This is a very serious issue. And a very disturbing one. While it has been very funny watching another conflagration erupt over the "no man's land" trolling about Lagos and reading the Yoruba reactions (or overreactions ), it really does beg questions about this self-destructive, masochistic need for Igbos to attract needless resentment on to themselves. There was Orji Uzor Kalu and his "no man's land" quip some years ago after Fashola deported a few Igbo vagrants to Onitsha which drew an army of similarly loud-mouthed Igbo supporters. There was Obiano's stewpid boast a few days ago about how Anambrarians developed Lagos, which again drew another army of loud-mouthed supporters. Nigeria's richest man, Dangote, has most of his investments in Lagos and the South West and is planning the biggest investment ever made into Nigeria's economy with a $12billion refinery (with him single-handedly providing a quarter of the equity) in Lagos. Yet, I have yet to see these daily squabbles about who owns Lagos between Hausas and Yorubas. Apart from the fact that this "ownership" adds absolutely nothing to our daily lives whether Lagos is owned by Aworis or Ijebus or Germans or Scandinavians or Chinese people or whoever, it's just a needless provocation. This is why I don't blame Lagos state government officials trying through legislation to preserve the Yoruba character of Lagos by compelling Yoruba teaching in schools and also holding legislative deliberations in Yoruba on some days (they should make it everyday sef). Afterall, Nnamdi Azikiwe who sought to participate in Western Nigerian politics spoke fluent Yoruba. Sometimes, you have to separate yourself from the herd and ask yourself hard questions. In Chinua Achebe's own words, Nigerians would come to no other common consensus other than their common hatred for the Igbo man. Some Igbos love to claim this is all due to envy, but Yorubas, by any objective opinion the most successful tribe in Nigeria, don't seem to attract this envious hatred as Igbos claim to do. Fulanis, despite the death and destruction they've wrought on many communities all across the country don't even attract the level of resentment Igbos do. If you find yourself the object of resentment from every corner of the country, including Niger Delta groups that should be our natural allies, maybe there is something everyone finds aggravating about the brash, abrasive, uppity, arrogant insolence of Ndigbo. Humble yourselves. Stop beating your chests all the time about being smarter and richer and better than everyone. Respect your host communities even as you know Igbos are the biggest travelers around the country. Learn to build bridges and alliances and learn diplomacy and tact. This will particular help our attempts to escape the political wilderness we find ourselves in. The obsessive need to rankle everyone serves no purpose. Now you can call me "afonja". But I've said my peace. 21 Likes 4 Shares |

Bro I understand ur point very well but we all where the biggest chest beaters come from. They're the ones attracting unnecessary hatred towards eastern part, my little problem is that if Yorubas start to act now they won't know who started what and who to spare... We're on the long thing. 4 Likes |

achi4u: Ojiofor: I would ordinarily not single out any group, but to be honest, this is the fact. I'm from Anambra (Oraukwu dad, and Agulu mom) but Anambra people are by far the worst for it. Brash, arrogant and highly boastful. A good number of them here don't do it to just other tribes, but they similarly troll Igbos from other states too. 13 Likes |

"....This is why I don't blame Lagos state government officials trying through legislation to preserve the Yoruba character of Lagos by compelling Yoruba teaching in schools and also holding legislative deliberations in Yoruba..." OP will you also not blame the FCT minister if Gwari is made compulsory in Abuja? Lagos has always been distinct from the rest of the Yoruba cities... ...Lagos Colony was a British colonial possession centred on the port of Lagos in what is now southern Nigeria. Lagos was annexed on 6 August 1861 under the threat of force by Commander Beddingfield of HMS Prometheus who was accompanied by the Acting British Consul, William McCoskry. Oba Dosunmu of Lagos (spelled "Docemo" in British documents) resisted the cession for 11 days while facing the threat of violence on Lagos and its people, but capitulated and signed the Lagos Treaty of Cession.[1] Lagos was declared a colony on 5 March 1862.[2] By 1872 Lagos was a cosmopolitan trading center with a population over 60,000.[3] In the aftermath of prolonged wars between the mainland Yoruba states, the colony established a protectorate over most of Yorubaland between 1890 and 1897.[4] The colony and protectorate were incorporated into Southern Nigeria in February 1906, and Lagos became the capital of the protectorate of Nigeria in January 1914.[2] Since then, Lagos has grown to become the largest city in West Africa, with an estimated metropolitan population of over 9,000,000 as of 2011.[5] Leave Lagos alone and go fight for Ibadan, Abeokuta, Akure, Ado Ekiti, etc... 2 Likes |

I just pity Ndi igbo, the most endangered Nigerian tribe. The day our people will get what they are continuously asking from the West and North, your lives will never remain the same. I am glad I have a passport to jet out of this country anytime. Some of us who make the loudest noises don't even own a valid passport. Stop attracting hate towards yourselves by boasting unnecessarily. We don't seem to have learnt from the civil war yet... Nigerians don't hate you...respect yourselves and obbey the laws of your host. Most importantly, always remember home wherever you are Lagos, Abuja and Kaduna are not your ancestral homes and will never be. Build houses in the east, rent them out and use the proceeds to pay the landlords in your place of residence. Finally, we are all Nigerians - even though we have come to like one another - but there's no ONE NIGERIA O gwuka oham n'onu... 15 Likes |

