New "mobility packages" for SANDF border patrol.

"Apart from Joint Operations, input for development was supplied by the Logistics and Signals formations as well as the SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) and the defence, peace, safety and security division of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The national research and development organisation was involved in the development of the roll cage and improving stability to make it more user friendly in the tough off-road conditions of border protection"

Government twitter page released some pics today. Timing couldn't be worse grin. Most South Africans are clueless about SANDF, so when they see a government tweet about SANDF mixed with what is happening in Zimbabwe....panic smiley.

Actually I'm surprised they use tracked APCs and I see some are amphibious as well, I wonder what their doctrine is. Then you got reputable news agencies calling them tanks.

NAF AFFIRMS WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER WITH TURKISH ARMED FORCES

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has affirmed its willingness to partner with the Turkish Armed Forces to enhance capacity building for its personnel and promote mutually beneficial collaboration between the militaries of both countries. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar disclosed this during the visit of the new Defence Attachee (DA), Republic of Turkey, Group Captain Murat Selcuklu at NAF Headquarters today, 14 November 2017. According to the CAS, there are several potential areas of cooperation between Nigeria and Turkey thus accounting for the opening of a Defence Section in Ankara. He congratulated Group Captain Selcuklu for being the first military attaché to be posted to Nigeria.

Earlier, the Defence Attache had stated that he was delighted to be in Nigeria to improve the relationship between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and those of Turkey. He called on the NAF to send a team to visit Turkey to see the capabilities of the country and discover more areas of collaboration. It would be recalled that President Buhari of Nigeria and President Erdogan of Turkey recently agreed to strengthen relations in the area of security and particularly, the fight against terrorism, amongst other issues. The agreement was reached during President Buhari’s meeting with the Turkish President in Ankara ahead of a meeting of “Developing Eight” countries, simply known as D-8 countries.

Friday week sees the official start of the 2017 Exercise Oxide, a joint French-South African naval exercise.

Oxide this year will take place from November 24 to December 9 on and around the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, a French territory. The lead force for the exercise is the French Armées de la Zone Sud de l’Océan Indien (FAZSOI), based on the island. The last Oxide was held off Richards Bay on South Africa's east coast in 2015.

The South African deployment for Oxide this comprises:
- the Valour Class frigate SAS Amatola (F145)
- a Super Lynx maritime helicopter embarked on it
- an AFB Waterkloof 28 Squadron C-130
- a C-47TP from35 Squadron, based at AFB Ysterplaat.
- an airborne platoon of 36 combat ready parachutists
- a SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) medical team embedded on the frigate.

The exercise is scenario-based and this year’s theme, identified by the lead nation is “fight against narcotics”.

This will see inter-operability exercised as well as plans developed between the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town and the Maritime Rescue Sub-Regional Centre (MRSC) on La Reunion. Maintenance, promotion and building on operational as well as tactical co-operation between both forces are also high on the exercise agend

South Africa’s defence exports in 2016 were worth R4 billion

The 2016 calendar year saw the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC) authorise export permits with a total value of R4 170 291 132.

According to the annual report for the 12 months starting 1 January, 2016 and ending 31 December 2016, the committee, under the chairmanship of Minister Jeff Radebe, authorised 2 913 export permits covering 88 countries. The NCACC report was signed off by Radebe in March this year but has only just found its way into the public domain.

The armoured personnel carrier (APC) expertise built up by the local defence industry again stood it in good stead with over a dozen countries taking up options to acquire South African APCs. This included Angola (24 vehicles worth R85 million); Ivory Coast (two vehicles worth R3.7 million), Denmark (two vehicles worth R9.7 million); Iraq (ten vehicles worth R94 million); Jordan (14 vehicles worth R235 million); Kazakhstan (four vehicles worth R18 million); Kenya (seven vehicles worth R35 million); Malaysia (one vehicle worth R3.5 million); Mali (seven vehicles worth R40 million); Thailand (20 vehicles worth R8.4 million) and Saudi Arabia (30 vehicles worth R290 million). Singapore received 19 armoured vehicles and 27 hulls worth R78 million.

What the NCACC terms “heavy weapons” were widely exported. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates received 620 40 mm guns. The UAE also acquired 27 mortars. Indonesia and New Zealand acquired six 7.62 mm machineguns while Oman acquired 500 ‘machine guns’ valued at R53 million.

South African bombs, mortars and rockets last year legally found their way into the inventories of the Netherlands, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, with the Middle Eastern country buying more than 24 000 120m mortars, five thousand 81mm mortars and 94 60mm mortars.

