ROMANCE NOVELS…THE EFFECTS ON GIRLS WHO READ THEM by ScotFree

Love as portrayed in romantic novels and movies are actually more funny than they are true. How many times in real life do lovers run in slow motion to meet each other under the rain, kiss and maybe play in the puddle?

Love as depicted in movies and novels are fictional; the romance created for entertainment. Not many of our teens and women know that. If she found her Knight in shining armour in the most romantic and appealing way, on a bus, at school, at the market, doesn’t mean you would find yours under the same circumstance. Well you might if you go looking for it…you just might find yourself a loser in Aluminium foil.

The movies they watch and the books they read paint for their minds a picture of this one true love, this one special person they are going to meet when they least expect, this person they can’t help but fall heads over heels in love with, marry and live happily ever after. The Movies and books paint them a picture of perfection and bliss. A perfection they are all entitled to, and must look out for. Beautiful!

But the problem with such modern cultural programming is that they will wake up one day to realise they have become totally possessed by a certain way of seeing and doing things…ways they as individuals never chose for themselves. They read these novels and watch these movies, they breathe them in; these things they are shown that soon become part of them, one with the cells of their bodies. The movies and novels dictate to them – you must fall in love and your relationships must be like the ones in the movies and books… nothing more, nothing less. The novels demand such perfection from them. So that they too in turn know what perfection to ‘demand’ from their partners. Demand here being a self centered expectation that their needs will always be satisfied, and their happiness will always come from their partners.

When these demands aren’t met, trouble sets in for she is totally dependent on him for her happiness, fulfilment, satisfaction, pride, confidence and more. The failure on prince charmings part to provide all these needs for her always leads to frustration and the want for more. Soon the relationship is deemed ‘imperfect’ (imperfect as compared to those in the movies and novels). Break up follows and other emotional problems with it.

Some never commit to another relationship. They must wait till everything is right, of course, like they are in the books. That may never come. Not until they accept that relationships aren’t beds of roses. Not until they consider and rethink the following falsehoods presented by the movies and novels.

I don't believe so sha.

A lot of our mothers and aunts grew up reading Mills and boons.

These days, asides romance novels, we have Telemundo and romance movies.

It doesn't distort our view of reality. It only put us in this "wishful thinking" state. But does it mean we don't know that what we read and watch is just fiction?

We do, and it doesn't mean we have this exaggerated expectations from love or men after reading or watching them.

Below are some Impressions from romance novels and movies. I'll take the Funny ones first

1. Wooing

Girls love to be wooed. The even love it more and tend to imagine more colourful pictures of how it should be done after they have watched or read their first romance novels and movies. They imagine some heaven perfect scenario where this young, tall, (dark) handsome dude, perfect in everyway, falls on his knees, drooling and begging for their love. The person most likely to chase you that way is the begger at the end of your street, and most likely because you look like you’ve got some Naira notes to spare; not the man of your dreams (unless they are one and the same person).

2. Looks:

We all love the good looking ones. The Tall, rugged and handsome guy. The curvy girl in tight fitting clothes. The images straight from fashion and modelling magazines.

The truth is not everyone is equally good looking and good looks don’t guarantee that you will be loved as they do in the movies and novels.

More serious points now.

3. Only one person in the world for you:
For real? With over 5 billion humans in the world! If there is really only just one person out there that you can partner with or are compatible with, then it is more likely your requirements are so demanding there isn’t anyone who can meet them. I agree that person you seek should be a special person – but not the only one.

4. Their love is perfect:

Love is a reason to try hard, to go above and beyond, and to accomplish things in a relationship. Prince charming's love won’t be one without faults. It won’t be an unbreakable bond. It won’t always pay your bills or get you a job. No one is perfect. So believe that your heaven made partner can sometimes be so ordinary. He will forget some important dates sometimes. He can fail at impressing your friends or family. He can be lazy around the house too. When you see these faults, do you pack up and leave, waiting for the next scene from your favourite romance movie?

5. The Relationship can never end:

All things end. Circumstances change. So instead of laying back and expecting things to just fall in pleasant places for you all the time, it might be worthwhile to always tell your partner how much they mean to you, and then work on showing it. Words are cheap. Action does the magic.

