choice of units colour of green and the busy wall tile. Having said that, the design layout is spot on.

What do you think is right with this living room (parlour)? Take a look at the picture.

All I see is a very busy parlour: from the busy wall tile to the badly put together PVC ceiling. No character, no ambience. Looking at the picture what comes to mind is a poorly put together beer parlour instead of a cosy living-room. On a scale of 1 - 10, how satisfied are you with the design of the parlour where 1 is completely dis-satisfied and 10 is completely satisfied? I will rate it a 4. For me is that bad. Solid house, poor finish.