In as much as I don't agree that most Igbos "chestbeat" IN Lagos, I COULD NOT HOLD MYSELF SPITING OBIANO WITH THAT STATEMENT. GUY, BY THIS SINGULAR STATEMENT THAT MAN IS NOT FIT TO BE A LEADER. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. HOW CAN A GROWN UP MAN NOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN INDIGENES AND DWELLERS? WAS IT AN IGBO MAN WHO CLEANED UP LAGOS DURING FASHOLA'S DAYS? IS IT AN IGBO MAN DOING IT NOW WITH AMBODE? True it is that Igbos buy lands in Lagos and build on remote and good areas but that's not only what develops a place. Ojukwu visited during the dedication of ASPAMDA (TRADE FAIR) and warned them to do so in their status too,l but my fellow Igbos in that market saw him as a TRIBALISTIC human now they are crying they developed Lagos. Mehn, it's crazy. I'm IGBO and I have no hand in the development of LAGOS!!! If you like go to another man's land and keep fighting,OYO ooooooo 9 Likes |

Obi1kenobi:Anambraians are the most successful Igbo people both in business and other human endeavours but let me tell you why the boast, majority are successful traders who have made more money more than the professors and even the educated ones, tell why such person won't boast? Most of Anambraians made their money in their home state before travelling to other parts of the world, so they think the world start in Anambra and end in Anambra. But there still some other successful Igbo business men and women from other sections of Igboland. 1 Like |

Stingman: Gwari people decided to completely cede control of their own land to settlers. Socio-politically, economically, culturally, they wield little influence in the affairs of Abuja. Ordinary FCT minister, they get sidelined by Hausa-Fulanis. Lagos has an undisputed Yoruba character. Even places heavily populated by Igbos are still politically dominated by Yorubas. You can bleat all you want about how Lagos was the former capital, and there's a point to that, but the fact is Yorubas have retained custodianship of the state 9 Likes |

Obi1kenobi: Very stupid write up. As you said, Fulani herdsmen slaughter people all over the country, they dont attract that level of hatred Boko Haram and islamic fundamentalists up North slaughter people, they dont attract that level of hatred Niger Delta militants go on the rampage destroying Oil installation, they dont attract hatred. The Igbo man opens his mouth and talks, they this is the worst form of hatred. Something is wrong with Nigerians. What is wrong with Igbos saying that Lagos is no mans land? If Yorubas like, they can Enugu is no mans land, most Igbos would not care. Igbos are not in Nigeria to please Yorubas or Hausas and if the other ethnic groups dont like it, they should come together and agree to grant Igbos their separate country. Why would anyone want to be with someone they dont like? But to be hating on Igbos with one side of the mouth while insisting on one united Nigeria is ridiculous. Nigerians should learn to take Igbos are they are or grant them their own country. Put up, or shut up. 18 Likes 2 Shares |

I have said it before, and I will say it again- Yoruba are the owners of Lagos. Having said that, at no point did Governor Obiano say Igbos own Lagos. Yes, Igbos pay a lot of taxis in Lagos, and if Obiano wants to attract some of those billions back to Anambra, then good luck to him, but I know Ambode is very though, so it will not be easy for Obiano to divert investment from Lagos. God bless Igbos, Yorubas and indeed, All Nigerians. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

achi4u: Thing is in most places, the most affluent people tend to be politicians, corporate executives, industrialists etc who tend to be refined. Anambrarians, while we have many in this professional class to rival almost anyone, also have a disproportionate number of affluent people who are traders. A great many of them lack a certain refinement and display their wealth and success in vulgar ways. These are the boastful class. Your average Imo, Enugu or Ebonyi indigene are not really like that. The state that is most similar in that character bu ndi Abia - also because of the huge class of traders. 3 Likes |

gidgiddy: Who said Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram fundamentalists are not hated? Those whose lives they destroy certainly hate them. The difference is in reach. Igbos seem to go out of their way simply due to their loud mouths to attract resentment from every group. Even Niger Delta people dislike us. Even Igboid groups like Ikwerres dislike us too. That should give you pause to consider why this is so. Yet, many IPOB clowns were dreaming of carrying along the Niger Delta in their secessionist plans: people that dislike you.
Nigerians can't grant Igbos anything. The day Igbos have a true consensus about secession, the Nigerian state will take them seriously. Rallying tens of thousands of jobless miscreants in IPOB rallies is not a secession strategy. It's just noise making. 13 Likes |

Obi1kenobi:Bros, I DO NOT AGREE THAT ANAMBRARIANS ARE BOASTFUL. I have been quite around a lot of tribes very well apart from the HAUSAS and I tell you this is far from the truth. Can we start by checking celebrities and wealthy politicians in Nigeria that flaunt their wealth? Let me name a few living Anambrarians for you: Peter Obi Alex Ekwueme (A former VP but as quiet as cold) Arthur Eze Andy Uba Flavour Even Ojukwu whom had to boast he will defeat Nigeria did after the Aburi saga. Guy, an average Anambrarian busy with his business has no time for the pride meetings. Even here on Nairaland, you can notice the population that comment more, definitely not Anambrarians. The challenge with Anambra used to be blood-money but now it is drugs. Th3e major proponents of this "Lagos is no man's land" are those "my mama say I be Ibo" crew, it's only Lagos the6 know 4 Likes |

igbodefender: I'm not insulting Anambrarians or anything. Anambra is the historical and cultural heartland of ala Igbo. Anambra has produced a lot of accomplished sons in all fields of endeavour. Probably only Ogun surpass us in this. It's still the truth though that Anambrarians can be very arrogant in a way many find repellent. Obiano's statement the other typifies this classic arrogance. It's also no surprise or coincidence that the other Igbo governor to have made similarly provocative statements in an Abian. Anambra and Abia. Onitsha and Aba. They represent tthe ultimate stereotypes of Ndigbo. 7 Likes |
