And when the sit tight leader always manipulates the electoral process to declare himself the winner, and hounds the opposition into exile or oblivion, what is the next step?

Leaders like Mugabe need to realise that their actions would invite coups, if they fail to do the right thing. This would send a strong signal to him. If the AU intervenes, it is to help the Zimbabwean Parliament put in place an interim govt and compel elections to be held in the absence of Mugabe. Once a new govt comes in, then the AU can back down. undecided

The power is meant to be with the people and not with the vice. The vice orchestrated everything, that means the coup was a selfish one. If the millions of people in Zimbabwe cannot vote out a nonworking president, then its their problem. It might look good in the eyes of many but evil people know how to manipulate good intentions for their own gain.

The military can advise the legislature to impeach him or they monitor the next election to see him out of office. Military actions in Africa need to be frowned at and democratic processes need to be promoted.

Chiwenga must be hang!

I guess it is the same way you and that clown the ousted President in Guinea you supported thought until ordinary regional Ecowas came and drove him into exile. Maybe you think other Africans are as corrupt minded like you and don't stand for anything, morally bankrupt individual?

It's a coup, sanctioned by western government (it's obvious from their reporting) and it shouldn't be recognised in Africa because it would signal double standard and embolden military personnel to start plotting coup.

Mugabe might be different things to different persons but this action might further lead to the degradation of democracy in Africa. I hope AU takes the right stand on this issue.

Because Africa failed to correct the wrong imposed by Mugabe for 37years, then this kind of outcomes are imminent (its not rocket science)
And the AU should not forget that Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, Rep. of Congo etc all are time bombs waiting to explode but all the AU will do now is watch all these guys manipulate democratic processes to remain in power and when a coup happens, they want to intervene for selfish reasons.
I wonder what they discuss in their AU meetings, they do not seem to tell themselves the truth in those meetings.
What you fail to correct at the right time will come back to hunt you later....................that's the case in Africa

I don't care about what is happening in Zimbabwe but I care about the retrogressive approach they took. We are trying to bury the era of coup and people are still trying to remind other countries that coup can still be plotted to oust leaders from their seats.

Chiwenga and MNA*******, are no saints. They benefitted from the rubbish government for over 20years. Now they are tired. Let them get out.

The US is the defacto leader of the west. That is a fact.

Secondly, which European powers are interested in Zimbabwe? Is it Norway, Germany, Sweden or Italy? The joke is on you. Yes Mugabe redistributed land from whites in 2000... the British took back their white farmers and have since resettled them. The land that Mugabe took back, how many of them have turned into prosperous black farms today? Why is Zimbabwe in a food crisis? Africans are such jokes.

You live in the US, you see how a democracy (with in-built checks and balances) work and you support Mugabe holding unto power for 37 years? You just wasted all those years living in the US, my sister.

The fact that you end you spiel with "my sister" does not make you sound any less uncouth. Learn to debate without ad hominem attacks. In previous posts to me you mentioned "Idiocy" "foolishly blaming the west" and now you talk about "years being wasted"? Just because we have a difference in opinion? Chiwenga must hang? For what? shocked For going against a myopic man who has perpetuated himself in power, impoverished his people and made it almost impossible to hold free and fair elections, because of his manipulative ways and utter disregard for the people's wishes?

Abeg, very few individuals would listen to this your sermon if you preach it in Harare, or anywhere in Zim. Mugabe has so messed up the system, that the people cannot express their wishes through the ballot box. He took that power away from the people. Now, that a different option is being given to them, you think they would turn it down? Abeg, come down to the real world. undecided Wake up and smell the coffee.

I would like to first of all thank Grace Mugabe for being a catalyst in the final destruction of a redundant political party. Secondly, I commend the brave men who put their foot down and decided that other things are more important than watching a couple try to play 'king and queen' at the expense of disadvantaged citizens. A long time coming but it came non the less.

Zimbabweans needed a breath of fresh air.they are in a joyous mood.
cashlurd:
It doesn't seem. It is a military coup!!! I also see the hands of western countries in this coup!
Trace back to Mugabe's approach to Donald Trump during the last convention where in like countries talked about their countries gifts and challenges: Trump talked about the North Korean threat, PMB kept on praising Trump without talking about his country, Putin opposed Trump and the only African President to openly oppose Trump was Mugabe!!!

Throwback to Gaddafi and his opposition to the USA and also to all other African Heads of states who opposed the USA In history.

One thing they have in common They have all been overthrown and forced into exile while some unlucky ones get killed!!

The western world wants to control Zimbabwe but Mugabe's strong opposition hindered them. This is one of the many ways to get him out of power and put his deputy in his place who can be easily controlled.

Africans be wise! Africans be woke!! Africans stand against western control of your resources!!!!

You obviously do not know the meaning of the words you use. Idiocy = Idiotic/stupid behavior. Absurd is more akin to weird. If in your village, someone telling you not to accuse them of idiotic behavior = Them requesting u to reverence them on you knees, then I pity you.

Oh BTW: vapid information may be factual. Next time try for opinions, lies or other actual antonyms for the word fact.

In case you are confused as to what a synonym means... A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.

Accusations of Idiocy are not polite. Neither are claims of foolishness ... heck, even throw in claims of absurdity. I definitely won't be cheesing at any of those names.
Just as we disagree as to the main thrust of this thread we will also have to agree to disagree as to what constitutes the bounds of polite conversation

If this is a coup, what will you call it if Mugabe had succeeded in installing his wife as president.
This is a Palaces Coup sanctioned by Mugabe's political party and welcomed by Zimbabweans
