Ambode is working, Lagos is moving forward

Does he ride in these buses to his office and home every day or he is just deceiving himself?

Still waiting on light rail line. Who ever commissions that will stroll in lIke Obama after killing Osama. Thats one of majob things it needs to be metropolises. The buses cool I guess. E-ticketing is good.

We have been waiting since 1983 when Jakande started construction works on the metro.
$$$$$$$$$ billions stolen and wasted since 2010 yet nothing to show.
For how much longer shall we wait?

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

Fellow Nairalanders, in response to Fashola comments below on not receiving enough support from the federal government to complete the Lagos light rail project.

Few months ago same Fashola said this:

Lagos: How We Spent N160bn World Bank Loan on Light Rail Project

The Lagos State Government yesterday justified the N160 billion it borrowed from the World Bank, noting that the fund was channelled to finance its light rail (blue line) project.

We can't complete Lagos light rail project

We obviously can't complete Lekki international phantom airport.

And you will be the biggest fool to think that we can complete Eko Atlantic.

Use your head people where do you think we are getting all the money we are using to sponsor Buhari undecided

TTC in talks to sell old trains to Lagos. Are they safe enough?
AUGUST 10, 2011

As Toronto trainspotters gleefully take maiden rides on the TTC's Rocket, commuters in Lagos, Nigeria may be about to get some new trains of their own. Our old ones.

A TTC spokesperson has confirmed that the commission is negotiating with a private group to sell up to 260 used train cars to the West African megacity's new transit project.

"I can confirm that the TTC is in discussion with a third party that wants to purchase trains for Lagos," said commission spokesperson Brad Ross. "Over a period of time, they will be taken out of service and then transported over to Nigeria."

The cars being considered for sale are the TTC's old H-5 and H-6 models, which will be decommissioned as the TTC rolls out its new fleet of Rockets. Ross predicts the earliest they could be shipped to Nigeria is sometime in 2012.

Traffic snarls are already a major economic problem in the Nigerian capital, a booming city that will reach an estimated population of 25 million by 2015. A new above-ground rail system designed to carry 1.5 million people a day has already broken ground, and Lagos Governor Babtunde Fashola has said it "will be the most multi-dimensional and most impactful" of the government's efforts to reduce traffic congestion.

Fashola visited Toronto earlier this year to inspect the TTC trains.

The Lagos deal would be the first of its kind for the TTC. Decommissioned cars are usually sold for scrap metal and can fetch up to $1,500 dollar each. While Ross declined to discuss specific figures, he says the sticker price for Lagos is "significantly more" than scrap prices, putting the potential profits to the TTC in the millions of dollars.

It is not unusual for technology from western nations to end up in poorer countries. Marketplaces in Africa and Asia are flooded with North American clothes, computers, and even cars, but the purchase of larger technology like trains is rarer.

The cars will have to be significantly refurbished to fit existing infrastructure in Lagos, and some Nigerian media reports have lamented that the government appears to have settled on "tokundo," or used, trains instead of brand new vehicles.

Although half the cars are more than 30 years old, Ross is adamant they are perfectly safe and are only being decommissioned for capacity reasons. But he also admitted the TTC is not required to make sure the cars meet any safety standards before selling them.

"Once sold, it's up to the new operator to ensure they are in good working order," he said. "They do need to be maintained much more frequently than the new trains, simply because of their age. At some point they will run out their useful life."

Murtaza Haider, director of the Institute of Housing and Mobility at Ryerson University, said the age of the cars is definitely a cause for concern.

"We should be ensuring that there is some service life left in these vehicles and we're not going to be playing havoc with the lives of those who would ride these vehicles," Haider said. "There's metal fatigue, and that metal fatigue could result in dangerous conditions. I would be paying a close watch on this for the next ten years to see how many accidents do happen in Lagos."

He also warned that while rail systems are glamorous as far as transit infrastructure goes, they are not always as effective at reducing congestion as other options. Nevertheless, new rail systems are frequently preferred because governments can take advantage of kickbacks from large contracts.

According to media reports, the cost estimates for the Lagos rail project have varied wildly from $1.2 billion to $30 billion. In 2010, a Nigerian government watchdog accused Fashola's government of widespread corruption.

"More often than not, politicians favour rail transit because it is more expensive," Haider said. "It's almost useless in some cases, and less productive in most cases, than a bus system. But you can't buy busses for $30 billion. You can inflate prices and make a lot of money buying a rail system."

guy you got me craving for Fashola to be back as Lagos state Gov. That man really transformed Lagos state. Lagosians really need to thank God that he came after Tinubu, if it had been the other way round i.e Ambode after Tinubu, i can't imagine the kind of mess Lagos as a state will be in now. what people don't understand is that, no matter how noble your intentions are, once you get into power and begin to find faults with your predecessor instead of beginning to focus on your own roadmap, you have started setting problems for your self. current examples of such leaders are Ambode, Buhari , Trump etc. Why can't you just do your own and let the public see the difference. Once again despite deliberate attempts to bury the good efforts of Fashola, his name will continue to stand out in Lagos as a visionary and accomplished person in the state .

