Beach soccer and indoor soccer are international and promoted by FIFA. No one considers it the REAL THING. Rugby 7's is pretty down the totem pole of Rugby codes. When people talk about the All Blacks, no one is thinking about Rugby 7's.

I've never watched a Rugby match in my life, but I could still name loads of Rugby players: New Zealanders, English, Aussies, Saffers.....I can't name one single Rugby 7s player and I'm the kind of guy that absorbs pretty useless information and follow the most eclectic range of sports you'll see.

Have some fun. We beat NZ on home soil in a global tourney, not in a friendly ! And we didnt make noise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eA6UnBfgM0

You didn't make noise because no one really cares who won a Rugby 7s match. In proper Rugby, you'd get annihilated by the All Blacks. If you won Atlanta 96' soccer gold against the likes of Brazil and Argentina, you'd definitely make a lot of noise. grin

What are you saying confused chap? You can name seven but you cant name a single Of cos you are confused. Name the few Rugby players you know. If you dont know the top 10 try scorers of all time then you just googled. Kenyan siblings Collins Injera and Humprey Kayange occupy position 2 and 9.

Lol, the 90's grin grin grin Bro, we are in the new millenium. Forget Obasanjo and Kanu's golden eras grin Thats like last century. Liverpool fans are so fond of this. I came across a thread where Norwegians were reminiscing their golden days before Kenya emerged onto the scene in athletics. grin In that match, kenya eliminated NZ from the main cup in front of their crowd. Now, how many times have you done similar stuff on home soil of other players? grin

Because soccer is already an established Olympic sport (many argue it shouldn't be). Rugby wasn't, so they chose a version of it without much of a professional history (just like they chose softball over pro-baseball). Most international players of Rugby 7s play it for the love of the game and there are barely dozens of players worldwide that can make a real pro career out of it.

Ofcos I know bro ! But streaming matches is not a free for all affair. They must dish out some cash to the league to get those rights, and its often expensive and why many national broadcasters dont provide free live sport. It can easily run the entity into financial strain if they dont make enough money and the govt decides to stop the funding for such. Not to mention it can negatively impact match attendance in stadia and be counterproductive in that way.

I think most people would consider beating soccer giants a far more difficult task than doing the equivalent in a niche sport that few countries play. smiley

What does any of this have to do with my initial point that I could not name one single Rugby 7s player?

For goodness sakes, man........it doesn't take a genius to figure out that any team sport where major competitors include the likes of Tonga, Fiji and Samoa is a niche sport. And any sport where you could barely count a few dozen people in the world making a full-time professional living from it is a niche sport. My country doesn't suck in Rugby. My country doesn't play Rugby. I'm in my mid 20's and grew up in Lagos and Abuja and I have never seen any kind of Rugby match organized at any level. Not in school. Not in university. Not at the grassroots. Not in a tournament. Just nothing. I've never even met a Nigerian that watches the damn sport. grin

I'm still trying to figure out what problem you had with the statement. I was saying I can name players from those countries, not listing the countries as players. grin I was saying even though I've never sat down to watch a Rugby match in my life (despite DSTV shoving it down our throats), I still know players like Dan Carter, Tuilagi, Habana, Lomu, Johnny Wilkinson etc.

What makes it niche? Because Fiji or Tonga are playing? The reason those countries are so good is because they adopted Rugby as their national sport! Not because they are small or whatever you are trying to say. In 2014 there were more than 6 million people playing Rugby worldwide, of whom 2.36 million were registered players. I have seen tiny island nations like Tahiti playing soccer, how niche has football become because of their participation?

Just accept your statement was ambiguous and we will stop all this. You said: but I could still name loads of Rugby players.... In the next sentence you said : I can't name one single Rugby 7s player. At least if you used the country names in their noun form e.g New Zealand, England, etc it would have made sense. Instead you used the demonyms; New Zealanders, English, Aussies, Saffers which refers to people as opposed to countries.

So, when you say; but I could still name loads of Rugby players: New Zealanders, English, Aussies, Saffers you are indeed referring to the players!

Seriously, all this trouble to teach you English from the comfort of my couch is worth compensation, and I need it from your English teacher.

Just before I forget, the reason why DSTV is shoving Rugby down yur throats is because they want your footballers to learn some good manners. They want them to stop faking injuries and beating refs and using juju. In Rugby we say, soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, while Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen. cool

Even tennis, far more of a global sport, with far greater grassroots participation than Rugby and far greater name recognition for its stars is considered a niche sport. Whether you consider Rugby generally as a niche sport or not, what is certain is that Rugby 7s is a niche sport, little different from indoor or beach soccer.

Fiji and Tonga and Samoa are good in Rugby simply because not many countries on the planet give a shiit about Rugby. If enough countries gave a shiit, they'll be Rugby minnows. A country like Australia that is a Rugby giant and a football minnow, only 55,000 people play Rugby compared to 623,000 for soccer. South Africa have far more soccer participants than Rugby, but because Rugby is a niche sport, they excel among a few powerhouses while they are minnows in soccer, a truly global sport. In global sports like soccer, teams like Fiji and Tonga will always be useless so they choose one they have a comparative advantage at with little depth of competition.

What does Tahiti playing soccer prove about it being a niche sport. All it proves is that every country on the planet play soccer.

I'm honestly yet to grasp what you've been rambling about concerning this statement. grin It's a weird thing to be fixated about and I'm wasting my time here. If you couldn't comprehend that simple statement, why fixate pedantically over it instead of moving on to something else of substance? Those countries that do well in the sport have REAL MEN. You must be really joking to give SA as an example of a country that excels well in a niche sport. SA is global power in SPORT, not even comparable to you. You should even be ashamed of yourself. Just google NICHE SPORTS and come back here with the answers like a good student tomorrow. You can also google top sports in the world. Thank you