Ammunition, including 20mm and 40mm, with some described as “various” was exported to Oman, Chile, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Tanzania, the United Araba Emirates and Venezuela. These exports amounted to around R215 million. One of the biggest small arms ammunition exports was to the UAE: 8.6 million rounds of 7.62 ammunition worth R102 million.

Fire control and related warning equipment was exported to Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kenya, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, China, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Included in this category are transponders, integrated defensive suites, infrared detectors, LEDS systems, radar, system jammers and laser warning systems. The biggest contract was for Saudi Arabia, for 586 LEDS systems worth R82 million.

Other electronic equipment, including rangefinders and communication equipment was exported to Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Republic of Korea, Nepal, China, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

Five countries added South African counter-measures equipment to their inventories. Egypt, Germany, Italy, Malaysia and the United Araba Emirates now have South African periscopes, binoculars, ruggedised computers and observation and targeting systems at their disposal. South African software with military and defence applications valued at over R4 million was exported to India and Saudi Arabia in the 2016 calendar year.

According to the 2016 last quarter report, Germany acquired 16 missiles worth R259 million (possibly for Algeria ). Total defence exports for the 2015 calendar year amounted to R2.7 billion. This compares to R2.98 billion for 2014, R3.2 billion the year before and R10.6 billion in 2012

There won't be any. Botswana won't fight for what they'll perceive as protecting the Mugabe dynasty, South African parliament won't approve troop deployment for Zimbabwe. Zuma would be in a weakened political position in the ANC in few weeks from now. They may want to recall him to resign in the Presidency like did with Thabo Mbeki after the December party election.

Technically, Zuma and Mugabe are in similar position of loosing power in the region.

So no Rooivalk and Rooikat photos in Zim I'm afraid wink

They'll eventually want to recall him from parliament like he did with Mbek. They know they can't leave Zuma in power after they defeat him and his former wife in party elections. He'll immediately reshuffle parliament, intelligence, sign a nuclear deal with the Russians and prolong his stay to avoid going on trial for his 700+ charges.

Zimbabwe is a sovereign state - we have no right to interfere in their internal affairs. If they request assistance they shall receive it.

If you werent such an ignoramus you would be well aware that South Africa has effected great change in Zimbabwe over the past (Who is Thabo Mbeki? What is back-room diplomacy? Who are the MDC?)

Augustine, you need to realize that your childlike ramblings have no place in this thread - even other Nigerians are starting to call you out on your bullsh1t. Go back to beegeagles blog - people seem to like your grandiose fantasies there.

Nigerians calling me out lol! Listen kid, there are Nigerians and there are Nigerians. So that's not an escape for u neither is calling me Augustine escape. I won't let this pass. Did u hear me? Cowards! That u and ignoramuses here don't know international relations don't mean I'll let it adorn nairaland.

Everything I write is continually validated here day by day only insolent-proud-I-too-know humans here act about it with f.oolery yet go behind to steal points and quote it by other terms here. I have talked on regional powers, what it means and the coercive measures it can bring to bear by various means. So, you are clearly not getting it. Because u're a kid I'll tell you again, now u cancel and remain mediocre as ur retort indicates or sit at the foot of the teacher and learn:

Long story short, you see what happened or is happening in SADC won't happen in ECOWAS, period. Why? Because an Hegemon exists: Nigeria. The states know Nigeria has the military threat dimension which don't necessarily have to be used but just the fact it exists brings Nations into acquiescence of the hegemon. I could draw you a scenario of measures Nigeria could employ in Zimbabwe to determine the outcome it wants and would it act yes it would. Failure to act makes it weaker. That's a regional power. It surreptitiously, covertly, overtly, economically or militarily determines the fate of nations under it's sphere of influence.

AK and indeed others I remember has been drawing for blood in Zimbabwe to show your military might now he's singing a different tune. Next time when a Nigerian talks y'all should just shut up and acknowledge whose your boss. That's the fact.

Here you are babbling nonsense. You think after all the noise you southies make of your capabilities condescending on us at every turn and the opportunity presents itself to prove it and you failed again I'll swallow it hook line and sinker, nah, imma call you out so it's documented. Where's your shiny Gripens? but alas the Zims know you have no combat capability. You can't fight. If you were a threat those Generals would dare not do what they did knowing the consequences. What happened in your backyard won't happen here and everyone knows it but the bias of ur media cousins especially bbc would have us read a different narrative to make SA still appear relevant in power dynamics but would never give Nigeria it's due. No, you are not.

One phone call from a Nigerian General and any officer planning a coup in sub-Saharan Africa will think twice and stand down.

I can't continue to indulge a kid. Oya cancel and get a jolt to your veins. The point has been made. SA military power and regional claim only exists on paper. Covert has been validated again and will be validated again.