I think say na only me. He is the most useless governor in Lagos state. Roads are getting worse all over Lagos everyday nothing is been done. No reasonable project on ground. He I'll be Commisioning WiFi, statue, all the street lights in Lagos are dead. Very useless governor.

All with N820 billion, the largest state budget in the history of Nigeria, but Fashola built 5 power plants, several housing estates, waterworks, 30 skills centers, 10 maternity centers, several schools, and hospitals, many roads, bridges including the best bridge in Nigeria, revived Jakande's Metro rail project which remains the largest public works and visionary project in Nigeria, several new court buildings, Lagos state command and control center and so on, all with less than half of Ambode's N820 billion budget.

All we have so far are silly and pointless statues, roadside painting, bus stops, laybys, just LG kind of nonsense. Nothing major, no grand vision, nothing.

Aregbesola delivered more projects than Ambode and many states combined and Osun airport looks more realistic than Lagos state's proposed airport and the airport foundation and prep work done by Tinubu and Fashola. Ambode is not even talking about the airport, it's totally off the table.

I can't believe the incompetent clown is asking for N1 trillion budget next year.

Fashola left so many projects in different stages of completion for this joker to complete, but instead, he abandoned the projects and refused to pay the contractors why hiding his jealousy and incompetence under some silly UNDER REVIEW rubbish.

Fashola is the most production and accomplished governor and public official in the history of Nigeria and I don't see Ambode getting anywhere near that record with his level of incompetence, lack of foresight and vision.

lol. Listen to yourself? Fashola that rehabilitated water works, built skill acquisition centers in all local government, built roads that motorist are now making money from, renovated all the general hospitals, provided new buildings including renovation of almost all the secondary and primary schools( at least as bushy as badagry is. All the primary and secondary schools here got new buildings and the old ones renovated by fashola, health centers nko, all done) ambode is a Useless governor. If fashola had the budget of 800 billion like him eh. Fashola and jakande are best governors that ever graved Lagos state!

Let's be objective 500billion of 2014 is more than 800of today.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that Ambode has settled for "small-small" projects in multiple numbers and ignored the bigs ones which are more strategic. I would have thought that by now, the phase 1 of the light rail project should have been on stream, people should have been able to take trains from Festac to CMS. I can understand that there is a major underground Oil pipeline from Festac to Badagry axis which has to be relocated, but Festac to CMS should have been a priority for Ambode. Secondly on housing, he just let down steam. I am not too sure if he's commissioned any housing project he started from the scratch. The only things I see is his modification of Lagos HOMS model of Fashola to a Rent-to-Own scheme. Many of Fashola's unfinished housing (Ilubirin, Millenium Gbagada, Ijora Badia etc) project still remain unfinished.

This BRT lauch and lay-by, fantastic though, but are not going to solve our traffic problems. These initiatives are normally consolidations to the Rail transport system. Until Lagos is connected by Rail, all these ones are just as good as scratching the surface

Yet to commission any housing schemes and the ones Fashola left for him to complete have all been abandoned including Ilubirin.

Ilubirin was designed to accommodate 1,300 families, but ambode not only abandoned the project based on meaningless excuses like the project is under review but also cut the occupancy down from 1,300 families to just 500 families. He basically stalled, altered and bastardized the project. When asked about the project, he said he did not abandon the project, it's just under review and he's trying to make the place an entertainment center, commercial and residential when in fact the place was designed and designated residential only.

This is totally not the blueprint and masterplan Tinubu left behind or what Fashola worked tirelessly on. Obviously, Ambode is trying to game the project and divert part of the land for high-end consumers.

Talking about objectivity, let's for the sake of argument go with your plead for objectivity and agree that 500 billion then is indeed 800 billion today, objectivity still dictates that with the same 500 billion then and now, Fashola was able to build power plants, many many roads, bridges, including the best bridge in Nigeria today, several schools, several hospitals, waterworks, skills centers, drivers institute, the largest courthouse in Nigeria and so on just after 2 years in office so are you saying objectively that the same 500 billion is not enough to do better than Fashola or even deliver the same performance and all Lagosians deserve with that money are common statues, bus stops, overhead bridge, 1 flyover and laybys?

Leaders are supposed to perform better than their predecessors, not the other way around.

Best Bridge in Nigeria.

Fashola started construction after less than 2 years in office while after 2 years in office, ambode is still busy painting sidewalk and messing around with LG bus tops with N820 billion in his pocket.

I just wonder what we are getting in 2018 with his N1 trillion budget.

What a sad shame.

stop defending that useless governor jare. Fashola budget hovers around 400billion. Let say according to you 400 billion equals 800 billion, hes still not doing anything other than painting bridges, doing WiFi, busstops, statue. Those projects ain't up to 150billion out of 800. So many roads are begging to be done or rehabilitated in Lagos, even in ikeja where the governors office is, internal roads are getting bad, the traffic lights are dead. Within 3 years of fashola. He has built countless new roads, bridges, rehabilited waterworks, built housing estates, hospitals, schools, power stations, skill acquisition centers, ambulance units, fire centers, beautified water shorelines. He touched all the whole aspect of Lagos economy. But ambode, water nothing, roads 10percent( its the one fashola couldn't finish) schools zero, housing zero, Inshort all other aspect zero. Useless and dumb governor, only know how to club.
