That is what many said of Nkrumah when he was deposed. Some even said he was paranoid for fearing the West were after him, to poison/kill him.
Decades later his Akosombo dam remains Ghana's major light source, his universities the only ones until like 15 years ago. Most of Ghana's infrastructure until President Kuffuor dated from Nkrumah And finally we learnt around 10 years ago that CIA killed Patrice Lumumba (CIA admitted tacitly)......for same reason of closeness to USSR during cold war.