6. I can change him:
Well, you could fail. The bad traits you see in him do not exist because of you. You cannot always fix them. You can only encourage them to change. Just be honest about what you want and how you feel about it.

Problems of romance novels and how they affect your relationships.

1. They are written to titillate you.

There isn’t a huge difference between some romance novels and porn. Many honest girls admit they find it arousing. So i suppose that girls who digest novel after novel aren’t different from those who see porn. Many have taken to the idea that love is all about sex; sex so perfect and so consuming. So when Prince charming doesn’t get so romantic, prince charming fails.

2. It stirs dissatisfaction.

Characters in such books are created to be extremely appealing. They are made to be so lovable, and you have come to love them as the ideal partner. Many girls end up comparing their relationships and partners to those in the books and movies? A recipe for disaster. What happens when your partner doesn’t pack as much charm?
Re: Romance Novels…the Effects On Girls Who Read Them By Scotfree by Nobody: 1:48pm On Nov 15, 2017
3. A wrong idea about what relationships are.

In most romance movies and novels, true love is depicted as all encompassing and it excludes others. It’s just you and him. Most girls come to believe that this is the accurate picture of love. That when you love somebody, the whole world will be against you. That no one can understand you. Your parents won’t, your friends won’t. Just the two of you against the world. But in reality, i know love grows your life, it doesn’t shrink it.

4. Prince charming will save you.

Forget the damsel in distress story ( i watched a lot of disney cartoons growing up ). Truth is, no man can completely fix you or make you whole. He is just as broken as you are, needing to be fixed too. You can only work at complementing each others weaknesses and strengths. If you wait for him to save you all the time, you will only end up burdening him and soon he will get tired and give up.

In conclusion, while the ideals of romance novels and movies remain culturally strong -the abs, the charm, the looks, sex, hot bodies and all-, what matters at the end of the day, whether he/she has got any of these or not, is that you have each other, care for one another, he’s got your back and you have got his, she’s there for you when you are down and you are strong for her when she needs you.

Re: Romance Novels…the Effects On Girls Who Read Them By Scotfree by Nobody: 1:51pm On Nov 15, 2017

Finally, I suppose if people let go of the notions they have about how relationships should be and how they work and replaced them with solid reality, relationships might not split up as much as they do..or even get into those that won’t work.

Okay, so you weren't affected by the novels you read and the movies you watched. Many girls out there are still lost in the world of fairy tales, wandering and searching for an all perfect man and an all encompassing love story.

Many of those girls have been dealt a blow by reality and now they can 'truly' see and are 'liberated.

At the beginning of the write up, there was a disclaimer.

Lol, I particularly dislike or let me even say HATE romantic movies, novels, and Telemundo.

It's a big scam! They'll make us believe that we've one prince charming that has six packs with no single flaw. How can someone grow up with that mentality? There is nothing like "Happy ending". It's all a pipedream. Disney has been scamming us as children. They create this false image that life is a bed of roses. Or perhaps, you'll see little thongs but then, you'll find that prince charming and have your happily ever after. Scam of the century.

Now telemundo, the one is completely useless sef. Very predictable bullshiit. Paloma will love Diego, Paloma go get rival same with Diego, then the rival will face 'karma' for their atrocities, and Paloma will marry Diego and they'll live happily ever after. That's the summary of all the useless telemundos. I pity all these air headed girls that follow the useless series and takes it serious thinking it applies to our everyday life.

If I get my kids watching any, na die that day. I go beat craze out of their body. angry

After reading fifty shades, I so wanted my first time to be with someone that will tie me up and whip me...

I don't know why right now...
I just felt it will be our thing and so...
Lol.
It didn't help that more kinky smut came out after that... And erotica is the new chick lit...

Stories of 10 hrs sex... Multiple orgasm in a ten minutes quickey.....

Now, my eyes done clear small.....
Thank God I didn't meet a sadist.... Even little ass smack can be too much for me....

Then the list of single billionaires in their mid twenties to late thirties.... As if it is that easy to make money and they are that easy to get....

The clichéd bleeped up man that the virgin comes to save! Women taking back the prince charming angle and making it theirs....

The only series I've actually really been invested in is the in death series by J. D. Robb.
From 1996 till date... Over fifty books I think..... And they are a little more realistic romantically even though they're futuristic...
